TikTok user documents drunk monk disrupting bus journey
farang9392 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Saw one the other day just openly have a cigarette whilst waiting for the song thaew, not the crime of the century and I understand it's not banned but they don't seem to be setting a great example for the impressionable youth or living a life of sacrifice as is claimed. I stopped the temple visits year ago and certainly won't catch me at 5am donating a basket of junk food. -
The future of masking -- will it ever end?

I guess it could be dependent on location, and your definition of most, but certainly in Bangkok more Thais than not do the 14hrs a day / 7 days a week mask practice -
Look to get some exterior shutters on the bedroom windows due to noise, and also security if we are away for weeks, the one company I found (top link in Google) is pushing motorized versions and just ignored my request for a quote for non-motorized, can't be doing with motor and all maint hassle and cost wow the cost, I basically want the same ones that 50% of high-rise apartments in Spain have, simple and effective, nothing posh, roller shutters with a stick inside to pull down and up albeit with some force sometimes... Does anyone have any companies that can quote and install such in Bangkok? Preferably much less than 10k a sqm

You're best just paying for services as you need them from people specializing in them, Thai Visa center etc, do you really have that many tasks that mandate a general personal assistant on call? I'm reminded of a guy that had his own personal chauffeur on call and paid him a monthly salary which was quite considerable along with the car costs, couldn't for the life of me understand why, you go to the pub every other night, you stay at the pub several hours, you go home, taxis came out around the launch of the automobile.. whats the point,

The future of masking -- will it ever end?

Some leap of logic there... At end of the day this isn't the reality though is it, most Thais mask from dawn to dusk without a consideration for the appropriateness, it's not like you see a Thai, look around and think to themselves "im outside now and its windy - ill remove this piece of cloth until I reach a crowded venue" -

Take everything with you, and both color pens, and plenty of change for copies, we forgot one document last time that we didnt think was neeed, and had to repeat the whole process again the next day. I'm just dreaming of the day the new government targets immigration, removing the corruption and giving them some incentive to actually do a decent job, and all the non-sense stops - blue pen today, black pen tomorrow, full duplex forms today, single side tomorrow, google maps no good, do a crappy hand drawn one, photos are not on gloss paper, your bank statement has the wrong address, i need your tm30 receipt from last time even though I have all that info on the computer -
Student Killed in Gas Explosion During Fire Drill

Yikes. I thought about picking up one of them in HomePro the other week, think it was just shy of a grand, but I decided otherwise as I remembered I still havent installed the smoke detectors I bought six months ago ???? Are they actually that dangerous in normal cases? -

Eventually the science will show how damaging dawn to dusk masking is for long term health, people refer to doctors wearing masks in surgery so it must be fine without understanding that they might only be in the operating room for 12 hours a week, the average Thai is masked 14hours a day, 7 days a week, outdoors, indoors, alone, any scenario where they aren't shoveling sugar in to their gobs.. -
The future of masking -- will it ever end?
farang9392 replied to ultramarine's topic in COVID-19 Coronavirus
A tiny tiny minority on any particular day have been wearing masks. Just like in Antarctica. Masking pre-covid was between 0.5% - 2%, yes masks existed before COVID thats about as far it goes, point is meaningless, masks were not a thing precovid in Thailand. We are in a strange world today where in certain parts of Bangkok 80% of natives are masked from dawn to dusk, strange sad world. -
Thailand boosts oversight of agriculture imports to tackle smuggling
farang9392 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I remember years ago getting a minibus from Jim's place in Penang to Hat Yai town center, the Thai guy did a big detour to pick up 5kg of garlic just before the penang bridge, claiming it was more than half the price of that in Thailand with a big smile. I would of thought a commodity like garlic across a small border would be broadly similar in price? does someone have a monopoly on it in thailand? surely tax cant be a significant factor? -
Marshall Stockwell 2 Bluetooth speaker
farang9392 replied to BritManToo's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
Considering they are 10k on Powerbuy and 10k on Banana IT, and upto 12k on some resellers, it's almost certainly a complete fake, not even a gray channel import or refurb, just cheap nasty rubbish, but you seem to have already known that going into the deal? As a fake it's probably worth ~400baht if that, or what a comparable no brand speaker costs, the specs listed won't be real so it would be difficult to compare.. -
Older, good-value condo buildings around Bangkok?
farang9392 replied to properjob's topic in Bangkok
70k/sqm in Ekamai, near the BTS and reasonably nice, I don't think you've got much chance. Ekamai doesn't have much unique to offer in my opinion though, except having an upmarket reputation, then again fancy coffee shops are everywhere nowadays. And as the others point out the traffic is a nightmare, forgetting nip through the back roads to a bakery, coffee shop, foodland thong lor, or to donki as Mercedes Benz school run traffic is everywhere. And at night watch the traffic back up to the beer house on the main ekamai rood. The people I've talked to that live there bought many many moons ago, and have made considerable gain in their property valuations, and more than happy with that, weather it represents good value now I doubt it. -

I hope so, Pita is young, most of the uniquely Thailand covid forever media fear non-sense is driven by the old unhealthy dinosaurs that are soon to be shown the door, never seen Pita masked at least not in recent publicity, although six silly clot shots at his young age makes you think if he really is that smart. And if he, or his third cousin's wife have shares in a defunct mask company then who knows, in that event we could still be talking about covid next decade whilst the rest of the world will need to look it up on wikipedia or learn about it in history lessons. -
Great question. Did you tell your insurer about the results or did they collect that automatically? Mine last time just sent out a survey with renewal, more like a disclaimer page to tick a few boxes I wonder what you have to declare though if you for example you move insurer or didnt get an official diagnosis - I was unexpectedly a bit rough one morning when visiting a doctor at major hospital for non blood pressure issue, however due a Chang beer fest the night before, the temperature at the time of day, and lack of sleep, plus I had a touch of the cold, my blood pressure was high on three readings. The doctor went on about it as the nurse had scribbled something down, pushing for further tests and even talking about statins to fix, I assured him it was usually normal, focus on the issue I came for and moved him along, but I'm pretty sure it's in the notes now as he made such a big deal of it. My BP been fine ever since but I wonder if an insurer could dig that up one day and refuse me based on some lame excuse of not ticking hypertension box etc. I don't think I was ever diagnosis officially but who knows what in the notes .

Thai children losing out on height due to too little milk
farang9392 replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
They shovel sugar into kids here like water, 4 year old kids with large bottles of coke I see often on the way to school, but tis just one flaw of parenting and schooling here. Combined with relentless masking in most schools, zero nutrition dinners, smartphone addiction, do not challenge the teacher, motorbike for their 11th-14th birthday, they have a pretty gloomy future especially in a globalized world. This doesn't apply to your darling Somchai - it's a different ball game when you sponsor at least a paid school, keep their diet in check, encourage critical thinking, bring out hobbies other than facebook and candy crush I don't think milk or lack of is going to be a significant contributor to a kids success when you look at the big horrible picture -
Hancock (the UK health minister) was a joke, handing out PPE contracts to his friends in the pub (quite literally the owner of a pub), but realistically what else could be done, the restrictions in the UK like most places in the world were far overreaching, illogical, and totally unnecessary, yielding almost zero benefits but having huge economical ramification that will take decades to recover from, and disrupting a generation of young one's learning. Lockdowns in any form were just such a bad idea. Still at least the UK is looking back on it as part of history, not a mask in sight, rather than time warp Thailand where 80% are still behaving like its 2021

They still mask like it's mandatory at many government schools, private schools now are mainly demasked though - possibly the seeding of critical thinking. I think when MFP take control of the health department revised guidelines that are more inline with the rest of the world will be announced and then hopefully the 24/7 mask madness ends. -
On a new property in Bangkok the buyer pays, or the builder includes it as a freebie - although the costs are real and as charged by the authorities - it was about 6k for water and 6k for electric including the meters if I remember correctly. Appointments were about a week out. Water guy dug down about 1metres to connect to the mains and up to meter and to main house inlet. Took about an hour. Electric was done in 15 minutes as the work rapid those guys. I just share these figures as a ballpark as your scenario is slightlty different, we are talking about 6 metres to the pole where they attached it to two of three phases, I expect you'll be adding on another few thousand for 20m

Thai Licence/International Driving Permit Insurance.
farang9392 replied to Jumbo1968's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
IDP is easy to get in the UK with your real license at post office, just don't confuse them with the story, you're going to Thailand for holiday, oh wow... that's so nice play dumb, they will look up the right one, and you'll pay 8 quid I think, done there and then. The crappy photos you get here at the little shops won't suffice, you need UK passport photos though, so get them before queuing or its requeue with all the coffin dodgers that chat forever, you'll know everything about magaret's cat, and derrick's hip replacement, and cost in Tesco before you leave.. Not sure about validity, getting the insurance won;t be a problem, but if it's technically valid I'm not sure. I think there a time limit on it before you must transition to thai license but does leaving reset it? every expert has a different opinion on this -
The old advice was keep trying, allocate a day, knock back try the next, exercise patience, take the paid add-ons if a prerequisite for an account, whilst preferring banks - specifically KBank and Bangkok Bank in high end expat friendly malls - Emquartier etc... However I know two people who recently followed exactly this and had zero success, they did get to spend several hours waiting in banks though. I think the agent route is the only viable one for tourist visa nowadays at least in Bangkok - do share if you have success otherwise though.
-
There's actual no major hurdles to e-gate entry and leaving for visa exempt tourists as well, Singapore - that third world place does it, only a few nationalities and non bio-metric encoded passports are referred.. People clear Singapore immigration in a few minutes. If Thailand wanted to keep the attitude of "why you stay and spend money long time" they can always do a referral to a dinosaur based on criteria
