I would advise you to visit Samui before you pull the "that's it, I'm moving to Samui" card based off of a few posts here. Nothing against KhunPer and TropicalEvo, they are both very helpful, well-spoken, and regular posters here, but they are Samui's biggest shill's as well. You basically read all the great things about Samui and almost decided to move based on that alone. Don't get me wrong, Samui is a wonderful place that I someday hope to retire to as well, but seriously consider going there first as they suggested. Taxis and Grab are not cheap on Samui, they are more expensive than Phuket in some cases. Depending on your interest in riding a motorbike or driving on the island, that could be a potential deal breaker alone. Go see what you think about it once the interprovincial restrictions are lifted.

In over 40 years, we only know of 5 Thai people who moved back to Thailand from the U.S..
One of my wife's friends just left back to Thailand. She has been back for all of 3 weeks and realizes she made a mistake already and is trying to come back to the States to work. Didn't think that one through very well, straight up abandoned her job and repatriated via quarantine process. Oops.

I wish there are different kinds of tourists coming. As Thailand will be a very different place when this is over. And I think the change will be for the better. And not only in Thailand.
Definitely agreed. No one liked the mass hordes of Chinese.

Honestly, as openly racist as this claim is from the government, I wouldn't accept a sinovac vaccine anyways.
If I was an expat, I'd prefer to be on some private hospital list waiting to pay for a Pfizer vaccine.

I will say the current state of Thailand has my Thai wife absolutely not wanting to return for the foreseeable future due to the incompetent and self-serving government. My interests in Thailand have also waned significantly since the pandemic got underway for a multitude of reasons. The reality that most of my favorite places around the country no longer look the same way or have the same vibe they did just a couple years ago is the one that hurts the most. The challenge of international travel for casual tourism or even a month long trip back to Thailand has become a massive undertaking. No longer is it a quick ticket booking via Eva Airlines, JAL or ANA but a huge hurdle to navigate all the Visa and ASQ requirements. While we would like to visit her family in Thailand, I don't see the point in sitting around and not being able to enjoy the things we had become accustomed to enjoying in Thailand.
I worry that if Thailand continues with its current vaccination strategy, the damage will be done to the countries travel hotspots and it will likely take years to recover to anything that resembled pre-covid travel experiences in Thailand.

I have heard some have waited 2 years to get a green card after applying for change if status on a K1 visa in salt lake city.
Straight from the USCIS website this morning. 129F to I-485 is a painful transition right now post-covid. Highly recommend CR1.

Really? For what ? Plenty of girls that rather be with another girl for sex or swing both ways and many are intelligent enough to get a good/great job and don't need a man for financial support..
I find it sad (and very telling about the current world we live in) that a woman may only find value in the opposite gender for financial support. Have they all given up the prospects of having a family and a life companion? I see this not only in Thailand, but also in Korea and Japan where the women seem to be getting professional jobs and staying alone instead of getting married. Very concerning for these governments as the population continues to age and becomes top-heavy.

It's looking like they will restrict everything, without a curfew, thus, they can say it's not a lockdown, hence, no welfare payments.
Since such a move will not cost them anything, there will be no hurry to lift these restrictions.
What a crock, this government is doing so much permanent damage to Thailand's functional tourist economy it's unbelievable.

Are you overreacting? I'd say no. The current situation is a mess that is evolving day by day with no end in sight or feasible plan at the moment.
I wouldn't want to go right now at least.

Please let me in, Thailand, I promise to you to spend as much money as the TAT expects from me! Seriously!
This is how the Thai government views us farang. We're all pleading to enter the ivory tower of Thailand, the promised land.

Would a 20 year elite visa be of any use in this situation? I'm really not sure, just thought I'd throw it out there as an option.

I've had enough of this circus. My wife and I are getting a Covid test this Sunday. If negative we will be back in the USA shortly after. Still love Thailand and Thai people. Their Covid response, not so much.
Welcome back. Plenty of vaccines available and things are picking up for domestic travel. Pfizer and JnJ both available with no appointment necessary in our area.

Absurd comment. They are not changing the rules on 'him' or any individual.
Of course it's not targeted, I'm just saying the odds of an individual being grandfathered in to the 7/10 day quarantine program is highly unlikely. If they deem it necessary to change, it will probably apply for anyone from that date forward.

They will probably change the rules on you, but no one knows for sure.

Don't expect Pattaya to be the town you remember though, that's a year or more away.
It is important for people to realize this current reality. Although they are looking to rush back into Thailand as tourists, the current environment is far from what it was a couple years ago. I might recommend visiting and seeing if you still want to 'move' there with the current state of affairs.

I gave up.
I'm a bit of a polyglot and I speak both Thai and Lao fluently, yet I can't tell you how many time I've spoken to someone in a store, and they won't answer me, but speak directly to my wife, like I was invisible.
How could I forget, that one is a classic too. It's better to just let the wife run the show in Thailand.

When I first started coming to Thailand, I went through incredible efforts to learn Thai. Over time, I've realized its a cheap party trick that gets people asking 'why can you speak Thai?' and gets them clamoring amongst themselves about how many Thai girlfriends you've had and how long you've lived in Thailand. Beyond that, very little of value has come out of it and I would not recommend it to anyone.
We will always be regarded as 'Farang'. Furthermore, I have nothing in common with most Thai men to want to assimilate anyways.

It's nervous laughter, as they realized they're still living there and seeing things disappear around them.

I don't think there is a clear differentiation between the two. Mosquitos are everywhere, especially during the rainy season.

I think we'll see a lot more closures with this even bigger 'wave'. Feel bad for the people trying to hold out for just a few months more, just to have it roll back to even worse than last year. Pattaya is going to struggle immensely with this.

Having visited Vietnam and seeing the hard work ethic of the Vietnamese and the unparalleled customer service, the Thais do have reason to worry.

She does have a green card already so she can return, yes. However, her resume is effectively tarnished by job abandonment. It just goes to show you that the grass is not always greener and that rose colored glasses are a powerful motivator, sometimes for the worse.
