  1. For a girl her age and pregnant, it seems like too much to me.

Her parents should be paying you :o

But if it makes the wife happy, and it's no skin off your nose......everybody's happy.

Remember this.....you are marrying your wife's family as well. This is not something to be taken lightly.

You are now their "Social Security Benefit". A very real and serious fact.

You and your wife, and any other of her brothers and sisters will be responsible for the parents care in their old age, and when problems arise in the present. This is just how it's done.

Be fully aware of your obligations before you marry. I'm happy knowing I provide a "safety net" to my new parents, I love my new family as my own......but I've read stories of divorce resulting because of a farang's lack of familiarity with this custom.

I'm not trying to talk you out of it......I couldn't be happier......just know that your marrying a family, and with your marriage comes implied responsibility many farang are not familiar with.

Good luck to you.....all the best,

    Eric and Pan

4 years of married bliss :D

Im older than my g/f parents..Does that mean they will all take care of me in my old age

  2. There is a lot of sinister things going on here in the land of smiles.

    1. Continued anti-government protests

    2. The "apparent" murder of the auditor of one of Thaksin's companies

    3. A large noise maker close to the King's palace on Coronation Day

Three activities seemingly unrelated....but are they ? One can weave a web of conspiracy theories until the cows come home but one fact remains. These events are designed to cause concern across the community and, in one case [just my opinion mind you], perhaps silence a possible leak to what went on during the Thaksin years.

The taking of a human life is to be condemned. I don't care what colour or creed that person is. To denounce the Muslim faith because of a group of hardcore fanatics is to do a grave injustice. Let's not forget that it is not only Buddhist followers who are being killed. It is indiscrimate and takes no account of gender or age. These people are criminals, nothing more. Manipulated young men who are more than eager to carry out the bidding of those in charge. It is to be hoped that these "masters" can be found and locked up......legally.

    Strung up imo,

  3. We awoke at 8 am to a gentle rain, and now the only rain is sung by X-Japan, Endless Rain, although nothing lasts forever. I'm surprised that so many of us who live near the airport report very different amounts of rain.

I'm almost getting chilly and wet, just thinking about my upcoming visit to Ireland and Russia.

Raining here in sydney too.. only been back 5 days and sick of the place already.also thinking about my return trip back to los in july, ticket booked and counting the days

Took you 5 days to get sick of Sydney - took me less than 5 HOURS when I went to the rocks for lunch and I bought the first round of four beers, handed over a $20 note and got asked "so where's the rest, mate?" $6.50 for a schooner!! IN A PUB!!! Bloody Highway robbery.

    :o

    CB

Agree with you cb, and my mistake, i should of said 5 min;s

  4. Instead of doing visa runs

just pay jour overstay 8 months at the airport [20.000 Baht]

    and live with the risk

that the police ask for your pasport

inland, way before you leave Thailand

    and risk jail time

Were you the guy who was paying the 20,000 baht fine on saturday afternoon at the airport, if not that means you arn;t the only one doing this

  6. If it is too loud for you guys, either you are getting too old :o or you do not know the alternatives. Yes Discos are loud in general, but I do not consider the Pattaya Discos as extreme. Sure not a place for serious communication though....

Took a friend to Hollywood in pattaya, he drank his drink and said he was going, he was there about 5 mins, i stayed on with my girl and another friend and his girl, seen him the next day and asked him why he left so early, his reply TOO LOUD, our reply to him not loud enough.

  7. Thank you, Mac, for an excellent story and pictures.

There is a world of difference berween the songkran festivals in the villages and towns, now.

We received a message that a village well off the Highway, back against the forested hills, where my wife has some old friends from girlhood, was making a special effort to raise the money to roof a bot (ordination hall) that they are having built at their temple. They were looking for sponsors at 10 baht per tile. My wife got busy and raised 100 tiles each from our younger son in Bangkok, our older son who is a newsreader in Udon, from me, and from the housekeeping.

So off we went to the festivities. We were too late for the parade round the village with the banana-tree stems holding all the split canes with banknotes in them and the dancing in procession, but in time for the formal donation to the abbot. Bless them, they produced a plastic chair for me to sit on during the service, once I had wai-ed to the monk.

The temple grounds were throbbing. I love the way it is all mixed up. Concert party on stage, kiddies roundabouts, formal religous tableaus and ceremonies, and lots of eating and drinking.

You have reminded me to take a look at the video that I took and the stills. If any are any good, I'll post them here later.

And i thought all the action was at suk, soi 4,

ah well looks like i will have to go burrirum next year

  8. Bangkok: (the basics)

    1. Tour the Palace.

    2. Take a river tour, great photo op along Bkk's klongs (canals),

    3. Visit the ancient ruins,

    4. Take a side trip to the Floating Market,

    5. Shop, shop, shop, great deals and novelties you can only find here

    Agree with that.
    Pattaya:

    1. Visit Nong Nooch Gardens,

    2. Have a lobster dinner over one of the many pier restaurants,

    3. Work on your tan,

    4. Parasail or take a day charter and explore nearby islands,

Dont go there. It may put you off Thailand.IMHO

Chiang Mai is great. If you want beaches. Then fly to Krabi and head to Railay Beach. Or only 3 hours from Bangkok on a Bus is Koh Samet.. AVOID SAMUI. IMHO

Then theres nana plaza, soi cowboy patpong in bkk, plus walking street in pattaya, just to mention a few

  9. I was so concerned about this new imposition on farang that I rushed straight down to my local 7-11. I asked the young chap behind the counter if I could check out his dongle. We are meeting tonight for drinks. :o

Hey must have gone to the same 7/11 store

my Thai wife went down and asked to see if she could see his dongle and was told he already had a full appointment book for tonight, had a smile on his face like a Siamese cat

Thought your come back was very good

    still laughing

Hope all my friends back home have good humor when they recieve my email today to tell them my new Thai wife is 3 1/2 months pregnant, and I returned to be with her 1 month ago

you could always blame the 7/11 guy and his dongle

  11. Why would anyone go to all the trouble of making a snake web page and then give it the wrong title? No, these snakes are non-VENOMOUS, not non-poisonous.

Because we are not all native engrish spikkers. Whoever made that website is german, so he/she may have used the wrong terminology; still a nice snake reference.

Anyway, I haven't seen that snake since I took the pic so he is either gone or hiding somewhere.

Who cares lingling, they are bloody horrible so just kill it, that way dangers gone. As far as vermin control is concerned get a rat trap they catch more anyway than a once a month eating snake, bastard things especially around kids, kill them all.

    Regards Ewelve

They look better when there head is missing,Where's that shovel when you need it,,

  12. Anyone know if there are any restrictions?

This crossed my mind when I read your post, and I'd welcome opinions on it (I'm speaking of America, but perhaps parallels exist for other countries?)

How well do the homeland government agencies cross-reference money movement? I know that in the US the bank is required to report any transaction of over $10k to some government agency (due to money laundering laws, I believe?) Would it be possible that the IRS (tax agency) is included in the loop?

My concern is if you transferred money out specifying "for purchase of condo" and then spent it on something else, if you were audited by the IRS later, would they want to know all about that condo, and whether you made a profit on it if you no longer held it?

Australia is much the same, you can transfer as much as you want as long as you have the money in your bank, It only becomes a problem when you turn up at the bank with a travell bag full of cash, then they start to ask questions

  13. Thanks for the information folks.

I`m going all the way to Mukdahan. BTW, how far is Mukdahan from Ubon Ratchathani!

I arrive Ubon Ratchathani evening so I will probably stay over one night before I head further to Mukdahan.

Laithong hotel looks great. How far is the hotel from Ubon Ratchathani airport!

    Regards.

    :o

    Hi Felt

Laithong not so far, but best is if you get mailt o them as they have they own van stand-by in airport all the time, so they will pick u up if u desided to go there.

Mukhadan from ubon, well that depends how u wanna travel?

mini van 2 to 2.5hrs,, depends of tractors on the road.

I might drive under 2hrs,,,it's good road mostly...

Take taxi to the bus station outside town, and get the bus to mukdahan, cheap and easy, i think the last bus goes about 5pm, or if you stay ploy palace they can arrange for you to get picked up at the airport, ive used both options

    Dong

Do you actually use those local red open air busess? i see them them time to time capsize by the road,, but be adventure that one.

I have to say on my behave, i have never use the bussess and will never use as i see them driving like lunatic's and ofcourse this accident of tour buss,,, it has been said buy some one who survived tha tthey inform driver abt the small fire and ignored that,, i mean how dangerous is that....

Not saying that driving car is safer but at least if one hire small car and driver can tell him slow down or dive safer...

But i have to say that i heard good comment's abt bussess as well, few days ago friend of mine came from Pattaya to ubon with 2 fllor tour buss and they had sofa and everything in the 2nd floor and he was there all alone...how cool is that and there is buss hostess all the time,, like own privet buss...

    question for both sides,,

Good & Bad Comments about open air busess, and if some one has any "Closed" calls and if you are still using busessesssssss

Marco, It was a slow trip with many pickups and drop offs on the way,i like to travell with the locals, its an experience, But compared to the bus trips i have had in laos, well thats another story

  14. The motorbike which approached on the inside of the truck at speed slammed into the undercarriage of the truck and the man was crushed under the vehicle. The truck driver, Khun Supachai aged 24, who Police determined was not at fault remained at the scene and explained his side of the story to Police.

    The truck driver stayed around!

    This alone deserved a headline.

I suppose it would have been a bit hard to drive off with someone wedged between the wheels

  16. A long time ago ... I have been to one "Boum Fai" near Nong Kai, actually on the Laos side, and this was great fun.

It was a bit scary the way they launch the rocket ... you got to be drunk to be so close to the rocket with a lighter ...

But a lot of Fun !

Nver been to the one in Yasothon.

  17. Hiya Buckaroo.

I was over from England in Janurary this year. Managed to open an account with Bank of Bangkok. The only

Small problem i had was no permanent address. My girlfreind put her address forward problem solved. I would sugest

    keep trying.

    Best regards jb1.

I think it all comes down to who you get at the service desk,

I had the same problem when openning an account. didnt have a permanent address. So i gave them the address of the hotel, My problem solved..

mind you i had tried many times and many banks in different places, and always got knocked back,I was almost ready to give up, keep trying your luck could change at the next bank..mine did!

  18. Why do people keep dragging up old threads? I get all interested & then find out whatever the problem was has been "dead & buried" for a year (or 3 in some of the threads that have been resurrected lately). Grrrr!

Same same. i got caught on this one too, plus a few others, Have to check the use by date next time

  19. Hiya all,

Man i had the best time of my life in February. I am hooked. After coming home from 30 days in LOS, i have booked a ticket to come back. How long does one have to wait before allowed another 30 day tourist visa. Can someone tell me the regulations please. I don't want to get to the Airport and they say sorry sir but ya haven't been gone long enough..

    Thanks for replies.

Incidentally, if anyone is researching accommodation in Hua Hin, ya gotta stay at the Thiparai guest house, next to the Marriot, behind the verdana .. Excellent.

It only takes one trip to get hooked on los, well it did for me

I ended up going back 2 more times in the same year after my first trip.

now its a regular thing for me to make three/ four trips a year

back again in 12 days time, oh my buddha i love the place..
