I’d trust any vaccine from anywhere, happy to accept any risk, as long as it comes with a certificate that lets me travel again.

Fully agree.. so tired of restrictions: no travelling, lockdown, social distancing... Oh oh..

I would like to come back to normal life as soon as possible... Enjoying the life again ????

However, if we are lucky we can have a vaccine available in Thailand at the beginning of the next year.. So long time to go...

  2. Hi there,

since we are living in a pandemic, sooner or later we need to decide on having a vaccine against COVID-19 or otherwise.

Personally, I concern of any vaccination though this time may affect our travel ability. In the end of the day, I think everybody is going to get the COVID-19 vaccine, otherwise no travelling......

Many corporations in numerous countries are rushing to develop a vaccine for "saving life" but in reality it is a merely and big business for them. Russia is the first country worldwide to officially have a COVID-19 vaccine.

Well, two questions I am interesting in.

Are you willing to be vaccinated against COVID-19?

Which manufacture country of COVID-19 vaccine do you trust most? (E.g. US, China, UK, Russia etc.)

This topic is open for a discussion, please just share your thoughts.

    Thanks.

Good point but I was referring to the drop in registrations which has been evident for several years.

Likely, I miss the part in red.

... likely the demand for lecturers should be higher than usual despite the drop of students enrolled. As a result, less open classes/courses overall though much less foreigner lecturers available during COVID-19.

There have been claims of global surveys indicating that a high number of millenials claim 'they don't need high education' because they are naturally smarter than uni graduates. Whatever.

They are not so wrong ????. Many people are very successful without any university background though having a university degree and its related knowledge might open more doors for their employability.

Btw, you should definitely look at international programs. Salaries at Thai schools are barely survivable.

Thanks for the information and I am totally agree with the above statement.

Also keep in mind that uni registrations (especially new students) have gone way down in Thailand (and in many countries) in the last several years, which has impact on the total number of classes actually started/taught and therefore number of lecturers employed.

Right, though at this unprecedented time, likely the demand for lecturers should be higher than usual. Let's see.

  5. Thanks everybody for all insights.

to find an open position posted is not an easy job in Thailand, likely there are not. As some people suggested contacting directly each uni is the way to go avoiding institutes with no accreditation

I am wondering how the Universities in Thailand operates during the employability process: They require that the candidate has to obtain the work permit beforehand starting working (getting an offer->getting work permit -> then starting working); or the employer asks for a period of teaching assessment -> then starting the application of work permit.

Other questions, how long will take to get the work permit? If I have a visa on arrival and then amnesty, can I apply for the work permit without leaving Thailand?

    Thanks.

Students pay big course fees but ed. outcomes not all that good. Have a good look around many Thai uni admin. departments, they are massively overstaffed and many staff are employed through nepotism. have no knowledge of advanced education approaches or ed. management/administration and not interested.

I have no experience re unis in Cambodia.

I have taught many courses in Vietnam in an Executive MBA program which is currently suspended because of Covid and re-oranization together with the offshore partner uni.

However, I'm aware that the Vietnam Ed. ministry takes a whole different approach compared to Thailand.

There's quite a few unis in Vietnam, some date back to strict communist doctrine, but many have updated themselves and some use Singapore unis as a rough role model (overall Vietnam sees Singapore as a model in many areas including in many levels of education.).

By deliberate policy a number of offshore unis operate (are allowed/encouraged to operate) stand alone and have large flexibility in many ways, from my understanding RMIT is an example.

Purpose? to challenge all VN unis to improve themselves towards global benchmarks. And I've heard comments from senior VN ed. ministerial seniors that it's working and comments that S'pre ed folks are impressed with the changes.

A bit off topic, I enjoyed lecturing the courses in the Exec. MBA program in VN, my class had a maximum of 24 students, the students were all Vietnamese, most around 30 but a few up to about 50 years old. Many were quite successful local business owners, a few senior bureaucrats, mostly attending because the UN and other development funding comes with strings attached re attending western style advanced education.

The students mostly speak perfect English, a few speak quite good English, they work well and respect each other in small teams, they have excellent attendance records, they contribute very well in class discussions, they are focused, polite and respectful but no hesitation to ask questions, they hand in good work and always on time.

Thanks for sharing your experience.. Underlying a good memory..

    - Some foreign lecturers are paid by the course at an hourly rate but no retainer.

But no guaranteed minimum number of courses per month or semester and possibly no courses.

No commitment and likely the most important thing no work permit..

Webster University and Stamford both have small campuses in Bangkok and main campuses in Hua Hin. They are both American affiliates/branches.

Thanks indeed for the useful info.

Having a masters and a Phd, who in his right mind would come to Thailand and lecture for around 30,000baht, that's 800Euros (you probably get this, being un-employed in Europe).

In the neighbouring countries, the salary is at least three or four times higher for the same position but locals and foreigners are treated differently in terms of remuneration.

The reason is I need an option to stay after September. So, I thought to get a work permit. Leaving Thailand at this time is just a big chaos and it will not go away soon. I entered with a visa on arrival, extended, and then amnesty. Less than 50 years old and no married with a Thai woman.

Any suggestion/option to prolong my stay after September? E.g. ED visa, work permit or what.. Thanks.

  8. Thanks scorecard and bbabythai for the very informative and detailed post.

Sadly, emerges that working in University here is not really alluring where you could have a better paid job in international schools than in universities.

This is quite surprising since few months back I was interviewed by several students from a University in Chiang Mai and I asked them about their tuition fees, I do not remember the specific number, but my first thought was: "Study is not cheap here, this should correlated to the salaries of lecturers". From what emerge is not the case.... lower salary meaning lower teaching quality though students pay much more.

Instead, are there International Universities/Colleges own/manage by foreign entities or cooperation between foreigners and Thais (e.g. joint programmes)?

For example in Vietnam and Cambodia, joint programmes are very popular and there are many established International universities such RMIT, American University among many others. Something like that here? I suppose these are meanly in Bangkok.

Cons: The salary is only about 42k. ???? This is at all Thai government universities. You could do much better monetarily, at secondary level private or international schools.

    Thanks everybody for comments.

Yes you right in absolute terms, the salary could be higher at secondary level private or international schools but I think they have an office time schedule (6-8 hours a day for 5-6 days in a week). In Universities, it should be much different ????

If you are ready to live a chip charlie but just enough for everything life, universities or vocational colleges are your best shot.

If you want to work at the bottom of all human beings.. normal government schools are for you as a english teacher.

A normal life... international schools are for you.

My suggestion would be universities. I know from my friends.

Thanks for the suggestion. You right.

I have seen thousands of jobs for English teachers but I did not see any position or website for university jobs. Any idea where academic jobs are posted in Thailand?

In addition, do you know the salary range for Universities in Thailand? Thanks.

  11. Hi There,

I am living in Thailand and I would like to establish my life in Thailand.

Please I would like to receive advise from the community if there is any possibility to find a teaching job preferably in University in Thailand during this time of COVID-19.

I have a PhD in Economics, Bachelor and Master degrees in Marketing and Business Communication. I hold more than 15 years of experience teaching Economics, Marketing as well as Econometrics for undergraduate and postgraduate students within Universities and Colleges (in Europe, UK and South-East Asia).

    Kindly, any advise/tips?

    Thanks indeed.

  12. Thank you very much for all useful information.

I would like to share my story with you as follows:

I signed a 6-month rental contract with an agent (individual person) for an apartment in a condo and regularly paid the rent to the agent's bank account (fortunately keeping all bank receipts).

Recently, I received a message under my door stating that "you have to contact the owner of your property" indicating a telephone number to call. I did so, and the main points of the conversation was that the agent is sick and you should pay the rent to my bank account (the presumed owner). In retrospective, the agent before disappearing asked me to pay the monthly rent one week in advance than the due date and I did so. Then no answer to any call or message. After receiving money he became sick, very strange. I have seen from the beginning that the agent was very hungry of money asking me many times to pay 6 rental months in advance with a discount, which I refused. I though he has some financial problems or something like that..

Talking with the presumed owner, she did not know the length of my contract, when starts and when ends. She did not know if I paid the last rent or not, so she asked me the last bank receipt for the rent payment. She did not know anything. Afterwards, I asked in which hospital the agent is, she did not know; she told me: he is in ICU (no visit allows or checking, but did not know the hospital). The other element suspicious that the presumed owner told me (without asking) I do not live in your city (meaning we cannot meet up).

Now the presumed owner asked me to pay the rent to her bank account. So the bank account and the person name where I should send the money are different from the ones stated in my rental contract. I never met the presumed owner and I do not have any idea who she is. I really concern of the legitimate title of this person. I cannot pay to someone that I do not know.

How I may come out from this situation? What I should do to be sure that I pay my rent to the right person and nobody else can ask me more later? For instance checking the ownership of my rental place, asking ID of the owner, sign a new contract directly with this owner, etc.. Please, any advice are very much welcome.

    Thanks indeed.
