  1. Well, very reliable and fast internet connections are indeed widely available in Latvia.

The whole communication network was overhauled and new lines and communication hardware were installed everywhere after separation from USSR, and nowadays it is easily possible to get inexpensive, yet very fast DSL and fiber optics connections in most locations. As an example, 400Mbps fiber optics line costs just 40 USD/month.

  2. I don't think any country would go for it if it's rice for trains! Do the Chinese really need to buy 7+ million tonnes of rice for domestic consumption, I thought they grew enough for their needs?

I think there is one additional point that has been missed in all the rice discussions so far. If all these shady deals that this government makes on selling the existing purchased rice in the few following years come true then it will reduce the volume of new rice that Thai farmers will be able to sell in future. There is only so much demand for the rice in the world.

The last taxi fare increase in BKK was in July 2008.

12% up from the previous fare.

Tell us what part of the fare was increased, the base fare of 35 baht has been in affect since 1998 that I know of.

It used to be that the first two kilometers were covered by 35 baht. In 2008 it was changed to be only one kilometer covered for 35 baht. The fares per kilometer also went up at the same time.

  4. ou are right, sorry.wai2.gif

The ministry added that the government had already earned Bt120 billion from release of rice stocks.

    (spent)Bt661.224 - (Worth)Bt226 + (sold)Bt120 = Bt335.224 Billion. Bt215.224.

Plus finance and loan fees and warehousing/storage and spoilage loss. The Bt260 billion loss is right in the ballpark.

    Nope... (spent)Bt661.224 - (Worth)Bt226 + (sold)Bt120 = Bt335.224 Billion Bt215.224. Bt315.224

And some wonder that the government cannot arrive at the right figure.. biggrin.png

  5. Why don't they increase the fare annually by the rate of inflation + 2%? If the inflation rate is 4% per year then each year they're not given a raise they are in effect getting a pay cut. Take into account the compound effect of inflation, over five years that's a massive pay cut.

I seem to remember that some years ago some government official gave an justification why the fares have been increased very little over the past years which was that most taxis have switched to LPG and NGV instead of gasoline and therefore their gas costs per km have reduced significantly already. In my opinion it kind of makes sense, however some increase seems to be justified.

I believe that the best would be to increase the fare per minute when the taxis have to stand in traffic. This is the main reason why they often refuse to take the passengers in expectation of traffic. They are usually quite happy to go long distances with little traffic expected, so the current baht/km fare is not a problem.

  6. Maybe these developers believed the nonsense about the news of increased tourism by the millions and expected sales to increase as a result. Their lies are catching up with them.

I am not sure, if it has anything to do with the expectations on tourism. I know a few Thais who have bought condos as their second properties on loans simply because it is considered to be 'a good investment' based on the assumption that property prices always go up. At the same time many of the new condo buildings which are built in last few years are staying 70-80% empty, even supposedly all the units are sold. There are more and more new condo buildings being built and I just cannot see that this could continue forever.

By the way, I have seen some news last year that the government was considering implementing a property tax of 0.1% on residential units. I suppose that if they would reconsider and make it 0.5% or 1% like in many other countries then the bubble would burst much faster, but I doubt it will happen since most decision-making government officials probably have many such properties themselves.

  7. Wasn't there a big high rise hotel built on the Chao Phraya river that started tilting or am I dreaming again?

Remember that back in about 2001 or 2002.......... not sure if it was a Hotel, also cannot remember if it was tilting or just thought to be unsafe.

Anyone remember ? update what happened ?

It is called Millenium Hilton now. If I remember correctly, it was built during the crisis (1997?), declared unsafe, then taken over by Hilton and opened in 2005 after some renovation.

  8. Indeed, the announced and published numbers get more confusing by day. From various recently published articles one could gather that in the first year the government has purchased 7 or 9 million tons of rice and has spent THB 376-400 billion on the entire operation, and are planning to approve THB 320 billion for another 8 or 9 or 11 million tons in the coming season. It also looks that on the entire operation the government is actually spending about three times more than the announced price of 15,000 THB per ton.

Interesting. Didn't the Minstry of Commerce just tell us they wanted to borrow a triffling THB 320 billion more for the rice mountain? Didn't they also say to have 'earned' THB 180 billion in G2G deals (details coming real soon now)?

Further more the article tells about the way a small loss of THB 100 or so billion over 2011-2012 will be repaid in a few years. Any idea already how much will be needed to repay over the 2012-2013 period? Any figures on the level of the rice mountain and whether we can already try to register it with the GBR?

  9. I have seen some bicycle paths in Banglumpoo area and there is even a free bicycle rental station nearby. However, the whole stretch of this marked bicycle path is always taken by the cars parked there and the police around there is just ignoring this. Hence, I see only very few people ever biking there.

I'd like to know where they are hiding them. They must be including the marked sidewalks/footpaths that are scattered around (and a lot of poorly-marked ones, and parks, etc). I've seen only one place where the street had a marked bicycle path, but Bangkok is immense.

  10. "...the organisation still runs a massive loss every year. Therefore, the BMTA has no excuse to offer poor service to passengers."

I find the reasoning somewhat strange. The public buses on most routes are quite crowded, so I would assume that the poor conditions of the buses and perhaps also the lack of quality bus drivers should be then attributed to insufficient financing and insufficient government subsidies since the bus ticket prices themselves are established by the government.

  11. Ehh... I should have read this thread earlier - just recently signed up for one year membership with payment in advance, and the next day was approached with a proposal to upgrade to lifetime VIP membership with an option to always bring a friend or family member with me for free for just 10,000 Bt . Sounds like they are getting desperate. I hope they will last for at least one year... :-)

  12. I seem to have some foggy memories that when they just started they promised promotional prices for a year or so, with planned price increases in the next years. If these memories are true then they are just following the initial plan. Or was it for BTS?

    ...

Also, before you make accusations of thievery, does the MRTA operate at a surplus or a deficit? How much of the cost of the system is covered by fares as opposed to subsidies?

  14. Why do you think that it is any different here? As job opportunities go, it might be more difficult to get a job here than in China. By the way, there is also a forum of russians in Thailand at ivan-susanin.com, but I do not think that they will be able to suggest any better. There are plenty of foreigners around here looking for jobs, but very few actually find them. The most common positions offered are indeed for teachers. There are many jobs prohibited to foreigners, as government is saving those positions for thais, and accounting is among those.

....lots of restrictions and stupid regulations evereywhere. Still, foreigners here are considered like a "monkey at the zoo"... Oh,man I can speak about it for hours!!!
