  1. I started feeling old when I began gaining weight from my usual diet, which was just eat whatever I want whenever I want. When I was young I stayed slim on this diet for many years but at the age of 37, I actually had to start controlling what I ate because my weight went crazy.

So my answer is 37. Another factor was when I couldn't call the waitress "phi khrap", but had to start saying "nong khrap".

Never of thought of that....wife only eats the feet and livers.......when I ask for Panang Gia in a 'real' Thai restaurant wife always has to ask for the breast or they use lumps of rubber.

Yes, they prefer something that has a bit of skin, a bit of meat and some sinew. And they prefer dark meat because it's greasier and therefore more juicy, making the breasts the bit that they don't like. Same thing in Malaysia and Singapore from my experiences.

  3. It makes me laugh that chicken breasts are so cheap in Thailand, my wife says it's because nobody wants to eat them. In most Asian countries actually I have found that people generally would rather give the breast meat to their dog than eat it themselves. When I ask why, she said "it's just dry, tasteless and has no texture, Thai people like a combination of textures".

They favour the feet over the breast meat, which seems bonkers to most people from Western countries.

I have baked potatoes a couple of times a week here.

Can't say I've noticed they taste any different to the ones I ate in the UK.

What do you have on them? I quite like chilli con carne or a particularly spicy chicken vindaloo. In the UK I used to put bacon and cheddar cheese then whack them under the grill to toast the cheese, but here I can't find decent bacon or cheese.

That cave-aged cheddar from Wookey Hole was amazing.

I stopped my relations bringing stuff here that i fancied, one year they

brought some Cox's orange pippins,  Victoria Plums, and Conference

pears , they tasted nothing like i remember when i was a lad, I was

going to ask them next time to bring some Jersey Royals, but i thought

no, if they didn't taste the same i would rather just have the memories,

plate of Jersey Royals with butter , delicious, I have not been back to UK

for 30 odd years, anyone , do they taste as good ?

    regards worgeordie

Jersey Royals still taste great. A few boiled with a slice of grilled gammon from the butchers and some peas and carrots with a blob of Colman's mustard, it doesn't get any better than that.

  6. Back in those days, children used to play outside on their bikes, swim in rivers, roam miles away from home as long as they were back home in time for their "tea". And you actually had to learn things and remember them because there wasn't a little computer in your pocket that told you everything. If you wanted to look something up, you had to go to a library. If you wanted to meet your friend in the town, you had to agree on a time and place, if they were late or couldn't make it, there was no way to contact you.

Now, you've got social media which is like a cancer, telling children that they need to look and behave a certain way, and teachers are no longer teaching facts, they are indoctrinating children and telling them that there are a hundred genders and other rubbish.

And people weren't so entitled, they accepted their lot in life and just got on with it. I grew up in the 80's, when cars would break down once a month, but used to spend most of my free time fishing miles from home after school, not playing on the latest Xbox or Playstation. The Commodore 64 was a revelation for me.

It was a great time. I can't help but think that with the advance of technology, people have become more stupid because they don't actually need to know anything any more, they can just whip out their phone and Google it. I guess it was inevitable that as technology advanced, humans would become more and more reliant on it, and therefore they just don't need to retain facts.

Now, if you observe a family in a restaurant in the UK, every single family member is tapping away on their phone rather than talking about their day. It's quite sad.

Maybe if there hadn't been a worldwide shutdown, the small percentage of deaths might have become a large percentage.

    Read these articles:

    https://academic.oup.com/cesifo/advance-article/doi/10.1093/cesifo/ifab003/6199605

    https://voxeu.org/article/declining-effectiveness-lockdowns

"This suggests that the heavy reliance on lockdowns as in the early stages of the pandemic may not be advised."

"Using two indices from the Blavatnik Centre’s COVID-19 policy measures and comparing weekly mortality rates from 24 European countries in the first halves of 2017–2020, addressing policy endogeneity in two different ways, and taking timing into account, I find no clear association between lockdown policies and mortality development."

Lockdowns were not required and did not affect mortality. They have, however, destroyed the livelihoods of millions of people, and have certainly contributed towards issues with suicides, mental health issues and bankruptcies.

My father died soon after he ate a corned beef sandwich.

    I don't blame corned beef.

I'm sure that many people around the world who die would have had a haircut within the previous 30 days, but none of those deaths are attributed to "death by haircut" yet that is what's happening with covid.

That's a tongue-in-cheek comment for those of you who are confused by it.

  9. No need to be rude, perhaps you can enlighten us with some advanced statistics about how many people have died from covid, and what percentage that is of all people who have died during the same period?

And then try to justify how that small percentage of deaths warranted a complete worldwide shutdown and economic disaster?

If you have a teaching degree, experience in teaching English and teaching in English, you should try and find a teaching position with the many international schools in Bangkok. You can earn much more than your monthly pension.

Yes, I've met people teaching at some of those schools on 120k+, but of course, I'm taking their word on it. If you've got a good degree, teaching qualifications, years of experience and good references you can earn some serious dough.

  11. Covid has killed 3.75 million worldwide in roughly 18 months, of course that's terrible and sad. However, in a normal year, 150,000 die every day, so 54.75 million per year, give or take. So in a normal 18 month period you'd expect roughly 82.125 million people to die worldwide. Which means that the covid deaths to date have been around 4.6% of all deaths.  As a cause of death, this puts it behind ischaemic heart disease, stroke, COPD, lower respiratory tract infections, neonatal conditions and cancers.

And we know that many deaths which have had nothing to do with covid have been attributed to covid if that person had tested positive within 30 days. Therefore I would suggest that the actual number of people who have died FROM covid and not WITH covid is around 2.3% of all deaths worldwide. Of course any death is a tragedy, but it needs to be put into context. I certainly don't think it was worth devastating the global economy for this virus.

Wow! Different circles I guess! I have found not quite the opposite, but I have found that most women I've known do not know how to cook much at all. And anything outside of Thai dishes of course would be an absolute no-way.

I think your idea about a maid that also cooks should be a pretty usual situation and for the price you mentioned, I can't imagine that being difficult to find at all! I have a feeling that pretty much any woman who is in the income class of a maid, likely knows how to cook quite well. Although I wouldn't expect them to know much of anything outside of Thai dishes. But for that price, hopefully they'd be willing to learn and try stuff from YouTube or something. Heck, for that price, they should do the shopping too.

Yes, 100% agree, there's no way they'd be able to cook Western food.

  13. I find the portion size to be fine for me. I just add either a pinch of chilli flakes or a chopped fresh chili and mix it in, comes out to be very decent for a 69 baht ready meal. The only other ready meal I have enjoyed is the char siu fried rice they sell in Tesco:

The reductions of libido and ability are part and parcel of surviving longer than the average male.  Of course when those things happen varies from individual to individual.

I can't help but think that young men who are working can only dream of being retired and not having to work, and old retired men can only dream of being young and having a fully functioning body. Life is very ironic sometimes, you always want what you don't have at that particular time, then when you get it, you want something else.

  16. The problem with penis pumps is that you need to use them immediately prior to sex, then put some kind of restriction around the base of your penis to keep it hard. So it might work, but the girl will probably be a bit freaked out by it. Frankly, if I get to that situation, I just wouldn't bother.

Yeah, 10% drop in 24 hours is nothing. It's a buying opportunity, obviously, because crypto is the future.
