  1. 1. Take TEFL training in Ban Phe with TEFL International, or a Celta course at ECC.

Make sure you know what you are doing. Get some good texts and supplementary materials. A computer and color printer, or hand made art materials for making your own supplementary materials. A tape recorder and some tapes.

    2. Find a place where you want to live.

    3. Make friends with your neighbors. It would be a good idea to take some Thai lessons in there somewhere!

    4. Get someone to help you recruit students, place ads in thai newspaper, make flyers in Thai etc.

Teach at your home or at your student's place in your spare time. If in your home, have a room set aside, such as an office, which is for teaching/business only and looks that way.

    5. Put a small, discreet sign out front and maybe some flyers around the hood.

    6. Stay out of anything remotely resembling a compromising position with your students (ie female). Be professional.

Congratulations you have a part time job.

Or you can always go work in a school and deal with all the hassles that go along with it. I'd choose scenario 1. I never did it myself, but have heard/read from people doing this on the net. If the money isn't important, that's great, but you can make decent money. Better if you don't have to work so much and it's fun, tho.

    Best of luck.

  2. I am looking for a place to teach yoga, meditation and even English if necessary. In Thailand or neighboring country. If anyone is looking for a good yoga teacher for their retreat, center or school, or you know of a place that's looking, please let me know. You can see my site for details on my approach to teaching. Thanks!

  3. Sorry for posting this here, but it seems like the best place for like minded people to find it. I'm a yoga teacher and I'm looking for a place to teach in an appropriate setting, preferably a school or orphanage, where I can teach yoga, meditation and even English. If anyone can point me in the right direction or knows of a place where there's a need to be filled, I'd very much appreciate your help. Thailand or other neighboring countries.

    Thanks

  4. I have a 10 year visa for India, which I got in the US 2 yrs ago. Youre supposed to stay max 6 months unless you register with the local police. But like Thailand the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing and no one cares anyway. The rules are just rules and most of the time irrelevant. I met people who'd been there 10 years or longer with no formalities. It's more like the Wild West than LOS is.

I stayed 6 months, but I found it pretty rough going. I lost a lot of weight (didn't have much to begin) and struggled to stay healthy (I'm normally never ill). On the way home for a break I stopped in Thailand and that was it, I was hooked.

The food in India is nowhere near as good as here. Yes it is cheap but it's DIRTY, SMELLY, MASSIVELY OVERCROWDED and in general it's one hassle after another. People in general are not nice. You are seen as a source of cash - even more obviously so than here - and people can be quite rude aggressive. In Thailand at least they smile politely while digging into your pockets. India can be nice, especially in the south, but it's a bumpy ride. All that said, I will go back. It is a fascinating country. And it's got better internet than Thailand.

  5. I'd steer you towards 3ix 3ix.org.

They recently produced my site: www.traditionalnoni.com

(we're still editing content, but go have a look.)

Astounding service and attention to every detail not just of your site but your business as a whole and then how best to approach the design of your site and how to promote it. And not expensive.

I spent weeks looking for a developer and talked to half a dozen people. I went into development with one outfit who just left me hanging after 3 weeks of no progress and failed promises. James at 3ix picked up the ball and carried it home. I wish I had gone with them in the first place.

    Best of luck.

  6. I am very interested in if anyone has experience with Vientiane in Laos ?? I have a close friend who is Laos (Laoation ?? please excuse my ignorance) who I would be more than happy to spend a few days with and visit a country I have never been to. If thier office was still issueing multiple entry B's that would be a perfect combination.

Theoretically you can get the B visa in Laos, but you should either phone/fax ahead to get their long list (12 items) of requirements and make sure you have them all before going, or take everything you can think of and try working with one of the "agents" out front of the consulate. These guys have been known to perform minor miracles. Bottom line: Iffy, but possible.

  7. Check out 3ix.org. Great deals on full featured hosting and the James there is a superstar.

Generally servers in the States are what you want. The problem with internet in TL is the pipeline from here to there is constricted. If your hosting servers are over there, most people won't be affected, just you when you try get your mail from TL. :D

Not that bad most of the time, actually. :o

  8. AVOID the busses in Thailand as much as possible! They are not well maintained or well-driven, the aircon is either freezing cold or doesn't work at all, the ride is very uncomfortable and there will likely be some Thai pop music cranked up to max volume.

Trains are definately the way to go whenever possible.

Also stay away from tuk-tuks and non-meter taxis as much as possible.

  9. Why not save yourself a lot of time and trouble and just buy a Mac.

Then you'll know who won the battle for quality (if not the price war). :D

Top notch OS AND top notch hardware, right out of the box.

My 500 Mhz iBook blows my 1.7 Ghz PC out of the water. It's not even funny.

A big part of the problem with PCs IS the cheap hardware.

Time is money and at the end of the day you save tons of time on the Mac, in many ways; and obsolescence isn't such an issue either.

Sorry, don't mean to be a snob, I'm just frustrated on a daily basis trying to get serious work done on a PC. :o

  10. I love my ibook. Even tho it's only a 500 mz running OS 9.1 I can crank out work 11 times faster than the P4 W2k setup in the office.

Also makes a killer stereo and DVD player.

Just curious - How much do you want for yours?

  11. Knew to Forum and every time I read and learn more the more I want to go out to thailand..so far been concentrating on pattaya because of certain scuba programs.

Which SCUBA programs? Just curious. Great diving all over the region.

I'd agree with the suggestion to check out Phuket, Krabi and the Andaman coast.

There is fantastic diving around here and off the Burmese coast as well.

This 6 month instructor package isn't necessarily a great idea. I could be a rip off (depends). You could get your basic cert, then get your hours in working for an operator anywhere, including Ko Tao, Samui, Phuket, wherever, and it might cost you a whole lot less in the end. Plus you won't be stuck in Pattaya, which could get old very fast, or expensive very fast, depending on your proclivities. :o

Just come over...you'll like it here. And better to do your research on the ground. Everything is different when you're actually here and have had a good look around.

Just one reference, there's an outfit called SEAL in Phuket (among dozens of others), don't know if there on the web but see if you can find them.

True, you don't run into Yanks as much as other Falangs. I'd guess it's coz there's not as many of us around and we don't tend to organize into nationalist 'clubs' as our European cousins seem to do. :D

    Have fun.

  12. I have good words about INet ... good service, connections that work, people that actually respond to your questions...

Bad words for Loxinfo... Stay away.

If you're going dialup, get a couple of temporary account cards from a couple of different ISP's and try them out. In any case the second one will come in handy when the first one doesn't work.
