Many potential issues to consider and they depend on a lot of factors:

    • What part of the UK do you intend to live?
    • Public housing - What do you mean by that? You won't get a council house if that's what you mean
    • Does your wife have settled status in the UK? Indefinite leave to remain or citizenship? A settlement visa is expensive and takes a long time to obtain
    • Education at British schools is not universally good and depends on area. Good areas are oversubscribed and you may not get a choice of school
    • Your wife may not like living in the UK - then what?
    • Thais can get very homesick being away from family and friends
    • Summer weather in the UK can be lovely; but dark, cold, damp winters? No thanks!
    • The UK is now extremely expensive to enjoy life. Can you get a good job or already wealthy?

So many things to consider. Others here will likely add their comments. Good luck whatever you choose.

Thanks for your reply. You have raised a few things that I need to consider.

  2. Hi all, as the title suggests, I am thinking about returning to the UK with my Thai wife and child. The main reason for this is education. I'm wondering if anyone else has moved back to the UK for schooling can share some other benefits of being in the UK to better sell the move (to my wife and also me).

Here are a few that I am thinking of so far:

    • Great education for free for my child
    • Access to free healthcare
    • My child can form better relationships with my family and understand their heritage
    • Automatic national insurance contributions
    • Ability to save using a Lifetime ISA
    • Cleaner air
    • Safer traffic

I would be really keen to hear from other people who have made the move, or have thought about it and decided against it. Many of the things that kept me in Thailand for so long now don't bother me too much anymore - girls (I'm married), weather (too hot for me now), nightlife (I'm too old for that). The things I would definitely miss is the liveliness of the place, the incredible condos and their price (I would be going down the public housing route in the UK), the food, and the overall feeling that I am doing something with my life as going back home would definitely feel quite mundane to me (normal job, family car etc.)

I hope this question is clear and I haven't rambled on too much. Looking forward to reading your replies!

  3. They really need to get their ducks in a row. It doesn't make sense that a backpacker fresh out of college can come and teach here with no hassle whereas us who have made our homes here are left in limbo like this. A bachelors degree and a TEFL is more than enough in my opinion. I'm sure thousands of others would echo this.

I know of two that got a fine, the prime minister, and one guy in the village where I live. Both cases were in the beginning of when fines became an option to support the government, so the village guy had to come up with 6,000 baht, I think to remember that the prime minister paid the same.

However, it might depend of area how strict the authorities are, and if someone is running, or walking, to exercise without a mask in a more rural, or isolated, area; I see several daily, both farangs and Thais...????

Was the guy in your village Thai or Farang?

  5. I have been teaching at the same school for 8 years now and have used up 4 waivers. My school never, ever mentioned a thing about this until now so I have been totally unaware about this requirement.

I live up country and teach at a local school for 33k per month. I plan on going home in the next few years when my son is 5 so I have around 3 years left in Thailand.

With that in mind, I simply cannot justify paying upwards of 150k for the PGCEi never mind afford it. I have no long term aspirations of teaching or do I long for a job at an international school. I'm happy where I am for now, with my salary and I'm too focussed on my family and teaching my classes to think about studying more.

Do I have any other options? Surely they can't put me out of work because of this, but a backpacker coming for a few months to show up hungover every Monday is all good?

I'm angry and upset thinking about it. I have a BA in TESOL and a CELTA. What more do I need to teach at a government school in Isaan?!

    Any help guys?

    Thanks,
    Frank
