  1. I found one thing on CM108, but it's all in Thai. Basically, it says that the CM airport scene is chaotic and that many flights have been cancelled. There are also some pix of the terrible air and some PM10 ratings from earlier today. No news on what's to happen next/ outlook for future incoming flights.

  2. Have seen a few people post on Facebook about flights cancelled due to Chiang Mai air quality. A real bummer. I live near the airport and have only heard about 3 flights in the last 3 hours take off, and none landing. Unusually slow for a Friday. Does anybody have any concrete info on this ?

  3. There's usually a big brief storm out of nowhere that comes in March, sometimes even bringing hail with it. March is young yet, and so is the dry season. It's no record. Let's see how it plays out. Some of the weather sites have some 10-20% chance of showers listed for the next two weeks, and you can feel the humidity building in the air. Time will tell.

  4. I don't know your budget or their tastes, but I'll take it you mean that the muay Thai display on LK is overpriced, but not expensive. It's a mixed bag, but it is undeniably a slice of Thai life. In the past they just came around and asked for donations into a bucket or box - I seem to recall a mandatory price being put on it recently, but I could be completely imagining it.

For dinner or lunch, why not go to The Marketplace right there on the river? It's easy walking distance or convenient tuk-tuk distance from Loi Kroh. Plenty of great dining and seafood places in Anusarn Market as well. You can also sit and watch the colorful folks walking through as you eat.

  5. I poked around in some Thai forums and saw that even Thai people were quite puzzled by the name and its meaning n pronunciation. Then someone tracked down the holding co's info on the mall and posted the info that - get this - it is coming from a Greek word meaning "abundance" or something like that. However, all my attempts using any recollections of greek science letters to spell mei-ya in Greek fell flat. Finally I found it - the most common definition is that of "midwife." 5555 Hilarious ! Thai people choosing emblematic words to represent their mall makes as much sense as a Westerner getting some unknown Chinese character tattooed on their body expecting it to mean what they think it will mean. I'll come back and post the links later so ya'll will believe me.

The mall is named Midwife !

  6. Do a search in this forum and you'll find an exhaustive exploration of Infinity and all other places that charge Farang extra and the reasons for doing it and/or how dare they ! It goes on and on and on.... nothing new here.

  7. Thanks, everyone.

I inherited the cat already pregnant, though just a kitten under 1 year herself. So point about fixing is well taken - especially in this country.

I'll check KamTieng market, FolkGuit - that's a good idea.

Have already schemed that there might be a general box n lid combo available for modification at CM Plastic in Warorot n will go investigate today. I'd be pretty excited if I can just make one on the cheap n easy.

I get the daily scooping thing - I've had cats before. But given the hot climate n all, I want all the cards in my favor I can get.

  8. Imagine if you will... that you left your home for a month or more and left a Thai to look after the house, and your cat had babies in the meantime. The kittens are cute as can be. There are though, some differences in the state of the house and how you'd like to keep them:

The litter box has just been a simple open container with sand... and it smells so bad. In the US I used to have a covered litter box with even some kind of filter material at the top to prevent bad odors escaping.

Has anyone seen a covered litter box in Chiang Mai ? Where and for how much?

Who has the best price on kitty litter?

Besides the drops you apply to a cat's skin, how do you eliminate a household flea infestation with minimal use of poisons and powders ? What do you recommend I buy, and which shop?

My offended nose and itchy legs thank you!

  9. You are helping some one commit suacide on the lay away plan as a favor.whistling.gif

Ummmm yes. True. Breathing here in hot season dangerous. Eating meat kills animals and us as well. Stress about what kills us, kills us. So yes. You are right. But that's not the question. It's a disgusting habit and a sign of being controlled by a drug. Don't endorse it at all. So....you're preachin' to the choir.

Anyway, not sure what I said that confused people. I am in CM, Thailand. I am going to the US. I want to buy cigarettes from here, for cheaper than they are in the US, to take to the US, not the other way around. So for those who got it, thanks for the advice. I'll have a look around town, and maybe just hold out for the airports. Time will tell. Having no experience with this stuff, advice is appreciated.

  10. Hey. I'm about to take a trip to the US and have a request to bring the allowed 2 carton amount back with me.

Who's got the real cigarettes - Marlboros - for the right price? What does a carton of Marlboro Red cost? I have no idea....

I don't smoke. Have never. Don't really endorse it either, but am doing it as a favor, so I could use pointers as to where in Chiang Mai to go.

    Thanks.

  11. This upcoming trip to the US will be the first one I've taken where I only have baht available and need to take some cash with me to the US. I hear Super Rich on Loy Kroh may be the best. In another thread someone referred to SK, but I don't know who they are. Who do you guys use?

Doing the exchange here is the way to go right? It's been years since I've had to do this, but it seems to me that exchanging on US soil gives a crappy return, right?

I know there are some similar threads out there, so just soliciting best updated strategies.

  12. If you fit the bill, a great chance to help someone out!

DVB staff reporter Than Htike Oo is critically ill in McCormick Hospital. He was due to undergo surgery this evening but it has been postponed until tomorrow (Tuesday) morning because of a lack of blood type-B (apparently positive OR negative). Anyone who can donate, please call his wife, Noreen: 081-980-1621

  13. Howdy Paul.

I've been here a good 10 yrs or so, and I don't really notice any difference. In my recollection, it was that they always let the dirt and mud wash out into the streets all rainy season long, since any they scrape or wash away is just going to be replaced with new stuff. I remember there comes a time - rather unpredictably - every dry season where the brigades are out en masse to clean the streets and get them clean and presentable. It usually takes a few days for them to hit all places around town. I have a feeling it always happens right before Loy Kratong and Sonagkran every year, as these are both dry season times and coincide with the city wanting to show its best side to the public.

I'm actually of the same philosophy with making the bed: It's just going to get messed up again, so why bother ?

Anyway, interesting thought/observation, PaulCM. You really recall them out in the rainy season to clean up? Let's all keep our eyes peeled and see what happens this year.

  14. if you find one please let me know - I heard one of the Spas had one

Used to be that Baan Sabai to the NW of CM city had a couple of them. Wonder if they're still there or not. The place used to be run by a Swiss husband and a Thai wife - a little bit older and conscientious couple.

  15. This is a standard component of IELTS training to test and then study and work abroad. Maybe have him/her give a look at Kru Eh's school. She divides the test up into sections and gives quite a lot of attention to writing, which has 2 very different analytical tasks to it. Also, the speaking section is quite similar to the writing actually, but builds in subject matter going from simple conversation to analyzing a given topic, answering all questions asked, and supporting that answer/opinion. It's quite a thorough way of looking at a student's preparedness to enter the Western world's academic life and being fit to give it a good go.

  16. I would think that is a good guess. If you do get bitten and do not know what kind of snake it is try and remember the colour and type of markings on the body.

Or bring the body if you kill it, or snap a pic with your phone and take that. It could be life-saving.

  17. Hey Phoebez. I poked around in Thai looking for any signs of an event like this this year, and they all seem to have happened in Jan, Mar, and May. I tried googling specifically for Jun and no dice. Too bad.

I'm a fan of fawn tien - the candle dancing - that takes place at Loy Krathong, but until then I don't really anticipate any special dance stuff coming up.
