I don't know one of them who wants to return to Thailand other than a holiday.

My Thai wife of 14 years (lived in the US for 13 years) feels the same way. She sees LOS for what it is and preferred to visit family every other year. Lately, she has become more travel savvy and would rather avoid Thailand all together if she could.  We just got back from France, the whole family loved the vacation, and she could see herself living there esp. near the southern coast. Prices are not that bad and everything from transportation to shopping are very convenient.

Of course, cheap labor workers are making $20 an hour now in the U.S. with health benefits.

Especially in Bangkok, I see more Thais in these places getting coffee then anyone.

Some sort to hiso status I guess they like to take photos of their 150 b coffee.

I think Starbucks coffee stinks in fact would much rather get a 7-11 coffee then the stinky skunk stuff they serve.

Peet's coffee is much better and their selection blows away Starbucks.

Living in the Bay Area, we're lucky to get Viet coffee ( Cà phê sữa đá and cà phê đá) .

The average height of a Japanese male now is around 172 centimeters, I believe, which is almost the same as Americans. Go to a museum in Japan and you'll be amazed how short the samurai were. They were literally midgets.

very true. the same can be said about Europeans of the past. going all the way back from ancient times (Alexander the Great was 5'4) to the medieval period (knights were 5'7 avg.), the homes/castle doorways and rooms were designed for people under 5'6 or shorter.

And my income could increase by 400%, if consumer confidence returns to normal, if interest rates drop, and if everyone decided at once to choose to patronize my business. And at the same time, I can jump over the moon, mine gold from the local river, win the lotto both here and in the US, get rid of all my health problems, and anything else I wish will come true.

And talk to us about the sacrifices you fools are willing to make, to get tourism back. It is not magic. You will not open your doors and have millions pouring in again. Get that? When you kick an animal that is already ill enough times, it eventually dies. Your industry is dying. You have sabotaged it to no end. And this started long before Covid, so stop with the excuses. Real men take responsibility for their mistakes. Punks, juveniles, and men with undeveloped emotional natures refuse to take responsibility for anything, and it makes them look like more of a fool.

The very first thing would be to repeal the anti foreign wine bill, that was passed by a few very corrupt senators way back when, to protect an anemic local wine industry. They are losing billions of dollars a year in revenue, that would be had from an 80% or 100% wine duty, instead of 365%. The five star hotels would have major wine events, and the entire industry would flourish here. Billions earned, and alot of jobs, you fool.

Thailand keeps droning on and on and on, about how they want wealthy tourists. Again, what sacrifices are you willing to make? Rich tourists like to spend money when they travel. And they cannot do that here, as they do not like getting taken for a ride. Most wealthy people are smart with their money. Thailand could be making a fortune on a 25% luxury tax, instead of the 100% of more, which discourages most people from buying. How many people do you see in the luxury stores here? They are almost always completely empty. Inane. Beyond inane.

The most common complaints I have heard from wealthy friends who visit, is that we will never return to Thailand, because the wife cannot shop. She refuses to get taken for a ride, and will not spend $12,500 on the new handbag she has her eyes on, as it is $4,500 at home, and elsewhere. Rich people tend to be savvy and smart. The Thai authorities continue to insist, based on their policies, that these people are dumb. Go ahead. Continue with your nonsense. Maybe. Basically, the tourism industry here has been sabotaged. And it will be long term.

Not to mention the tax on wine  imports are too high! Just messing with you Mike. Lol

I live here and it is without doubt the a***e end of nowhere.

No point in driving anywhere.....everywhere is virtually identical......green as far as the eye can see and roads lined by ramshackle sheds.

No bars, no decent shops, no restaurants, no entertainment....other than banal music played at deafening volumes........I am developing my exit plans.........got to get out for my own sanity.

the most truthful post on Issan yet!!

Interestingly enough, I was in Global the other day and a larger than normal percentage of employees were mask-free which gives me the impression that a lot of masking is due to corporate policy.  What this begins to show is what percentage of Thai are worried vs those who are not.  It's about 50-50% right now from what I can see.  But for those who are worried - please for your own peace of mind... mask-up and make sure to get mRNA Covid shots whenever they are recommended and offered to the public.

Let me preface by saying, if you wish to continue to wear masks, by all means,  carry on. With that said, I watched lots of YouTube videos on Thailand from vloggers to travel related stuff. I'm noticing more and more people from issan to the south and anywhere in between no longer wearing masks. Bangkok is slowly doing it as well,  but as the capital and symbol of " obedience and conformity " it will take a bit longer.  I almost recognized Thailand again before the pandemic lol.

Prostitution of one of Thailand's most successful exports. They can be found over much of the world and even in small towns. The places named here in Finland are not exactly metropolises. Very enterprising of them. Especially when they discover, as the article says, that their Thai education counts for absolutely nothing in the real world.

All true, but when the Thai " victims" get arrested by the local authorities,  it's called human trafficking and these masseuse will claimed they were unaware of the business they were involved with. ????

I prefer Indian people over some others.  Yes, they so walk in groups.  On the sidewalks, streets, sometimes in the middle of a small soi clogging up traffic.  But, they generally seem pretty quiet and not out to cause a major problem.

I find it funny how many Thai ladies claim they do not go with man India.  Yet, a lot of the India men are going into shops off Soi Buakhao and Thai ladies walking around the malls holding hands with man India.

NOT only that it's a myth perpetuated by western men who loved hearing that from bar girls. there are countless Indian men/ Thai women marriages and relationships over the last century in LOS. Bottom line, $$$ is the international language with these ladies and with the economic situation after the pandemic, you won't see too many being picky.
