  1. Can anyone advise whether I can get 95RON petrol in Samui?

I've heard conflicting reports that 95RON petrol is no longer being sold in Thailand. (Only 95 Gasohol is available)

    Appreciate if someone can confirm.

If its available, is it by any chance called "Alpha-X 95" rather than "Gasohol 95"?

    Thanks for the assistance.

BTW, what the price of it? (I saw in PTT webby it was 21.39 bahts/ltr) Is this accurate?

This is a general no. There was a place between Nathon and Maenam that was still selling it (the station with a ? for a sign) but none of the other stations sell it. Unless someone knows better, then I'd say it's not available

P.s. this thread is two and a half years old. The op has since settled down, had kids and is looking forward to his retirement

  2. There is sand on the roads, there always will be sand on the roads. It's a tropical island. The only way to solve the problem is to build a raised road, similar to many in Suratthani. Unless that is done, which will probably not happen, this will be a regular occurance. Maybe if/when Samui keeps it's own income, and it doesn't all disappear in backhanders, there may be money to employ a regular cleaning crew.

The other problem is lack of riding skills. You do not lean a bike over on sand. It's possible to 'square off' virtually any bend. I do it all the time at the moment, yet I continually see people leaning the bike over on sand. The result is inevitable.

It would help if this information was included in the driving test. Unfortunately many Thai people have never taken a test. If you meet the lady again, maybe you could ask her where the fault lay. If she accepts responsibility, then there's hope for her learning. I hope she recovers well from her injuries, but unless she accepts some responsibilities it could happen again, especially after a few drinks.

Have also seen two accidents on sand near my home. I, and most locals, know it's there and ride accordingly. The second guy who crashed was so paralytic I at first wondered if he'd hit his head. Couldn't stand straight and couldn't string a sentence together. He finally mounted his bike, which was losing oil at this stage, and shot off at extreme speed with the side stand down. There is no way he made it home without crashing again. This was at about 7pm

  3. My memory is a tad hazy now, but believe the R1 didn't have a black frame until the '02 model. Looks like the earlier model frame which has been painted. The swingarm and subframe have obviously been re-painted, badly. The tank, bodywork and clutch cover are all newly painted. Wouldn't touch it without a long and careful check

  4. I can't see why this couldn't be done. I don't know the Phantom, but it should be possible to make a flat plate to bolt the footpegs to which will move them forwards 2 or 3 inches. Then you will need to have the linkage for the gear chance re-made longer. The rear brake hydraulics should be easier. The saet unit may need a spot of welding to raise the overall height and a new seat fabricated. Basically it all sounds possible, you just need to find a competant engineer and to be sure enough of what need to be done, and exactly how to do it, and then watch him like a hawk as he does it

  5. If I'd never ridden a bike before I would be happier buying a new bike which I knew worked exactly as it should. I would then make sure sure I had somewhere quiet to practice first. Remember, you didn't get in a car on your own the first time and drive safely. Passing your test, which I beleiev you will have to do, is not a problem once you are competant. Personally I would recommend one of the automatics as a first bike

  6. No idea really, but 2000baht doesn't sound unreasonable. I may be a tad cynical here, but can it be renovated/do they specialize in these shocks/is it an aftermarket shock/are these the suppliers you bought it from. Part of me suspects they may just give it a clean and charge you 2000 baht. Can you buy a new shock for it?

  7. Could always ask this guy if he has any spare notes

A Pittsburgh conman was caught out in an ambitious scam - when he asked for change for a million dollar note.

The man presented the note at a supermarket and demanded change.

But the cashier at the Giant Eagle Store refused and alerted the manager, who confiscated the fake note.

At this point the would-be millionaire crook flew into a rage.

  8. And what's with all the unhelmeted sikhs?

Because of the inability to fit a helmet over a turban, sikhs are excempt from the need to wear a helmet in the uk. Presume the law must be the same for thailand

  9. Was told numerous times to come back in an hour to be able to buy a ticket. Thais who arrived after were given tickets, hence the vehicle problems. I'd lean against a tree and then witness many thais who'd arrived after getting frustrated at the single car which wasn't moving. I put this down to racism as being the only farang there, every time, and being the only car not joining the ferry

  10. Suzuki are offering big discounts on this "Click" styled bike until the end of the year, which even has a "two spring" rear suspension for the large Farang bum. Anybody any experience of them? The major negative point I have seen are the brakes, which are "bicycle style" front and rear handlebar mounted.

It's a bike, does what it's supposed to. You'll get used to not trying to pull the clutch in. Personally I hate the linked brake version. If I pull the rear brake lever then I want just the rear brake to work. If I'd wanted the front brake as well then I'd pull the front brake lever!

Sorry, just realised you were asking 'bout the suzuki, not the click. Got a bit side-tracked by my dog losing a fight with a cat (serves him right). Haven't a clue with the suzuki

  11. Hi

Dont know what shop you went to but they are still laughing, i bought 20" chrome wheels with 275/50 Bridgestone tires for 60.000

I presume she went to a shop on Samui. When the time comes to buy tyres myself I will probably fit it in with my visa run to Malaysia rather than bother trying to deal with the businesses on the island. Mind you, if the op has enough money to change the wheels and tyres 'cause she wants a different look, then up to her
