  1. It isn't just Thailand, it's happening everywhere.

In the West we are in a permanent emergency/crisis (covid, war, climate). People are scared and getting poorer (the middle class is being destroyed).

Thailand has been affected by the covid pandemic only and some inflation due to covid and the war. But I'd say that the West is in a much worse condition. Economically and socially.

I find the people here to still be friendly and smiling, but less than before. The occasional 'hate you look' didn't happen before. And they are direct on money more than before.

  2. Sorry to say but with your history none of the embassy around Thailand will be easy for you.

I am afraid that you did not find a reputable agent who could have helped you, if you still have time left then follow this way. Usually good reputable schools can also help with in-country visa conversion, but it seems you failed here as well. Maybe you did not organize your stay in Thailand that good, and now you are in a difficult situation. If you can, take your gf with you and spend 6 months in Vietnam.

Thailand has been facing a decline in Western tourists for a decade now. There are a dozen good reasons why Westerners don't visit Thailand as much as they used to. I was recently in Phuket and I would estimate the population of foreigners was 40% Russian, 20% Arab, 20% Malaysian and Chinese, 15% Indian, and about 2% Westerners and a sprinkling of some others. It was a low end crowd.

The sad truth is that Thailand is not doing anything to improve itself they are making absolutely no effort to tackle air quality environmental issues traffic congestion or any other problems plaguing the nation. It seems to be a combination of sloth lack of vision and extreme arrogance.

Are you saying that the Russian, who I bet are more blond, taller and blue-eyed than you, aren't Westerners?

I am unclear after reading this (and a friend is interested in the ED visa):

What does it mean to "...clear my passport from the ED-visa status"

I know I can check with various schools, but does anybody happen to know current rates for any bona fide Thai language schools that would qualify one for a 1-year ED visa? My friend was quoted 27K through an "agent" for Excel Language School, with a quarterly 5K fee if you don't really want to study or 1900 THB quarterly if you actually want to attend classes. Is there some special 90-day reporting required, other than the normal (free) 90-day reporting?

You can budget about 35k baht for a legit 1 year course to pay to the school. Then you have Immigration fee: visa convertion from tourist/exempt to NON O about 7-10k baht (not always, it depends, you could go to an embassy outside Thailand and apply for NON O), extension every 90 day (1900 b). 90 day report is free, do it yourself. Grand total is about 45-50k for 1 yr legit school.

  5. It is an extremely arrogant attitude to live in another country and pretend that the local people speak your language. To be honest, if I was thai I'd easily send you all to hell, especially those of you who get mad at me for not understanding your slang.

That being said, it's a very difficult language to learn, but this is no excuse, if you're living here you should at least show to locals a little bit of interest in learning and speaking their language. Otherwise you are just a colonialist.
