Will this mean another run at the banks by the Bangkok people, if the banks decide to just hand out money to the farmers just from out of the blue?
No, this will not happen again, there is now a sensible junta administration, moreover Thai banks will not get involved in silly financial activities.
Sensible junta?????
I think world history has shown this to be an oxymoron.

Salmon is the most poisonous fish in the world and the next world drama.
Norway is trying to hide the truth but NGO will soon make it clear that samlon industry is killing us. Just wait and you will know...
Mate, I'm reading this with my smoked salmon and salad sandwich in front of me. Is this for real? What about my sardines?

By lowest quality, do you mean hygiene?
Anyway I think Thai food tastes much better in Australian resteraunts.
unbelivable post, ok name 5 that are better in kangaroo land
I'm inclined to agree that Thai food is better in Oz, better ingredients, cooked in sanitary conditions, by Thai chefs. Of course you are paying at least 10 times more for it.
you don't have the same taste like here in Thailand, because you had to use the same ingredients, which, if they are, cannot be fresh. Ever tried Homog with fresh Seafood in Sothern Thailand? Or Plah Nung Manao or Hoi ob Lom? or do we speak here only about fried rice pork?
Just got back from a holiday in Oz...The missus [quite understandably] thought Thai food better in Thailand..Her reasoning was the taste of the sauces. It's a bit like the Western Chinese food as opposed to restaurant food IN China..Different province, different food...Menu's are limited in Oz..I have never been able to find Hoi Tort, Keow kar moo and other street foods. Even the ubiquitous Plah Nin which I eat regularly is not available in restaurants in Brissie, though bastardized versions [with better fish] are.
Just my opinion..My favourite food is Turkish, but no chance of that In Udon!
B*gger It...I just like food...Can eat in anywhere.

I subscribed to all last premier league season to Sport 365 and the service is unreal, the fact you can watch all of the games on demand is amazing and the quality when you hook laptop up to HD is superb.
I won't be going near True, CTH or whatever Mickey Mouse company is showing the football as long as these guys are about.
They show a decent amount of rugby as well although would like to see them show more Heineken Cup matches next season
I've just downloaded it and checked the program guide...Seem to show most of the Super 15 Rugby, but hardly any Rugby League for the very few of us who love the biff game...
Back to the drawing board..

I would personally check your meter to see if other things are hooked into your unit's power. Turn off everything in your place, and flip the main breaker for your unit to the off position. Check to see if the electric meter is still ticking-away.
I have a small house that is around 100 sqm, and I have 4 AC units that total about the same BTUs as yours. My house is extremely poorly insulated. I run the AC all day every day (though at night I only run one 12k BTU unit in the bedroom), set at around 26-27C. My bill for the hot season is usually around 8k/month.
21k seems crazy high. Though maybe me being able to reduce down to one room for 8-10 hours every day makes all the difference. But somehow I don't think so, I'm only able to do that at night, when I'm not fighting the sun anyway, and it doesn't account for the extreme difference in cost.
I think either somebody is feeding off of your meter, or there is something wrong/inefficient with that AC unit.
I agree with Bobo...Something wrong here..I have 2 of 12btu ones running. 1 all night in BR and one averaging 5 hours most days in TV room..3 or 4 fans going constantly..Last month was 1500 Baht. My mate 2 houses up has a 24btu going pretty well every arvo for 6 hours and his BR...His last one was 2400..I don't know how I could get to 21000..
Get your meter and aircon tested, or see If someone Is stealing your power..
Good luck

I use cablestreamer.com a box that has all the cable shows, sports and movies and interntational news - there is nothing better as a profesional cable media solution in Bangkok.
It uses internet, I have a 4 meg internet connection which is minimal, and it never misses a beat, just plug in a lan cable for internet, and hdmi in to the TV.
Been workign for 2 years pefectly in HD. I know everyone suggests other services. But good luck finding a better system. It wont happen.
It will have ALL the matchs from Fox sports, FOX HD, Astro including the World cup football.
Been watching the premier league all of the matches also with out a problem with English Commentary.
Followed the link. Seems excellent option. From your experience, does the signal die come bandwidth throttling time...say, 1700 to 2400...Both Wiziwig and Setanta online become useless when the servers here commence international bandwidth throttling in evenings, weekends and school holidays.
Can you record on the box also?

I want to visit the UK next year so that the wife [de facto] can meet my mother. I live in Thailand on a retirement extension.
The wife has been to Australia twice on a tourist visa with the usual guarantees of support, and letter of introduction. Never been problems there, but I was living and working there, for the first visa. I don't suppose I can do the same to the UK as I haven't been resident there for 40 years, and don't hold a UK passport.
Wife has no kids, owns a property, but doesn't work...Housewife.
I've read on TV that UK visas seem harder to get than ones to Oz.
We want to go in 15 months..Any advice on the best way to approach this would be really welcome

Many people seem to keep themselves to themselves, fair enough although if someone said Hi/Hello/How are you/ etc. to me, I`d always give an answer, and a polite one at that.
Don`t let some others reluctance to respond put you off being friendly.
I`ve met some decent interesting people around the world, all just starting off with Hi or similar.
Agree. I say G'day at my gym to other farang, who usually say Hi, back. I don't stop for or expect a chat. Over the last year or so, I've talked to a few eventually, and there are some nice blokes there. Not a steroid gym. Aussie owner, and older farang and younger Thais as customers.

What you think Is expensive has much to do with where you come from....Being from Brisbane, I find fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, Pork, Chicken, electricity, gas, water very cheap. I haven't noticed the inflation effect...
I can't see Thailand ever having even near Aussie prices for anything....I don't pay general rates here either, so they can't raise those 5% a year.
I agree with the posters saying buy in season....Sensible...Now..Mangoes, In August, 3-4 months of cheap avacados will be back, then next Winter, a few months of English spinach and cheap Broccoli.

Not sure I can remember being 13...I suppose I must have been, though

Half way around the ring road in Udon on my mountain bike, 7am, rain started to get heavy...More thunder, lightning, heavier rain..Got home 7.40 drenched, ultra happy and grinning...Loved It! The missus thinks I am ting tong, and says It Is my own fault that I will have a fever this afternoon .
This has been the first rain of any note since early September here.
More please..

I think the slandering of Farang by Thais pales into near insignificance when compared with the slandering of Thais by we Farang. Just get a group of guys together, here in LOS, with or without drinks, and It doesn't take more than a few minutes before the piss taking starts. Usually about money, family ties, incompetence [driving, building, cleanliness, lack of education, etc etc wtc. I suppose sometimes It's funny , but sometimes, what I hear is vicious.
I'm happy that my Thai is so rudimentary that I can usually only understand the word "farang". Many fellas here should be thankful that most Thais don't understand English, and react to what they might hear.
Just my opinion.

she worked in a bar before, no pay, no play
let her pay for her own damn "massage" school lessons
$60 dollar in aus, ok, but that is for massage with an extra
That's not for a happy ending, or extras in OZ. $60 an hour is about right for ANY massage there on business premises. Swedish, therapeutic, Thai. Brisbane has a few Thai massage joints. Pretty ordinary really, considering what you are paying..Too soft, as the businesses are scared of litigation for any injuries that occur.

If people can't get their heads round driving on the other side of the road they shouldn't be allowed to drive a vehicle.
I remember 40 yrs ago hiring a car in Spain, and accessing my first roundabout..It was terror event for all concerned, luckily without any accident. Looking back now, It was hilarious.
Driving on the other side of the road to what you are used to needs a little practice!

Amazes me how they arrest all these highly wanted people from other countries, but yet when it comes to their own or a tourist is in need they are deaf dumb and blind.
I think all these arrests of foreigners, must come from tip offs...plus there's likely a bounty involved maybe.
But yes.....why can't they be so diligent with the locals??
I guess by tip offs u mean other agency's ,if so U R right . Thai police , special branch plus secret service couldn't find a brothel in a desert.
Are there many brothels in deserts?.

I suppose one of the most surprising things that I noticed here in LOS supermarkets, after leaving Brisvegas, was the choice of products from other countries, not available in Oz. Pleasant surprise, really. Apples, Oranges, grapes, other fruits, from New Zealand, Korea, Japan, USA. European and American dairy products, Lamb from New Zealand, etc etc. Many of the Oz brands are here as well.
I realize most aren't cheaper than Oz, but It's nice to be able to get a variety. I now know that English Bisto is as bland as Oz Gravox!
Anybody tried the California Sunshine fresh milk..Not UHT? As tasty as milk from home..and not a crazy price.
I hope Tops and Villa and Makro etc keep the imports coming in.

I'm puzzled as to why she had 20K of your money. Was she supposed to pay something else with it and now you're stuck for that?
20K sounds like a lot of walking around money for a GF to just have. ??
Not in Udon ... Up here the gals pack wads of cash, and live in six million baht farang houses....complete with new care, sin sot, and a farm.
Yep.
S@^t, mate! Obviously the guys i know here, and me have avoided this disaster..Maybe we don't have wads of cash to give them, or we're sensible. 6 million baht get's you a hell of a place here as well...Obviously a hiso neighbourhood..Was a smiley intended, and missed in your post?

personally, I don't care for Moccona Coffee. If you're a real coffee lover, try VPP. It's a Thai coffee that I have found to be very consistent.
I buy the Espresso Blend and use it in a drip coffee maker. It's available at Tops for B150 for 250g.
Preaching to the converted. I get the Espresso Blend VPP also, at Villa Market. Haven't seen It at Tops here. Same price as you though, 150 Baht. It's Arabica blend and in my $100 coffee machine, produces a long black superior to Bon Cafe coffee coming out of $1000 machines.

You chose to marry a Thai female and live in Thailand so therefore you must follow and accept the Thai culture. She only has one set of parents and it's her duty in Thai culture to take care of them and if you choose not to follow her to Issan, it puts both of you in an awkward situation in culture and in respect. Once you married your wife, her parents become your parents. The village will not see the respect which you must have to care for family forever. This is something which you should of thought of when marring her. Yes you will survive, you survived moving and living in Chiang Mai. You must not allow your wife to ''loose face'' in Roi Et and you must not allow yourself to become the ''bad farang'' and be labeled jai dum. Your wife loved and accepted you and you must love and accept her fully. You will be pleasantly surprised with the results. You married the village and her culture when you married your wife. Have an open mind and it will be filled with great rewards. Issan is wonderful. No other place on earth I would rather be other than Bangkok. Good luck my friend.
With all due respect, you appear a little, maybe, "brainwashed?"...The OP chose to live in Thailand, and take care of the woman he married. He doesn't have to "follow" the Thai culture, only respect It. She might have only one set of parents, and apparently at this moment, she only has the OP for a husband. He is in no way obligated to move to Issan to take care of her family, which might, by the way become more extended after he arrives In her village. The OP is 70, and needs to be very near, or In a city with viable healthcare infrastructure, in my opinion, not outside a village.
This BS you talk about with Jai dam and face loss, and "you married the village when you married her" is wrong. I married a woman from a village near Sisaket, and settled in Udon, due to healthcare, English speaking community, infrastructure , etc, and take care of the wife's family from here. We go to the village 4 times a year for a week. It's my choice, and the wife is ok with It,. [so she says]
I'm sure he can love her without feeling some sycophantic need to feel totally totally accepted [used], as you suggest.
Issan is a wonderful place..I live here...But the Op should make decisions on HIS lifestyle and health preferences and needs..Not the wife's family's..

The usage of the word faggot is very, very derogatory. You are clearly very homophobic and I will find it rather amusing when "the little faggot" shows up and demands more money. You deserve to be extorted. Rot in pieces!
Sometimes I wonder what we ever did before PC...................
Perhaps the offender was gay? If it was me, apart from paying him, I think I would be extremely derogatory towards him as well.................
AFAIK, the term wasn't directed at you, stop being paranoid, less of the hissy fits please.
One of the great things about moving from the capital of PC, Australia, to live here is that I can basically talk in any terms I want without the thought police on my case. Faggot doesn't seem much of a derogatory term to me, especially as it is being used to talk about a Thai goon.
If you poor dears out there can't handle certain words or phrases without a PC dummy spit, then go back to the US, or Oz or the UK..you'll be protected from the nasty name callers, there.
Voltaire would be turning in his grave if he heard half of the whinging about name calling nowadays.
Oh my! Who is having a dummy spit now??
I wonder what subculture you come from. Probably from the fat gutted, beer swilling ugly group who cannot get a girl back in OZ......... WAIT! That is not possible - you were able to pretentiously mention Voltaire - who in fact was very much against the intolerence you now display. If he was not turning before then there is certainly some ground disturbance occurring somewhere in France right now.
Wrong. Fitness centres and mountain bikes. Not fat or beer swilling. Had 2 wives in Oz. Friends with both. Now got one here. Nice girl.
I suppose you like to pin personalities, body shapes, etc on somebody because they don't fit in with your expectations. I don't agree with you..GET IT??? I'm allowed to not agree with you...That is not intolerance. How you can call somebody intolerant because they have an opinion different to you is beyond me, but your type of Lefty PC types are usually full of righteous indignation against people who think differently..
Anyway...You had the dummy spit..i was right about that..You can now watch the BBC/ABC, read the Guardian and feel smugly satisfied that you identified another of those damned bigot/racist/fascists, who won't toe the line..
I won't be responding to any further dummy spits from you either, so you can have the last word, if you want..
Going to swill a couple of coldies now.

I am not a ''troll'' nor asleep, and lived a very happy quiet life for 16 years in Thailand, and new to TV but sad with some of the stupid replies
The retirement visa extensions are available in Pattaya, Bangkok and Udon, that i know of..I've got friends in Pattaya who've been doing it for 5 years. 12000 Baht and through and Immigration officer. In one case, the immigration officer OWNED the shop we went through. False accounts were available from a bank [First letter "K"]. Always seems to be the same bank, even here in Udon. The extension is available here for 14000 that I know of.. Won't say any more about here...Might have to use it one day if the A$ does one of it's all too often collapses in the near future.
Married a Thai and appear to do nothing right !

I don't think university educated and hi so go together either. My missus did 4 years at Ubon uni in accounting, has no drive or ambition, knows next to nothing about outside Thailand [and not a lot of inside], loves to sleep, facebook and watch TV. She buys nothing brand name, by choice and prides herself when she gets a good second hand jeans deal. She's pretty dark, to boot. DEFINITELY not hi so. Her 3 sisters from the same village/farm are uni educated and anything but hi so.
It's pretty easy to spot hi so/s at Central Plaza, and I'm sure they don't all have degrees.
