there was a thread abou ginger beer a while bike - what i meant was how do they make ginger ale?
Can it be done at home?
Tuts, you can buy a highly concentrated canadian dry in the UK, maybe you could gget someone to send you some and then you can add soda - you get it for the soda stream!
dunno...it's a patented process an' I'm sure that Canada Dry is as proprietary as Coke when it comes to the fixin's fer ginger ale...
seems to me that as wid home brewed beer yew couldn't get the fizz as wid a commercial product...
-
I know about the taste. But, how is ginger beer different from ginger ale?
ye gotta look at the fizz...Canada Dry GA has commercial quality effervescence but a ginger beer like Vernors in the US has the taste an' aroma and is good on it's own but not suitable fer mixin'...
it's weird...in the UK ye can get boddles ob Schwepps from de super that taste OK and as DSK has mentioned also in India an' also in tiny countries in the Gulf...whattsamatta wid Thailand that they can't get it right???
-
Poor Tutsi...I am now drinking "the champagne of ginger ales" and I raise my glass to you. Yep, it's gotta be Canada Dry or nothing. Never saw it in LOS and I never drank any of the soda pops after taking a swig of Sprite once. Enough sugar in that to give you diabetes.
How about a nice American cream soda float? Oh, yum.
Definitely Canada Dry for me too. Tried the Sweppes when it first showed up here and thought great, Ginger Ale. Nah, something else altogether it seemed. Ice cream float, sure would be nice.
However, all was not lost - A&W Root Beer showed up on the shelves - so black cows now for me (believe some members know what that is).
yeah...when I can find vanilla ice cream I'll do an A&W float, de wife likes dem as well...de kids turn up dere nose as they pretend that dey don't like root beer (a brutal, authoritarian tutsi towers over de recalcitrant stepdaughter an' shouts yew eat that float or I'm gonna whup yuh...)
sure wish I could find sum Canada Dry ginger...
-
Tuts, if you are in India then it is as common as coke!
Don't remember seeing it around LOS though!
oh, boo hooo
...does this mean that tutsi has another item that he has to make himself? (tutsi weeps as he adds shredded fresh ginger and sugar to boddils ob Chang soda water...)
I mean, what do fancy hotels in BKK do when a drunken canuck comes in to de bar an' shouts that he wants a rye an' ginger?
-
was down at de recently opened local tescos an' lo...Schwepps Ginger Ale!...bought four cans an' was raving to de wife 'ye gotta try dis...wonderful...'
de wife later opened a can an' had a slurp, looked at me in puzzlement an' said tastes like Sprite...I grabbed de can an' fired down a draught an' yeah...tasted like Sprite
beware Schwepps Dry ginger ale in red-orangey colored cans...tastes like Sprite...
anyone seen any Canada Dry ginger?...it usually tastes like the real item even in de middle east...if I had sum around I would halve my daily vodka consumption...a Canada Dry ginger ale vanilla ice cream float; brings back days ob heaven at grandma's house in Nashville during summer vacation...

(did dey have weenies an' marshmellows in 16th century Holland?)

Why don't you leave a day early and stay overnight in a UAE country that has VOA before going on to Saudi?
TH
'cause ye can't go onward to saudi without a visa and if staying temporarily in the UAE and applying for the visa there it would open up a raft of problems...also my employer is providing the air ticket in a PTA arrangement and that can't be completed without a saudi visit visa.
my 90 days runs out on Tuesday and I still don't have a saudi visit visa AFTER THREE ATTEMPTS...they took my money and passport and said to come back on Monday...I'm bein' squeezed right left and center, don't know who is worse the thais or the saudis...mebbe bein' homeless on the streets of LA without visa problems is a better option...

in the Robert Altman film McCabe and Mrs Miller the protagonist would break an egg inta glass ob whiskey fer his nutrition; probably neutralised any otherwise harmful effects...later, he managed to out gun 3 badazz, heavily armed assassins...he died in de end, but a lot to be said fer raw eggs...
oh, de films, de films...(tutsi languishes as a bored engineer when his true calling is as a screenwriter/auteur/critic...)

when I was workin' in de woods in Oregon on a snowy day we'd build a big fire at lunchtime an' toast our sammiches on forked sticks...nuttin' like it...was a shame when we hadda shut down de operation when de trucks couldn't get in ta take out de loads...useta cold deck if de landin' was big enuf...

Ahhhh, campfires. Great memories, Tutsi. Weenie and marshmallow roasts, cold beers from the Husky, Kumbaya...
nah...it was more like workin' down slope from de landin' in de fog when ye couldn't see nuttin'...had ta use yer ears if dere was a big chunk comin' down at ya...even a little one would kill ye if ye weren't close to a stump fer shelter...('dem liddle ones will kill yuh just as dead as de big ones!' from a busted up old guy still on his feet an' out there..)
fear an' mortal danger in de NW woods fer $7 per hour wages in 1975...but de toasted sammiches sure were nice...

The perfect snack for me: For large slices of quality bread, cut from a loaf. Lightly toasted on one side. On the other side, spread heaps of Kraft Cheese Spread and stick under a hot grill for around 30 seconds or until the cheese spread starts to form a skin and bubble up.
Orgasmic. As you eat it, the melted cheese under the skin trickles down your chin.
Down with a huge glass of ice cold milk.
Geez, Bendix, you sure you don't come from the other side of the tracks?
Don't knock it if you haven't tried it baaaaaaaaby
But, I have tried it! and then I was wondering how you toasted only one side first ...(campfire?)
I usually just stuck the raw bread with cheese slices on top in the toaster oven. But totally agree with the concept, including the accompaniment of ice cold milk.
And, Pumpuiman, cannibalism? Tee hee. I do remember my early days in Thailand and many a conversation with farang friends centred on favourite foods from home. I think those people are still alive.

I usually substitute full fat small curd cottage cheese fer the ricotta, try it sumtime...haveta think about the italian sausage fer the sauce; would haveta be bulk ground widdout casings fer a good mixture but sounds like a good idea...gonna haveta fire up de 1.2 kW Sanyo power meat grinder an' investigate...
Is there anyplace in Thailand where you can even buy cottage cheese? Never seen it except in some of the expensive hotel restaurants, but don't know where they get it from.
yeah...good question...sure ain't got none up here in de sticks but I woulda thought that maybe available in BKK. Last time I made lasagne was in Bahrain where dey got evryting...(tutsi ducks as boddils are thrown with shouts ob 'well then go back there ye miserable bastid!!!)

A very thick lasagna with generous layers of ricotta cheese, Italian sausage, sun-dried tomatoes, and just a touch of fennel.
and
A wide slice of thick hot blackberry pie with a huge scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream melting into all the cracks and crevices of the crust.

Corkscrew, those lamb chops look delicious.. My pick would be Roast Lamb with a good red wine followed by this pavlova.. If i can't have either a deep fried mars bar will do.. NOT
Roast lamb and wine. I could even have that for breakfast!
never could unnerstand de attraction ob roast lamb; usually had to smother it in rosemary an' tarragon ta hide de gamey taste...a mutton shwarma ain't half bad but it is different preparation...specialised shwarma cooks are in great demand in de middle east if ye look at de employment section ob local newspapers...gives ye a new appreciation fer de pakistani guys sweatin' over the rotisserie on de sidewalk...
now, I wouldn't mind a nice red burgundy fer breakfast wid me scrambled eggs...
great way ta start de day so long as ye don't haveta drive inta work...

)

Champ. An Irish dish of mashed potato finely chopped spring onion and some finely chopped Kurly Kale (spelling???). All mashed together with some butter, a little salt and a 'crack'of black pepper.
I miss some of those old Irish favourites...
there is a popular irish pub in Manama in Bahrain that does bangers an' champ (both pork and beef sausage available), very tasty, wid nice gravy...only 5 mins walk from our flat an' used to go down onna Friday lunchtime widde local paper an' partake. Even de wife would order sum in preference to de pepper steak on de menu, also quite nice...an' she don't even like falang food that much...one ob life's small pleasures in de Arabian Gulf...

Mmmmmmm!
yeah, an In-N-Out burger would've been my second choice...best burgers in southern California. But, a 'double-double'?...de menu must've changed but I haven't been around fer 20 years an' most things change given enuf time...
when growin' up in Pasadena in de 50s useta go down the original location on Foothill Blvd wid me auntie an' cousin, dey had better taste in things than me parents who preferred the MacDonalds down in Alhambra...de place looked like a gas/petrol station widda cubicle where the pumps would be wid 4 guys squeezed in frantically makin' up de burgers, fries and milkshakes...hence, In-N-Out Burger...Stanley Kubrick in A Clockwork Orange helped to popularise de terminology when he had de anti-hero Alex describe nights of ultraviolence wid helpless wimmin an' 'a bit ob de old in-an-out...'

a plate ob carnitas (mexican roast pork) wid rice an' beans, freshly made salsa, an endless stack ob fresh warm corn tortillas an' boddils of ice cold Superior beer...plus de special ambiance of a small mom an' pop mexican restaurant in Los Angeles...

for those living in a cold climate , hot porridge spread on hot heavily buttered thick toasted raisin bread . can be done in about 10-15 minutes.
a nice bowl of Wheateena or Cream of Wheat goes down well anytime in whatever weather wid butter an' a liddle brown sugar...preparation time about de same as mama noodles...but where to find in Thailand?
no mention ob instant noodles on dis thread : cheap, quick an' easy...whazza matter wid falangs that they don't like instant noodles? Kraft macaroni wid cheese all inna box?

I have been able to access the files on the E: flash memory by right clicking on my desktop icon then clicking on Explore. Earlier I left clicked and got the Toy.exe message...maybe has to do with the shortcut link to the drive?
anyway, problem solved fer de time being...thanks to all for your help...
-
thanks, vic...I've still got the attachments available in my hotmail inbox...it's accessing the E: flash memory drive that's got me worried...I was wondering if this 'Toy.exe' is associated with any well known viruses...
-
I just finished downloading some hotmail attachments and put them on my E: memory stick. They were all virus scanned before downloading using the hotmail antivirus utility. When I tried to get into the E: drive I got 'Windows cannot find 'Toy.exe', sounds sinister...
is there anyway to overcome the problem or is the flash drive toast?
Ginger Ale
in Western Food in Thailand
Posted
wid tonic produced in Asia dere probably high dosin' wid quinine fer de antimalarial properties wid de resultant bitterness...ain't got de concern in other places, so yer right...
in thailand de locals don't give a toss about ginger ale...it'sa falang thing...it's enough to have sumpin' that tastes like Sprite in a different package fer marketing purposes...
Somchai to his pal: in Canada they mix their whiskey with ginger ale...(they prepare their drinks widde local Schwepps and imbibe...) Somchai: tastes like Sprite...? They ponder a bit then conclude: dem falangs sure is clazy...
