  1. Have you tried wedging tissue between the rattling parts?

Or calling in a technician at your own expense to see whether something needs to be tightened up?

Or ensuring that the filters are clean, snug, and not loose?

In fact it has been serviced, the guy's my landlady sends just say "you need new one". I clean the filter, and compressor the 1st of every month. Even after they pull the cover off the compressor and check everything it still makes noise, it's better at first but in a short period of time it's full blown noise again.

  2. I live in a small one-bedroom apartment. My apartment came unfurnished, just a bed frame and mattress. I've made several improvements including buying new water heaters, for shower and my washing machine, as well as painting, wallpaper, new appliances etc. I had the cabinets in the kitchen refinished, and retiled the bathroom.

The wife and me love the place now except for the noise that the 16-year-old air-conditioner makes. It rattles, and makes awful noises that I can't describe. We cannot sleep, etc.

The landlady is notoriously cheap, and has told us that she will not replace it..."it still work, feel the cold air". She's happy to get the mark up on the electricity it uses.

What can I do to destroy the compressor and end the life of this thing. Would appreciate any serious suggestions.

    Thanks in advance,

    -O

  3. CBDK,

Thanks that was a fast reply. I have two friends that recently built houses in Thailand, both projects were a disaster. They were left with inferior dwellings starting from the lack of good design, to the substandard building materials, and shoddy craftsmanship. My friends were detached from the process. You don’t have to architect, or a carpenter, but you should try to learn as much as you can, and monitor what’s being done to build your own house.

Developers and homeowners usually seek out the easiest and most inexpensive solutions to maintain a structure, rather than focus on preserving the integrity of the original design.

I agree that the supporting drawings would be great to see in addition to the text you have provided, but it is a great read. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experiences.

  4. Good planning, good brief to contractor, good design and avoid making too many changes while building is some of the ingredience for a good house and to keep cost control.

    CBDK,

I like your project and the first hand information of your build. Will you share a copy of your brief to the contractor, product-sourcing contacts, as well as post some photo's of the interior rooms. I know this is asking a lot, but I feel there are many people that would benefit from your experiences.

    Thanks - O

  5. I want to buy a motorcycle, and am also interested in acquiring a truck if the price is right. Not really interested in buying a new 2007 model, used is OK. I have read that there are monthly auctions in Bangkok and Pattaya, but I cannot find any information. Does anyone know of repo auctions in Bangkok?I think it would be worth checking out.

    Thanks - O

  6. Hello,

I'm just about to get medical insurance for my wife and myself with Thai Health Insurance. The plans that they offer look good for coverage and value. I recently received an email from their broker stating that Thai Health will be raising their rates on January 18th.

Does anyone have any experience with this company?

  7. I buy 5 baht and 10 baht gold bars (99.99%) in China Town. The shop is located on the one-way main road, the road that goes through the market on both sides. The name of the shop is 24 karat, look for the huge 24 sign above the shop. This is the only place I know of in Bangkok.

Thanks for that. Are the gold bars from 24K shop labeled 99.99%?

    Yes.

  8. I've tried a search and cannot find an answer for my questions. I'm planning on visiting my family in San Francisco this coming Xmas with my Thai wife. I understand the procedure for filing the Non Immigrant Application, and the having the supporting documents together. I have a couple of questions.

Would it be wise to purchase are tickets now for our departure and return in December 2007. Would this help to confirm that my wife is coming back to Thailand?

Also what is the average time it takes to get the interview for the wife once you apply for one. And how long before you get a decision from the Embassy. I have heard different answers ranging from a matter of days to six months or more? Also I assume that you get the visa for the dates that you request right?

I'm retired and have live here for three years; I've been married for a year. Have known my wife for two years. I'm just getting started with this, and I've been doing a lot of reading. Would greatly appreciate any input from you guy's that have been through this.

    Many thanks,

  9. Hi,

There's one for sale, by the looks of the photo's it's in excellent condition. One of my concerns is the availabilty of parts. The miles are around 18,000km. Before I take a look I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about this model.

    Thanks - Orangutan

  10. I ship stuff to Chiang Mai all the time in cartons and the best deal I have found is Schenker Shipping Company. The bad news is that to get the best rate, you have to bring the stuff to their warehouse in Bangkok yourself.

    Ulysses G.

Do you have contact info for Schenker Shipping Company in Bangkok?

    Appreciate it,

  11. the one that bkkmei mentions as having eel tanks outside is also excellent too - not for Korean bbq but for its particular speciality - Mandop (Korean dumplings). This place seems to have a very Korean clientel too which I guess is a good indication of its authenticity. The nearby place that bkkmei mentions is also very good for korean bbq and your usual Korean staples - bibimpbab, seafood pancakes and the vast array of side dishes.

    Lucky

    Will give them a peek.

    Thanks - Orangutan

  12. I'm in the market to buy a 150 cc motorcycle, I see a lot of Honda CBR 150's around. Are they the best overall bikes around? I read a thread awhile ago saying that the quality of the Honda bikes has gone down, and that the better built bike was the Yamaha...is that a known fact? For that matter how are the Suzuki's. I do not want an automatic. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    -Orangutan
