The regulations are very very clear...It is highly unlikely that any airline will carry you unless you have got a visa.
The regulations have been very clear for many years. Airlines and Bangkok passport control haven?t checked for return tickets though. It would be nice to here peoples recent experience rather than having the regulations read out as air tickets are cheaper to buy in Thailand in many cases and many people maybe show up on a one-way tkt.

Were you sending your passport to get a visa? I can't see how this could be legal.
Hi,
I was just commenting on Georges statement on the illegality of mailing passports and my experience with the British Embassy in Bangkok. I was actually applying for a visa in London but for a third country as they don?t have an embassy here.
I have never tried applying for a Thai visa this way. I don?t know if that is possible as the passport would not have an exit stamp from Thailand yet.
Cheers,

It is illegal to send your passport by post or courier.
A few months ago the British Embassy told me it was OK to DHL my pp out of Thailand. DHL also accepted the contents and cleared it though the embassy prior shipping. I had it returned DHL similarly.

Interesting differences of opinion from the administrators :-)

I'm back in Bkk. Lucky me!
PS: The guy at the immg. when reentering was a bit unpleased to see all these 30d's; he asked me where I'm staying. I had the feeling there was a decision going on in his mind: let I go him or not???
Welcome back!
Just curious .. how many back to back 30 day visas did you have?
Were you alone or with tour? Perhaps tour group safest way to go or perhaps it doesn't make a difference.

A 30 day visa is for tourism purposes only, whereas the long stayers are de facto residents and Thai authorities are seeking compliance with the regulations.
Not wishing to get off topic re illegal passport runs via third person. If so perhaps a new thread warranted.
However when do the legal 30 day tourists become de facto residents? Are there any authoritative guidelines one can follow on how many 30days are acceptable? I am not interested in breaking any regulations but as long as these runs are being promoted by travel agents and done in person by the passport holder it can be more convenient than other forms of visa acquisition.
In my own case I have been doing these runs more than once continuosly and remain a tourist.

But I believe that they will be real tuff about entering with 30 days stamps (no visa) repeatadly over a long period.
Why is repeating the 30day stamp a problem over long periods? There is nothing illegal with this is there? Some expats have been doing 30 day visa runs plus 10 day extensions for long periods already. Why should it suddenly be a problem?
Is this just your gut feeling or are there any facts to back it up?
Just curious as I may need to do a 30day visa run to Poipet soon.

I read a couple days back that there are around 16 million Thai cars with expired road tax so I am not expecting too many answers:(

If I remember correct before 1997, 1 USD = 12-15 THB.
Just to be pedantic here, the Thai baht has never appreciated much past 24THB/USD since 1984.

This is compulsary for all vehicles I understand and costs 860B per year for a small car.
What excactly is this kind of insurance an what is covered?

For Bangkok registered cars, can this be done only at the Dept Land Transport in Chatujak or are other places possible? What documents if any need to be produced, how long does it take and how much baht for a family car?
Thnx

But what about the visa extension from 500 to 1,900 baht ........... I cannot comprehend that at all a.........While the baht is down to 41.18 (my last ATM withdraw), the peso over 54 now so the USD may go further there. .....
Personally I wouldn't consider moving countries just because of a visa price hike. That is nothing compared to all the other expenses here not to mention the attachment one may have developed to the country. These visa prices haven't changed for many years and hopefully won't again for many years to come.
Also I don't understand the logic of the Thai and Philippine exchange rate comparisons. These are floating currencies on world markets and more pesos than baht to the dollar has no bearing on the cost of living in the Philippines versus Thailand.
Cheers
One way ticket to thailand

In my own case my work often takes me overseas to where there are no Thai embassies to apply for a visa. I have often turned up on a one way ticket and got a 30 day stamp on arrival without question.
