  1. I was once told by Israeli in India that after Israeli military service the best and brightest go to visit and possibly emigrate to US. The next batch to Europe and SA mostly on holiday ... the working class and scrum go to India and Thailand to party and smoke weed. Thailand has had huge problems with this lot as long as I can remember. India as well. I'd had numerous run ins with them when I was backpacking many years ago. You never find this lot doing anything cultural they're always in little party ghettos.
  2. I don't disagree. It's very difficult to find good looking sandal type footwear especially in Thailand. Just look at the Thai young men and more or less dress like that. That is THE style here. They mostly wear long pants and that's proper in Asia and big city - but I've lived my life in short pants. Not going to change. Even when I wore long pants and a long sleeve shirt to work it was still not that uncomfortable going and coming from work even in the hot season. Many from UK and Northern Europe really suffer the heat and I've got that but you can still dress smartly. Some guys from the UK absolutely love the weather here. I understand that tourists are going to feel uncomfortable in heat. If you've not acclimated to the miserable weather here and it drives you to a singlet and flipflops in BKK you're in the wrong place. Slides not flipflops and dear God no hiking type, thick sandals (Keen, Merrill, especially Teva). If you purchase the right clothes they are not much warmer. A light collar shirt more comfortable than heavy t-shirt. I actually find shoes feel much better on the pavement than my slides. The real problem is that many of these guys have just like slobs are entire life. They feel totally uncomfortable in a collared shirt. I imagine they feel comfortable just wearing a nice shirt and a decent pair of shorts. Like it's "not them" . But I would urge this lot to try it. Just buy a decent collared shirt. Go to the regular watering hole and I guarantee you any female service staff that regularly takes care of you will remark that you look smart. 🌞 Agreed on the kids and tattoos, just because they think it's cool doesn't make it so. I was never a fan personally. They don't age well both in style and appearance. Can't say I'm wrong here. So many heavy inked tattoos as well. The tribal tattoos of yesterday are perfect examples of mistakes made Clean yourself up, take care of your skin, exercise, wear a smile (Thai women love smiles), give tips - watch your life change 👍👍👍
  3. I think it's best. Non profit corporation dedicated to privacy. Microsoft is an absolute abortion and gets more invasive by the month. I'm so close to ripping out W11 off my laptop. Edge and now with copilot freaking everywhere. Killing off Skype. Fitting a monster like Gates owns it.
  4. It's a sweet phone. I'm actually as excited as I can be about phones to inherit it ... in two years 😂 I just asked my wife the other day how long ago did I buy that phone for you?? Hoping it was 3 years not two. Too bad 1+ sold out. Using Color OS, basically another Oppo. I have my eye on Nothing phones. Pei is going to produce a flagship level phone sooner or later. If you've not heard of Nothing and want a great value phone look at the brand. My only concern is being able to actually buy them in Thailand. The entire Market is controlled by about three or four manufacturers now. The Chinese phones are quite good, but they run their own operating systems not android. I do not keep anything financial or confidential on my phone I still don't feel comfortable with these phones and know that they can and do feed data back to Chinese manufacturers and the government. I don't want to squeeze Trump into the conversation, but he's absolutely correct about his assessment of Thailand. Extremely uncompetitive on so many levels
  5. 1. It's not a quid pro quo. 2. You have control over what you wear and your appearance. I absolutely guarantee appearing and smelling clean and being better dressed will greatly change outcomes in interactions with people and especially Thais. Even paying full price at Uniqlo short and shirt around b1500. If you shop about paying 400b for a shirt, 400b shorts easy. Uniqlo just had sale on shorts 500b. Decent looking, proper shoes 1200-2500b. Trouble is they don't care. This also projects: I have no women in my life. In Bangkok no less the vast majority of western men are roaming around Sukhumvit in tired, black t-shirts and worse singlets. Cargo shorts complete the farang starter pack. One drunk about 60 I see regularly who is absolutely trash wears a tired black singlet, cargo shorts and flip flops. Of course, he's a broke drunk. Women just as bad. Always overweight (as many men), overexposed. They seem to think bc they're uncomfortable in the heat it's license to wear next to nothing. If they were hot no complaints, but they're gross. Black has been exhausted, it's not a cool color when everyone is wearing it. Sometimes I see idiots in Thailand usually UK wearing all black and long sleeve shirt. In they mind probably thinking they're cool like Johnny Cash. Look like a joker from the 80s. Then there are the tattoos 🙄 Improve your life immediately dress better, shave and wear shoes in BKK ffs
  6. But he's a brokie so dat never gonna happen.
  7. Yes, Las Vegas, Reno compared to some wholesome part of orange county. Realistic perspective 555 😂😂
  8. Spent a lot of time in India although mostly up north. Yeah, not clean people. Like Chinese there's 1B+ most of that is going to be dodgy characters. ..the educated, upper classes are ok. I quite like Jain people, super clean. Cleaner than the typical single farang I see about town I'm guessing Was down on soi 4 the other day drinking. Early evening ...the Indians were out and about. Most were better dressed than 90% of white guys. Fk you guys dress like shiiit
  9. I realize my posts here long but people just can't read. I stated twice the the size was 67sqm. The actual unit probably 57sqm and real usable 52.5. guessing
  10. Yes, add ons definitely slow things down. I'm die hard ff fanboy back to Mozilla Netscape
  11. Yes, that's you. Me too. Fast charging can have some real value especially when phone gets old and battery gets shonky. When you're on the road fast charging also helpful. Unrelated: wife's lastest 1+ 13 has Hasleblad camera. Fantastic. I tried to talk her out of me buying a new phone 😂 because comparing specs on GSMArena the 13 was negligible real world difference from her 7pro. She never pesters me for anything so I did her the upgrade. Her family was burning through phones misfortune. I'd given away all my old spare phones so I ponied up. I think phone requirements for cranky old men are minimal judging by this thread.
  12. I remember that era of moto phones and specs were great for price. Not easy to find in Thailand given the phone monopolies. Moto doesn't update, upgrade SW much if at all.
  13. I could probably get by with LCD screen, but phones so cheap and I gotta say portable internet, maps, chat is handy. I keep email on my phone as well but no longer necessary. Before my limit was 10k. Now, my plan is buy the wife flagship 1+ and inherit hers every four years. I'm using her 7pro now. Great phone. The biggest want I have in a phone is ability to see it well in bright sunlight.
  14. Well stated. Thank you very much. Appreciated.
  15. The size is 67sqm including balcony* Price sqm is 29.850b not 33k
  16. Thanks all. It's 33k sqm, nothing on dd property is that cheap even old slummy buildings. Large-ish two bedrooms. Low rise, two lifts, small building, super quiet, massive balcony, central BKK, near MRT, lots of food. Safe. We really like the area. Are you experienced in construction, building and concrete or like myself simply understand the inherent problems of water damage and giving thumbs down? If the price is agreed to the first thing I'm doing is getting some sort of engineer to have a look at the issue. Anything on the exterior I will insist that the condo have repaired before I pay for the unit. Yes, die. I'm a healthy 64 and wife 47. The place is perfect for our needs. I can't, won't do the work (maybe the flooring). Needs custom built in cabinets, shelves. Thailand labor cheap. As I said before - I deleted the pictures because they didn't accept the offer. Why would I bother to keep the pictures if the deal was never going to happen? It's no big deal we just get the admin to open the place back up again this weekend 🙄 Yes, have the money to renovate, but I don't want to throw good money after bad. Don't want to worry about leaks, damage rest of my life. I'd like an engineer and I just builder to evaluate it. I trust a farang tradesman but not a general Thai builder to evaluate the leak issue. By thinking was there are seemingly boatloads of engineers scurrying about Bangkok to evaluate earthquake damage. Someone like that. 2M @ 67sqm some wasted space from load bearing beams. Nice balcony area, not wide but long, views. I think this condo size excludes balcony. It's not top floor but has penthouse vibe. The apparent damage by sight: * 1.5m above sliding door and ceiling (balcony above) * 2+m running along the bottom of sliding door and possibly under the floor. I'm hoping someone might provide positive feedback and estimate. I understand the upper leak might be serious as it involves the roof/balcony. Exterior... Condo needs to fix and pay. The bottom very well could be only from neglect. The drain outside is plugged and water standing on balcony. The condo empty for years. Property group bought on spec, can't sell it, gave up, got lost in shuffle I presume.
  17. I'll follow up if I get with many more details, but first the deal breaker. I'm sorry I don't have photos as I had deleted them when they turned down our ridiculously low offer. They came back today and essentially agreed to it. My wife has a video and some pictures but none of them truly show the nature of the damage. We need to go back into the unit and get some good pictures** We are currently living in this building, two floors below as a matter of fact Property sold as is... We have the opportunity to buy a condo in a building about 15 years old, central BKK, great location. Basic building, two tiny lifts, a tiny pool of absolutely no consequence and no fitness. Parking is tight but we don't own a car and never will. Our intention is to fix the place up and live in it basically until we both pass. The main issue is that is has water damage. The admin at the condo has informed us the bldg is responsible to repair the exterior of the building if need be. 1. One bedroom shows signs of water damage. The admin stated this was repaired (apparently from outside). It would be good to know the cause as it might be related to the next point. 2. The main area that has water damage is the cement surrounding front area adjacent the open balcony. A. Top of slider appears to have water that has somehow made it down from the balcony above. Directly above is an open balcony. There might be drainage issues, tile cracked?? If this is structural design issue even if repaired presumably the problem could return correct? My expectation is that the entire sliding door will need to be removed cement chipped out of both the top and the bottom to expose all the damage and then fully repaired. 3. The bottom has perhaps a similar problem. The condo has basically been sitting abandoned for years. They have allowed the drain to clog it has filled the balcony with standing water. This has damaged the bottom part of the wall in which the door sits upon. This looks like it has been repaired before in fact it has. That is a warning to me. While the damage is recurring it's very possible that it's occurred because of neglect. If someone was living in the condo they would have unplugged the drain or had someone deal with a particular issue. Or it can be structural... 3. The final water issue is far less serious. There is water that appears to be dripping down from the roof and running down the building. This has ruined the seal on the windows on that side. This looks like the water just needs to be redirected up on the roof and moved away from the building. I'm uncertain weather the window which is in very good condition otherwise can have the seal around it repaired. >> My question is should we buy this condo and renovate? It's a great opportunity as it's an absolute bargain. >> What might it cost to have an engineer come out and have a look at this situation and evaluate this for us? Would anyone know of a person they could recommend? There was a guy through here perhaps from the insurance company doing earthquake evaluation. It's possible we might be able to get hold of them. Your thoughts there? Finally, could anyone ballpark an estimate for the sliding window upper and lower to be repaired and done correctly? that would mean taking out the sliding window, blasting out the cement repairing top and bottom and maybe even a brand new sliding door because why not? If the one area in bedroom that has shown prior damage is dry is it worth busting out the wall and inspecting it or just let sleeping dogs lie? It's dry while the other area is wet so I can presume if the same kind of situation occurred that the area has been repaired and is holding. As a side note we would also like to bust out that damaged area anyway and put in a window as the wall is not load bearing. Any thoughts about that? Super finally, the admin seemed amenable to us putting up an awning to keep out sun and rain. We really want it. Please only sensible replies either pro or con. I've been in Asia for 35 years, living in Thailand for better part of 20, married for 15. I know all of the negative implications about owning condos and this might be a perfect example - but it's also a once once in a lifetime buy at under 33k per sqm. Free tax, transfer, yellow book+ 1 year condo fees. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
  18. So stupid. Trannies always need to make a point and the point is all about me. Immigration doesn't care about your sexual proclivities. They simply want to make sure that the person coming in or out of the country is the same person that's presenting the passport and there is no criminal issues surrounding them. Seems to me that a far wiser approach would be to pull one's hair back and not apply a bunch of makeup the day you're traveling. Perhaps use some binder to flatten your chest and wear a loose fitting shirt. Noooooo.... Probably wore a fancy cocktail party dress and sparkly 6" high heels with a diamond encrusted tiara. LOOK AT ME!!
  19. When the rains / floods come to main Pattaya beach the sand washes into the sea.
  20. My temple visiting days are over, but some modern Thai temples are a bit interesting. Thai ruins are a bore. Better to go to Myanmar, Cambodia. Not even close.
  21. Anywhere that is not... Bangkok Pattaya Andaman islands
  22. Thai youth have few opportunities certainly nothing that *education* has given them. Many become indebted early in life. Thai family can be burdensome. It often takes years for Arts students graduating from even the top three universities to land decent jobs. By decent jobs I mean jobs in the big mango starting at 14k.
  23. 92-96 Good times, but I'd heard some of the guys died of HIV. Thailand has no social *safety network* even most "friends" will let you off yourself in slow motion. Phnom Penh REALLY has no net. Between the cheap alcohol, drugs and girls ...
  24. I stopped reading at Pristine beaches I guess the author means the bay in which raw sewage runs into and the beach that annually melts into the sea.
  25. I don't always opt for toll roads. Usually not. They are often not any faster - I've sat in traffic jams on toll roads countless times. When I go to Sai Tai Mai I often leave hours and hours earlier than the bus departure in anticipation of traffic I'm in absolutely no hurry to get there. So, she's not a complete nitwit. There are reasons You also have the time it takes to detour to and from the toll road as well as the fare. Unnerving when driver wants to take toll road at totally off peak travel times as well. I feel sorry for the grab drivers. All delivery drivers, motorcycle food delivery drivers. They bought a car and now running it into the ground. Making scant money. Makes no sense.
