  1. The main thing that struck me was the absence of litter, plastic bags and Styrofoam.

I would say 'have a better look'. I travelled by boat from Bagan to Mandalay and noticed that everywhere lots of garbage form villages (including plastics etc) was just dumped into the river (Irrawaddy). Also at other places it starts looking like Thailand. It's a huge problem already.

  2. Ok here it is in a nut shell 7-11 are franchised out by a single Thai family they charge 100,000 baht to open one you find location you want to open they turn around and open one few doors away screwing you in return. 7-11 is US based enterprise In the states it is against corporate policy to open another store close to 7-11 that is near by. In Thailand it is the norm. Maybe an AM PM mini mart would be better.

This picture taken at Wongamart (Pattaya) almost confirms what you are stating. However here are with a 50 meter radius a 7/11, a Family Mart and a Tesco.

  3. Recently an unknown person had used my Bangkok Bank (Visa) credit card details for purchases in Europe (in Euro’s).

I was called by a representative from Bangkok Bank explaining me what happened and the only thing I has to do was to state that I disputed these expenses. I got all the money back in Baht so that in the end it did not cost me anything.

Very good proactive action taken by Bangkok Bank.

  4. I pay my eletricity- and telephone bills automatically. Not difficult to set up. I went the offices of these companies. They supplied me with a form which needed to be filled in. After this I had to go to the bank for some admin things (not sure what they did, but rubber stamping was one of the things). Then handed the form back to the companies. Works fine for me already for 6 years. Setting this up is not difficult, maybe just somewhat different from what you were used to in your home country.

  5. I heard through the grapevine the following. Bars on Soi 18 were closed as their lease term had expired and the owner increased rents to an extraordinary level. So the bars moved out.

Bars like the Drum and the Monkey (but also the neighbouring restaurant ‘Haus Munchen’) had (as per order of city hall) to remove the front area. This was a more or less illegal structure built as an extension to the existing building. City Hall seems to be keen on building codes. The D & M is still open.

I agree there is a lot of construction work going on on Naklua Road (specifically from the roundabout to corner Soi 18).

  6. Glad to be of assistance - I have spent a good part of my life in this area and am happy to encourage anyone to visit.

Myeik is a delight if you are after something off the usual tourist track.

Tonnes of history - great old buildings, a Japanese cemetery with some very interesting history circa WWII, a beautiful pagoda situated on a hill overlooking the main Myeik harbour, and a great insight into daily life in a bustling coastal fishing & trading port where foreigners are seldom seen.

There is a yachtie who has put together an informative 2 page guide for Kawthoung and Myeik - http://www.seal-superyachts.com/superyacht-agent-myanmar/guide/

It is geared towards yachts and superyachts visiting Myanmar, but the info will be useful for anyone heading to the area.

As for the Delta and Ngwe Saung - I put together a couple of trip reports late last year for this area, and these can be seen here:

    Happy travels

    SVB

Thank you SVB. Again great ideas for one of the next trips !

  7. In the past years I have been quite some times to Myanmar. Not only to the touristic areas but also to the outskirts of the country. Although being a single traveller safety has never been a problem. I have never been hassled for anything (except for Bagan). Once certain regions are considered unsafe you cannot go there anymore as authorities will not allow you to do so.
