Expats hailed! Foreigners living in Thailand called "heroes" for leading the way in Thai tourism recovery

Channel 3 recognised the role of foreigners living in Thailand for helping lead the way in the recovery of Thai tourism.

Along with Thai domestic tourists they recognised expats as "heroes" in their print headline on a story about a year since Covid struck.

They also quoted TAT governor Yutthasak Suphasorn as recognising the role played by both groups of people in what he called the "restart" of tourism after the lowest income in years was experienced in 2020.

The media reported that tourism worldwide - 10% of the world economy - had been devastated since the world first learned of the coronavirus, that they said started on December 8th 2019.

A 52 trillion baht worldwide industry had been devastated, they said.

But in an upbeat assessment of the future they said that Thailand in particular and Asia in general would recover faster than elsewhere in the world.

They said that Thailand was still a "magnet" for tourism and that Thai investment in building new attractions would bring a new group of tourists.

They said that Thailand is recognized as one of the places in the world where the Covid-19 situation has been best handled.

And only two to three years ago, expats were the scourge of Thailand and were getting booted out  for the smallest offences. Once tourism gets back to normal, the Thai government will go after the Farangs again. On a 2nd tangent it is easier to oppress people when there is no foreign  governments watching you because they have expats living there. Hindsight is 20/20, there must have been something the Thai government was preparing for, what that is you can speculate as I will not nor any one should.

No narcotics in Thailand's ‘biggest ever drug haul’ – only cleaning agent

    By The Nation

Justice Minister Somsak Thepsutin has admitted that the chemical seized in what was initially billed as the biggest drugs haul in Thailand’s history is not ketamine, but a harmless cleaning agent.

Somsak explained on Tuesday that when the first test was carried out on 11.5 tonnes of the white powder, it turned the reagent purple – a match for ketamine. But after testing again, the substance was found to be trisodium phosphate, a cleaning agent and food additive which also turns the testing reagent purple.

The mistake was caused by an error in the scientific process, he added.

The seizure made worldwide headlines on November 12 when officials including Somsak announced they had made the largest drugs bust in Thai history. The chemical was found inside 475 sacks piled in a warehouse in Chachoengsao and was said to be worth Bt28.7 billion.

The raid on the warehouse in the eastern province followed a tip-off from officials in Taiwan, who told the Narcotics Control Board they had seized 300 kilos of ketamine, but more was on its way to Thailand. The Thai shipment was seized and tested, with the results checked by scientists from the Justice Ministry and the Forensic Department before the “haul” was announced to the press.

However, subsequent tests on 59 of the sacks showed no ketamine was present. The Justice Ministry said the remaining 406 sacks will now be examined by the NBC, Forensic Science police, and Department of Medical Sciences, with test results due this week.

On Monday, lawyer and transparency activist Atchariya Ruengrattanapong accused Somsak of negligence over the 11.5-tonne seizure and asked the anti-corruption agency to look into the case.

Somsak insisted that he had not bullied anyone, adding that he had set up a working group to investigate what had gone wrong.

Thai court due to give PM conflict of interest ruling

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's constitutional court is due to rule on Wednesday whether there was a conflict of interest in Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha staying in an army residence after retiring, in a case brought by opposition politicians.

A ruling against Prayuth could ultimately force him to relinquish power, although the court has consistently given rulings in his favour since he overthrew an elected government in 2014.

The court's decision comes with tension high after months of protests to demand his removal - a call he has rejected.

Prayuth said this week that he would respect the constitutional court's ruling.

"Guilty means guilty, not guilty means not guilty. It's like any other cases. I'll respect the verdict," he said.

Opposition parliamentarians filed a petition that it constituted a conflict of interest for Prayuth to have remained in military housing after his retirement from the army in 2014. Prayuth has said he needs to stay there for security reasons.

Protesters and other critics accuse Prayuth of engineering elections last year to keep hold of power. He says the vote was fair.

A protest movement that began in July to seek Prayuth's removal and to call for a new constitution.

Another protest is planned for Wednesday. Initially it had been due to take place at the Constitutional Court, but the venue was moved to a less sensitive location.

A court ruling is expected after 3 p.m. (0800 GMT).

Brown these days? I remember little white envelopes for "Tea Money" which was large enough to buy the whole tea farm, that is why I pulled out of Thailand until now.

And for sustainability just don't turn your lights or air-con on.

???? sustainability is not an issue for myself, that is my business and I always live off the grid here in the US. I am bringing our technologies to Thailand hopefully next year, I am just sourcing out plastic trash in Thailand which is the last piece of the puzzle.

It is a nice idea, but renting in Thailand is the way to go.   When things go bad, just move.   Unless you really love life on the water, a boat does not make sense as it will not really save you any money.     Many in the US have convert buses into mobile homes.   Decommissioned buses are cheap, and getting them worked on in Thailand should not be expensive.

Thanks, The other option was to build a 5th wheel. I planned on renting for the first year or two while I build something mobile. I will be splitting my time between Thailand and Cambodia for work, but I need to base myself in Thailand for better medical.

I’ve thought about this from time to time.  The only thing I’ve seen have been resorts along rivers etc.  I assume it would be pretty tough as a foreigner to do it as you would need some sort of land to anchor it to and what would be the terms for leasing such land.  I haven’t seen any moorage type communities such as those that you would see in Seattle or Portland where it would be a “condominium” type arrangement.

This place looks pretty cool however...

Yes, exactly. But I will build in Thailand myself. I have patents for waste destruction and solar energies, I just need a place to dock it . I am working on my business working something out but I do plan on retiring and when I do that I will have to sell the land within 12 months if I close the business.

Yes you can. The problem though is that there is no infrastructure for houseboats. Your only options would be to either put a houseboat in a marina, where a berth alone for a decent size houseboat would cost the same as renting a much lmore spacious house. Or to buy a real boat large enough to live on, and put it for anchor somewhere, with all the associated risks of weather or theft, and the circa 10% in annual maintenance cost.

    Thank you,

I am in the sustainability business, I can build a houseboat to be totally of the grid. but yes I would have to have a place to dock it.  With a floating house it is much less complicated but there still are maintenance costs as if any house. I plan on getting a PR within 5 years with the help of the Thai Board of Investments.
