  1. The girls in those malls have to SELL SELL SELL just to make a meagre living and avoid being sacked. And then they have to cope with this guy hanging around for hours wasting their time not buying anything and probably frightening away the sane customers. He won't even buy them a coffee for having to bear his company.

    How they must hate him...

  2. Your a bit older than me. Would have started drinking in the North Star at 13 in 1974. Knights was on Castilian Street across from the YWCA. The hottest night was Thursday which was the night the nurses got paid. Everyone paid weekly in cash in brown envelopes. Memories...

  3. 'has anybody ever met an ex----"kingsthorpe boot boy" just wondered'

As it happens I an an ex thrup boot boy. Drinking in the North Star from age 13. Was a bouncer for Peter Cohen at Knights Club at 16 (always cash in hand and never mind the paperwork with Peter).

And I still managed to get in to Brasenose and get a degree and have a proper career.

When sent to Lagos for work I was asked if I was scared. Not f%%king likely after a Saturday night in Tarn...

  4. Over priced. Over hyped. And owned by some seriously unpleasant people. And Larry The Bag Man is not a manager there he is a sort of gofer and he doesn't have a work permit. Go almost anywhere else.

  5. Horrible thing to say but for us this is good. Heading back towards the prices of the 1990's for certain activities such as book lending.

The Thai economy has stalled. Inward investment is at an all time low and even if they sort everything out tomorrow it will be decades before confidence returns.

It is however as always the poorest who get kicked hardest in the shorts.

Lean times ahead for the locals but for those of us with foreign currency savings...

  6. If you move back from the beach down Soi 3 Jomtien you will find a huge number of Thais squatting in the half built buildings down there. This is real red shirt territory and they are currently more pissed off with farangs than usual for no better reason that the usual everythings gone wrong so the farangs must be at fault somehow mentality.

But don't go down there in daylight without a Thai escort and definitely don't go down there after dark.

  7. There are some sophisticated scams out there but this is not one of them.

Sorry to be judgemental but anyone who falls for this type of scam does not deserve to have money.

  8. Eric,

Residence Garden is in South Pattaya. Do you mean Jomtien Boathouse Soi 9 Jomtien by chance? This is Ib Ottersons other hotel.

Anyway Jomtien Boathouse is an excellent choice. By memory 1,300 round the front with balcony. Hotel is right on road/beach. Balcony nice to sit out on if noisy but has two sets of double glazing so no noise in room after you shut the doors. 1,100 round the back no balcony very quiet.

Not basic actually quite nice. Caters to families/groups,couples mainly and is not a mongers joint if thats your worry.

Rates drop in April not sure when. You will get a better deal as a walk in if Ib is there and if you can take the risk with a child.

I really am off to Goa now...

  9. Tell me Aussiechock why is nobody allowed to have an opinion but you?

If as you say you have no financial connection with the establishments and you are merely a butterfly looking to spread some good as you pass through this world surely you could accommodate the fact that others have a different opinion to yours?

By the way most bars that are not on Walking Street have cheaper beer prices that bars on Walking Street or had you just not noticed that?

  10. Jamesons. Poor quality food at prices that would be no more than OK if the food was any good. Plus the beer prices are extortionate. Location is back end of a dingy Soi. No real reason to go there except if a rugby international is on.

I had heard it was in trouble and I think this thread confirms it...

  11. Not to derail the thread but you have to admit that the freezing of pensions which have been bought and paid for over a lifetimes working if you move to county X but not if you move to country Y is just F**%ing outrageous.

Know a lot of teachers in UK who are watching this case very closely.

  12. Just how sick are we talking here and what are the symptoms and just why has anyone disclosed the situations to the airlines?

Once a plane takes off it flies to its destination UNLESS a sick person is diagnosed by a doctor passenger should there be one on board (as there are no doctor flight attendants) as likely to die in flight. If you actually die they stick you in the cargo hold. Diversions cost big money and are only authorised if you are likely to die because they did not stop when they had medical advice that you might die if the flight continued and therefore there is a potential legal liability.

If the guy can be dosed up so that he can walk and get on a plane then book him business class on Thai (less questions asked) and get him on a direct flight out of Bangkok for London. Once out of Thai airspace he's golden. One hour out of Heathrow he can inform the crew and an ambulance will meet him on the tarmac.

  13. Whatever you do do not use Dental Café just up from Château Dale. Went in for a clean and polish kept waiting two hours and then was seen by a tiny Thai women who's treatment of me resembled Dr Mengele. Was spitting gum for two weeks after.

  14. I get confused is Northshore the one where they left the steel structure exposed for some 10 years after the last property crash?

If so I wouldn't be buying there for the long term. Quote from structural engineer I know 'even in Africa they would have torn it down and started again'.

  15. The laugh is that most of the time the goods are identical.

Once upon a time quality goods lets use Prada handbags as an example were hand made in Prada's factory in Italy.

They were made by time severed artisans and they cost say $1,000 to make but that was OK as they sold for $2,000+.

Then about 10 years ago some bright spark decided they could be made at similar quality in China for $100. Accordingly the Italian factories were shut down and the the next generation of artisans not trained.

Meanwhile the Chinese set up two factories the one you see that sells products to you and the one you don't which sells on to the fake markets.

The companies concerned know this is happening but its all too late. They have burned their bridges with their own production facilities and ANY criticism of the Chinese is dealt with harshly. Basically the Chinese have got them by the short and curlies.

I was at the big anti-counterfeiting conference in Hong Kong last year. All the big names were there and they were all towing the party line that buying fakes funds the drug trade (nonsense) and that the fakers are violent criminal gangs (nonsense they know who they are). One journalist piped up and asked a question about Chinese fakes being made by their own suppliers and there was a big embarrassed silence until he was thrown out.

    Love the fakes...

  16. I get on very well with ladyboys but then I make a real effort to do so.

I do not have 'relations' with them as its not my thing but I am polite respectful and enjoy the occasional laugh and beer with them.

As such I am known around Walking Street as someone who is on their side as it were. And believe me they do get hassle from drunk tourists particularly Russians.

If you cross the ladyboy mafia they can get very violent very quickly and they are tough. We all know I assume Emma and that he looks just like a women even to being small and petite. Well I've seen him fight and it wasn't pretty for his 6 foot + 150 kilo German opponent.

Definitely a group you want to be your friend.
