  1. Before you buy these lanterns have you ever considered what happens to the remains of these lanterns when the fire goes out?

Take a look in land and you'll find them hanging from the trees all over the place and no doubt the ocean floor is covered with these rusting frames and un-spent fuel.

The island and sea has plently of litter and rubbish all over the place already please don't add to the problem just for the sake of looking at a pretty light in the sky for five minutes.

And imagine the boost in global warming because of the heat the lanterns produce! We should really tell the Thais to abolish this silly tradition to celebrate their new year! We gave them Christmas, Halloween and Valentine, producing so much garbage that we cannot tolerate a bit of wire and petroleum per person. :o

No body is asking any Thai's to give up any traditions. :D (If you bothered to look at the original posting you will see that new year has already passed and the lighting of 30 lanterns is simply for a private party.) Its the dumb ass people who light those lanterns every night of the year on Samui that I object to and I am simply asking the original correspondent to consider what happens to 30 lanterns after they have been released. :D

  3. None of my text messages are being delivered to my G/f on Samui, it started on Sunday and as of today Tues there still no getting through. This happened before about 6 months ago and lasted about 3 days, then they all get delivered in one go. She uses 1-2 Call. Does any one know the cause of this,is it a fault in Samui or is it my end (Vodafone UK). Thanks

I think its your end my messages are all getting through to 1-2-call in Samui no problems. i'm on o2

  4. :D:D since the bars have to close 2am, where is it possible to watch the semi`s ???

    I`ll get a heartattack if I can`t find a place......

:o:D I know its not good to repeat , but I need help...............where can I watch championsleague semifinals live ??? if nowhere, where is a good place to watch them repeat, the next day.........??

Well, Im near Ban Rak so , Lamai is a little to fare.......but it sounds good..... last year I did watch the semi`s in a "closed" bar.....but I can understand, that the Police are getting more strictly about the bloody 2am rule...........any ideas around Ban Rak or Cheweng ??

In chawenge the islander is a good place to watch repeats the next day. The PFC bar on soi reggae pub will probably show them live I think. Give Nick (the owner) a ring there number is in all the tourist mags.

  5. The size of the current airport is not the problem it is perfectly adequate.

The extortionate prices Bangkok Airways are able to charge, simply because they have a monopoly, are the problem. Nowhere in the modern world are monopolies allowed to exist because they are unfair and unjust.

The only answer to a monopoly is competition. Unfortunately that means another airport on Samui, as the nearest competition in surratthani is just not a practical option.

I personally fly the route around 30 times per year. I could not care less about the quaint gardens or the boutique airport, if thats what the holiday makers want let them pay for it. I just want to get to Samui for a reasonable fair price and I suspect the many Thai's who are simply priced out of flying to Samui and my fellow regular travellers feel exactly the same.

Bring on the new airport the sooner the better.

  6. Now the businessmen and resort/hotelowners are desperate to lure Department og Aviation to build a 2. airport on Samui. But these people have made Samui overestablished so in the peak and high season there have been a occopied rate of only 70-80% and they are afraid to loose money.

Also remember that there is a limit of 36 arrival and departur for airplanes according to the Enviromental Department. I belive there also are strickt rules from the international Aviaton Autorities that there must be 25 kilometers between 2 airports.. And there is not enought space on Samui to fulfill these rules.

Hey Mr Gatorade have you nothing to say about Blackwolf's comment about the limit of 36 flights per day. I seem to remember you jumping down my throat and telling me I was wrong, some time ago when I suggested there was a limit on the number of movements on Samui I had thought it was around 34 - but you had read the AIP so I was obviously wrong!

  7. Now I know where my 8000 baht return fare I pay 10 times a year is going. What an over indulgent waste of money it is. All so the tourists will ooh and aah when they arrive and say what a lovely quaint airport this is.

And who the hel_l planned the new airport, you have to check in in one building then get in one of the buses which transports you about 100 meters to another departure building. Why they could not have just built a path from one to the other I don't know.

All we need from an airport is somewhere to land, get off and somewhere to get and take off then maybe the Bangkok airways extortion racket would not be necessary and we could be paying reasonable fares like in the rest of Thailand.

Now we have such a large airport there must be plenty of capacity for more flights from other airlines and therefore competition but I'm sure the monopoly and extortion will continue.

I love Samui and at the moment it is not convienient to move for a couple of yeas but the first chance I get I'm off to Phuket. I'm sick of paying these ridiculous prices.

    Rant over.

  8. If all the disgusting europeans took there rubbish back to the Hotels with them the beach would not need cleaning by the Thai's. It makes my blood boil when I walk up the beach and watch the farrangs stubbing out their ciggarettes in the sand, what do they think happens to their stubs. Its not just the beach going down hill, the drainage canal behind my apartment is dumping black untreated effluent into the sea all day and night I dread to think what is in it. I have been making monthly visits to Samui for the last 5 years and the beach is definately going down hill. I just wish the vile tourists that use it would treat it with more respect or stay in Benidorme where they belong.

  9. Yes Mr Gatorade I am well aware what the definition of a movement is, but as we are on a Samui forum whoses members are mostly not from the aviation world, I used the word "flights". How are your maths? 34 flights equals 68 movements (thats in and out), 56 movements means 29 flights.

I do not require explanation of separation minima and landing systems by a 2-bit puddle jumper like you. I am an Air Traffic Controller.

Obviously the limitation to which I was refering was not including tin pot sea planes and training flights or as you say Bangkok Airways would not allow them. Trouble is, not having the superior intelligence and memory retention of a high and mighty pilot like yourself, I cannot remember which publication I read this limitation in.

Next time you take your cursory glance at the schedule see if there are regularly more than 34 flights in one day (thats 68 movements in and out!). I have never seen more.

As far as the Thailand AIP is concerned are you telling me you have read ALL of it. The restriction could be a stupid government or Taskin rule and not appear in the AIP.

However I am not a pilot and therefore I am sometimes wrong are you?

  10. I dont know where you get this 20 miles restriction between airports from but it is nonsense there are many airports in the world much nearer than 20 miles. I cant speak for FAA but it is not an ICAO or CAA rule. Two airport together does not present too many problems for Air Traffic Control.

I could be wrong but I believe there is a rule withing Thailand that small airports are only allowed 34 flights per day. While the runway capacity is extremely underutilised at Samui, Bangkok Airways use up the 34 flight limit every day. Allowing them to charge comparitably very high prices for their flight and creating the need for another airport.

If the demand is there it will have to be met whether we like it or not, they call it progress
