เส้น could be short for เส้นทาง, in fact เส้น on it's own can also mean route or way.

So i'd directly translate it as she's entered that way since she was young, or even better - she's been that way since she was young

I think สะเทือนใจ is disturbed, not touched. I would say ซึ้งใจ

I think it's ok for the context i was looking for it in, i asked a friend before i used it and he said it was the correct usage for a funeral speech. Like to feel emotional sorrow.

สะเทือนใจ is not a right word in this situation, it's normally use when something bad happened, like when you read the news about someone has been murdered then it makes you สะเทือนใจ.

If you say "สะเทือนใจกับการพูดในวันงานศพ " it would comes off as you feel offended by the speaker. I would use mikenyork's suggestion "ซาบซึ้งใจ"as in "ผมรู้สึกซาบซึ้งใจกับการพูดในวันงานศพ" (I'm deeply impressed with the speech at the funeral) or "นั่นเป็นการกล่าวคำปราศัยที่เหมาะสมที่สุดในวันงานศพ" (That was the most appropriate speech at the funeral):jap:

I've been having further discussions about this today and you are definitely right that ซาบซึ้งใจ is the right word for what i was trying to say, as in impressed by the speech. However, my friends, a couple of them teachers, have said that สะเทือนใจ would also be appropriate to say in the situation. Although it would not get the meaning that i intended, it also would not offend. Everyone was in agreement that it expresses emotional sorrow or sadness which is what i think you get from a good speech at a funeral. Can you tell me why you think สะเทือนใจ would be offensive?

Ok sorry MikeinYork and thank you a51mas and mikeinyork. The people i spoke to, one of whom is a teacher said that they both had the same meaning or maybe i misunderstood but i did ask them ถ้าผมปรัทับใจในเรื่องการพูดที่งานศพ ใช้คำสะเทือนใจกับคนที่พูดได้ไหม -maybe i was misunderstood

I don't think you're missing anything, that's the way Thais will say it. Like, i have one older brother but if someone asks me มีพี่น้องกี่คน i will answer 2คน and then they'll usually ask if my other sibling is older or younger, or a brother or sister.

Good book, sometimes i stop and look up words i don't know and other times i just keep on reading because i get the general gist of what's going on.

I got mine for 89 baht but when i took the cellophane wrapping off it has that really cheap paper inside that they use for photocopying in the schools here. Ah well, can't complain for the price.

Example: For respecting adult people you say:เคารพผู้ใหญ่ or เคารพนับถือผู้ใหญ่ but you don´t say นับถือผู้ใหญ่

Beauty is something of an obsession for some people, but what if it is something you cannot see. My example is that i want to say - That was a beautiful speech - Would we use the same term of beauty in Thai or is there a better word?

I think the thing we have to realise here is that everyone is different, so no one on this forum is going to be able to pin point the reason for what happened from the sparse information provided. People forget important things all the time, but whether it is intentional or not it is not something to get worked up about. If you are getting worked up about it maybe you're with the wrong person.

Here's another way of looking at it. Maybe she was upset that you decided to go home for your birthday than spend it with her. I have no idea if that's true or not, but whatever the outcome i wish you luck in your quest to find happiness in a world which is so trying for us all at times.

Does anyone have any other good healthy options? If i eat noodles i always order them dry, without soup and tell them not to add any MSG too.

I speak ok Thai and the local restaurant knows me. I used to say please no sugar and msg (in thai of course) and how many times they just forgot not to put it in. Just happened to much because they work on automatic. Just imagine doing that in a restaurant you dont frequent every day the chances of getting the right stuff is even lower. You know how Thais love to please but just do it the way they are used to.. so dont get your hopes up.

I just make my own food and when i go out eating i accept that those things will be in it but i almost never eat out anymore.

I've received my tax documents already. On the envelope it says i should report to the tax office by the end of this month. If i leave it until next month, what happens? Do they impose a fine or anything?

The usual amount i hear from local people to give as a donation or to make merit at a funeral (or wedding) is 300 baht. If you know the person well do you give more? I'm interested in hearing peoples thoughts on the amount given.

If not, you can get a waiver and apply for the WP. That will give you 2 years to complete the cultural course to get another waiver.

It also depends on what kind of school it is. Universities are exempt from the requirement for a teaching license.

From what i understand from the website the school was founded by 2 people called HadjayeeIbrohim and HadjaSaynab Bunmalurd. Pretty Muslim sounding first names. I think the name of the area is called Sam-In and i assume there is a mosque there which is called the Sam-In mosque. It also says the local community is populated by mostly Muslims. The information about the school on its website is quite sparse but it seems to have a lot of sports facilities. It's the first time i've seen a mosque called by that name, normally i see them named as Masjid.

There is no age-neutral word for "brother" or "sister" in Thai--an age relationship must be expressed.

Yes, i have 2 students who are twins. The older brother's nickname is พี่ and the younger brother's is น้อง.

Well just to let you know i arrived in Penang today. I took the slip out my passport and i got checked through no questions asked.

There seems to be conflicting information on this thread on whether or not i have 7 days after the date on the slip to report to immigration. So i'm still unsure, although perhaps my best bet is to head out the country and take the slip out the passport but keep in on me in case they ask for it. If they are asking for the receipt though, i suppose that means it's not on their computer.

I've never had a reporting slip with me when I've left the country, and I have never been asked for it.

I believe I have ... although I didn't look after my 90 reporting as it was done by the office ... but then I found out they weren't doing it that often and I got a fine for reporting late (but not when I was leaving the country).
