Upon the fall of the Berlin wall, ex chancellor Helmut Kohl assured Putin that there would be no "eastward expansion" of NATO.  But that's exactly what happened. Looking at the map, as a Russian, I would also feel "encircled". The eastward expansion of NATO was absolutely uncalled for.

As much as I despise the Russian government for their illegal occupation of Ukraine and Georgia,(not the Russian people)

there is alot of truth to these statements.

Ever since the Crimean war, WW1 and WW2, Russia has been at odds with western Europe over expansion.

Neither side was 100% right or wrong.

Crimea was England and France stopping Russia from taking over the Ottoman empire, both World wars were from treaties falling apart or ignored.

This would fuel some kind of paranoia of Nato expansion, but unfortunately the powers that be in Russia took it to another level, feeding that fear for an excuse for a land grab.

Nato has never "expanded", member states want to join. If I am not mistaken, Russia asked to join Nato and/or the EU in the 90's, but the European leaders and others shut it down as a drag on the economy as Russia was not doing well in that department. That was probably a mistake, as the world may have been a more peaceful place now.

This being said, the "Special military action" has saved the country of Taiwan and South Korea from anything for a while.

Reason being, this has showed China and DPRK that the current Soviet style military isn't relevant in modern warfare, they will go back to the drawing board for a while and figure something out.

This is my opinion only, And I respect everyone's differing views.

Actually I'm sort of answering my own Question here BUT ....

10 years ago My Ex decided to keep my son's Thai passport and not renew my daughters Thai Passport.

The kids were living with me so I though I'd test the waters and flew with my son to KL and back the next day on his British Passport, Phuket Airport Immigration weren't happy but allowed it. I did the same the next month with my daughter. So after that they were technically here on British Passports and I got them one year Ed Visas.

(When I got Sole Parental Control a few months later I then renewed their Thai passports and they've used them to enter/leave Thailand ever since).

Hence I think I'll push/pay for fast EMS post back with the passport from Phuket.

Plan B Emergency travel doc but not sure if one can get in Phuket,

Plan C head to Phuket Airport and ask Immigration if my son can leave on his British passport....!

    Plan D delay UK flights...

And put a reminder for 5 year time for new Thai passport for son !

For 30+ years my wife had been getting 5 year passports, but the last time, my BIL went with her and asked the clerk if a 10 year was available. 3 days later a 10 year PP was in the mailbox. May want to ask for one if they offer it.

  3. I have a quick question, It may have been answered already, but i'm not going to slog through 38 pages of replies.

If I send 3million baht later this year, but am not in country more than 180 days, I don't owe anything as I do not reach the time in country threshold.

Next year, I am not in country more than 180 days, again no tax owed as the time in country threshold has not been met.

The year after, do I owe anything from the prior two years if I stay more than 180 days?

The only money sent was the original 3million from 2024, but not more than 180 days in 2024, 2025, but 2026 I am in over 180 days. Will I ever owe anything? This is all savings that has been taxed in the US.

These are hypothetical numbers and dates, nothing has been sent yet.

    Thanks for the replies.

  4. My wife said that teachers in her day (late 1960's) didn't put up with any crap. The kid in question would have had the sh!t beaten out of him with a piece of bamboo (The female teacher would have asked one of the male teachers to do so), then when the parents heard about this from the teacher, more bamboo sticks at home for embarrassing them. Seemed to work a treat, as the older generation respected their elders more than this lot.

Half my career was in the airline industry and had/have friends and relatives in it as well but they were tech and cabin crew. Some of them had first hand knowledge of sims, line checks and upgrades being passed through means not generally requiring proficiency and competency. There are several SE Asian airlines I would never ever fly on.

Would you share what you have heard? And which carriers?

  6. I have wondered about this exact scenario; but my wife is a few years older than me. I believe the Will and Usufruct is probably the way to go.

The most difficult thing we are facing is who to put in the will to own the land if my wife goes before me.

Her brothers and sister we trust 100% (I've known them for more than 30 years, never ask for a dime) but they may go early as well, the nieces and nephews we mostly trust, but you never know.

What I would like to know is, if the land goes into their name, the house is in mine with an Usufruct, what is to stop them from getting a loan on the land and not paying it? Is that possible?

Sorry If I hijacked the thread, but I think it is a pertinent question for the OP.

    Thanks.

  7. I read that the reason the EV sales are down so much in the EU and US is that the people who are going to buy an EV have already done so, and whatever sales are left are the stragglers to the EV market or the first owners getting new cars.

They won't be selling as much as when they first came out unless something totally different happens IE; 1000 mile battery, price drop, etc.

Asia still has alot of customers left, but eventually the same thing will happen.

I think the ORA is a really good looking vehicle, and the quality isn't bad for the price point.
