  1. I am looking for a Maths tutor to help my son improve his IB grade during the summer vacation. He's in grade 11, and going into grade 12 next semester. He is following the IB Diploma syllabus, and doing Maths at Standard level. A few hours each week, during the month of July, would help him alot. Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions. PS. We live in the Sansai / Mae Jo area.

  2. I want to take my dog for a good walk tomorrow. Several parks that we tried in the past did not encourage people to bring their dogs in..? I just wondered if anyone can recommend somewhere where we can let her off the lead for a good run..? Thanks..

  3. Exactly the same thing happened to me. I was trying to cross to enter a business in the other side of a two lane road. Traffic was backed up to some lights, so quite unusually a car backed up so I could cross over. As I slowly moved forward a motorbike came racing up on the inside hard shoulder and slammed straight into the front of my car (which is fitted with bull bars). The male rider was uninjured, but his female pillion had a leg injury. The bike was bent too, but no damage to my car. The police arrived, and an ambulance, and we all made statements and produced our documents. The bike was uninsured, and tax out of date, and they were not wearing helmets. All my papers were good, but I didn't have comprehensive insurance. In the end, I was blamed and made to pay for the bike damage, her hospital bills and her loss of income..! We later found out that she wasn't working where she said she was, and we stopped all further payments. The police thought it was funny that I objected to the way they handled the case. I was later stopped and threatened with jail, if I didn't pay a substantial bribe. My opinion of the Thai Police was changed forever after..

I am surprised lesson you did not seem to learn was to have insurance.

And you paid medical bills which were not only free but covered by compulsory insurance

I think the lesson for everyone is this. Always have first class insurance. No matter how much it cost, as long as it's reasonable. So you don't have to worry about what happen in an accident.

I have been in Thailand for well over 20 years, and have hardly ever paid for 1st class insurance. Only once, on a car that we bought with a bank loan. The only accident I have had, the one mentioned above, cost me about the same as 1 years first class insurance premium, on just one of my cars. That makes it quite economic NOT to have first class insurance, but to drive very carefully, and accept the risk..? The girls medical bills were small, and just for A&E services. And we paid the hospital directly..

I'm curious. What happened after that?

  6. Thank you, Nowretired. I thought I'd start by getting our UK marriage translated into Thai, so it can be registered in Thailand. Not so fast..! Officially, it has to be authenticated at the Royal Thai Embassy, in the country where the marriage took place. But we were advised at City Hall, that it should be acceptable, if an affidavit is signed at the British Embassy, in Bangkok..? But I am not going to make a special trip down there, on the off-chance it is acceptable..? So more research is required, especially as there is no pressing urgency. And as you say, the retirement is relatively straightforward to extend each year. Thanks again.

  7. What advantages are there for an extension based on marriage, as opposed to one for being over 50 (retirement)..? I currently have the latter, but I believe for the former you require only half the funds (400k) in the bank, and you are also allowed to work, or run a business..? I just want to get an idea of the pro's and con's, before deciding on one or the other. Thanks.

  8. I am a cyclist, and I know the road where the accident happened. Most cyclists have some sort of lights, often flashing, or at least someone in each group has lights. But I don't cycle in the dark, because it's quite dangerous enough in the daylight..! My condolences to the families of those killed, and injured. The driver of the car must be punished, but unfortunately, it will not stop it happening again..? The roads get busier, and more dangerous, every year, and everyone is in too much of a hurry..
