  1. I have a non-O one year multiple entry due to expire in the end of May. I just got a new passport and about to do a visa run in Myanmar by land to reset a fresh 90-day entry. Is it correct to assume that I need to bring both passports to the border crossing (the cancelled old passport with the still valid visa and the new fresh passport to get a new entry stamp) to have a smooth crossing? And this procedure is to be repeated until the expiration of the visa in the old passport?

  2. I am due to reset a 90 day entry on a non O multiple entry visa soon. Previous trip I went to ranong which was smooth but would like to change scenery this time. Is the Phu Nam Ron in Kanchanaburi also smooth? I am travelling from Hua hin.

By the way is there a link or list with all Thai border crossings listed? Could not find anything like this here

I don't know if this thread is still active, but I'm in the same situation.

If you have been legally employed and have a Thai social security number (13 digits) then you'll be in the system. Go here to check (it's in Thai and English - select on the top line).
https://www.sso.go.th/wpr/ Use your social security number as your user name and choose your own password.

Once all sorted and registered, the left-hand icon of the symbols on the top line reads 'insured person'. Click on that and scroll down to the very bottom line - 'calculation of old age allowance'. There you find a detailed breakdown of all info, including your and your employer's contributions.

If you have less than 15 years contributions you can only take a lump sum, the choice of a monthly income doesn't apply.

Hope that helps (thanks to Kasper for putting me on to this!)

How can you find if you have a Thai social security number? Is it marked in the work permit or if not then where?

You need a termination letter from your employer or immigration at the Nong Khai crossing may not allow you to leave the country without it, The date on the letter would have to be on or after the date you leave the country.

Immigration is not interested in the work permit being cancelled.

If you use the employer termination letter to cancel your extension in immigration in chaeng wattana (which i believe is the correct way of doing the cancelation rather than leaving without canceling the extension at immigration first) do you still need to have an employer termination letter in the border crossings of nong khai or mukdahan?

  5. I was at the Ministry of Labor today and attempted to cancel my work permit. I told them I was leaving on a Sunday night bus to Mukdahan and would exit Thailand Monday morning. They gave me 2 options: 1: cancel work permit today and immediately be technically on overstay or 2: leave country, get new Visa and re-enter. Then I can come and cancel work permit to clean up the record.

They absolutely refused to post date my cancellation until Monday. They said they will only cancel it the day you are there, putting you on overstay if you cannot leave the country immediately (that day). Absurd policies.

Canceling your work permit does not automatically cancel your extension of stay. Nobody notifies immigration when your work permit is canceled.

Without having a termination letter from your employer you may not be allowed to depart the country at Mukdahan.

Exited at Mukdahan without termination letter from employer. No issues. No questions.

Did you end up canceling the work permit in the end or did you just exit at mukdahan without canceling extension & work permit and without having a termination letter?
  6. The most important thing you will need from the school is a letter stating your last day of work. You can cancel the work permit yourself.

Is you job going to in the same province where you teaching now? If not it will complicate changing to a new employer.

The fact that you have been extending a non-o visa entry changes nothing. What was the non-o based upon? If married to a Thai that could make things a little easier.

Your new employer would have to apply for work permit for you and obtain a work permit application letter.

Then you could go to immigration with the letter from the school on before your last date of work to have your current extension cancelled. As soon as that is done you would apply for new extension with supporting documents from your new employer and the work permit approval letter.

After the extension is done you would cancel your work permit and the new one could be issued.

What is needed to get the non-b visa will depend upon where you apply for it. As an example Vientiane requirements can be found here. http://vientiane.thaiembassy.org/upload/pdf/Visa/Non-B%20business.pdf

What if they .won't provide the letter?

The job will be in a different province

It was based on marriage. I got divorced years ago and the school was still able to extend. I had to provide the divorce certificate each year.

Interesting. I wonder if the stars would align to make this happen!?

    Thank you for the link

Without a letter your only choice would be to go out for a new visa or a visa exempt entry.

A different province would mean dealing with 2 work permit offices and 2 immigration offices unless your current office covered both provinces.

Not being being now will not help.

It is possible but not always easy.

Go out for new visa or visa exempt but not nong khai or mukdahan right? They wont stop him there if he has no termination letter?
  7. Hi,

So, as soon as his previous school cancels his work permit does he get 7 days to exit the country?

    Thanks

There is no 7 days. A 7 day extension can be applied for, the 1900 baht fee paid and then he would be given 7 days to leave the country at immigration with a termination letter stating the last date of his employment after the extension is canceled.
If you apply for the 7 day extension on the last day both work permit and extension of stay expire do you still need a termination letter?

Yes you need a termination letter. Without it they will not know when you actually stopped working.

If you have a termination letter you can save the cost of the extension by going to immigration a few days before the date on it and they will post date the cancellation to that date.

But if your work permit and extension of stay expire naturally together for example on june 30 and the termination letter shows as june 30 as the last working day and say you go a few days before what exactly immigration is going to stamp as last day? The same date that is already in the passport? Is there such a thing as a cancelation stamp?

  9. ubonjoe - is it legal to fail to cancel your extension? Could you wait until convenient, and then exit by air (to Penang, say) to get an SETV?

There is no law that says it is illegal. Many people just fly out and back with a valid extension to cancel it.

The work permit can be canceled after the extension is canceled.

The best and most correct way is to the way I wrote earlier.

The border crossings that check for valid extensions based upon working are doing it to catch people that stopped working long before they are trying to leave the country and cannot get a termination letter from an angry ex employer or the employer will only date it to the date they stopped working (thus an overstay).

While i am not in this case you describe i would prefer not getting my employer involved

In this case is it possible to simply wait till the last day that both extension and work permit expire, apply for the 7 day extension on that day and subsequently leave for laos for a non o visa during those days?

    1) Could immigration deny those 7 days?

    2) Can mukdahan or nong khai immigration stop you from leaving if you try to exit thailand during those 7 days?

I am thinking the answer is no and no but would appreciate a confirmation thank you

  10. from yesterday 8 april at all thailand post office you must show your passport or id card to even mail an envelope???? (this data is KEPT on the thailand post data base and used for god knows what else in the future) this country is insane ........BUY SOME SNIFFER DOGS like the rest of the worldfacepalm.gif

Began a few months ago and any parcel 2 kilograms and over require the

foreigner to show his/her Passport and Thai's need to show their ID's. And

yes, the staff told me they check for contraband.

Might be a good idea to get the facts straight before posting smile.png

Yes ID began a few months ago for anything over 2kgs

But now since april 8, ID is required for ALL parcels regardless of weight and even oversized envelopes

So check your facts again :)

Interesting, wonder how does checks gonna work with the mail boxes...

You cannot get a po box with no ID
  12. For a sole proprietorship like a shop or restaurant, you just register with the Revenue Dept and also with the District Office, if you need licences to sell tobacco and alcohol. You can register with a brand name or just under the name of the individual.

Thats interesting. I was thinking that sole proprietorship set up required registration under the persons name but it seems its more flexible than that. Can you register under a name that sounds like a company for example "vintagemania" or similar and if yes can you open a business bank account under this name using the sole proprietorship set up?

  13. Thanks all for the feedback. It seems I do have some options here.

A few more questions, though (for now): If the employer does NOT send an termination letter to me, where do I stand than? Both, the VISA & Work Permit will expire beginning next months, first WP and a day later my 1 year extention permit.

Can I go (latest) on the last day of my permit to stay in Thailand to extend it in Bangkok for another 60 days? Or is the permit to stay already expired when the WP epires a day before? Do I need to change my type of VISA for the new period (of 60 days) or can I still go along with my current non-B?

Finally, as I remember, the company must employ me for another 30 days (in any way; as I'm being employed since a long time) latest after the WP expires? Usually, that goes along with the termination letter. But what if the company just do not renew my WP? And don't sent a letter? I know, it is a little bit complicated, but maybe someone has some ideas here too. Thanks thinking about it.

When your work permit expires, your visa expires as well. Youll need a cancellation letter from your employer, otherwise you could easily be on an overstay without even knowing it.

Your type of visa cant be a Non-B because youre not employed anymore, youll have to apply for a Non-O, based on your marriage.

No idea if the company must employ you for another 30 days, is it possible that youll just receive a one-month salary? I dont think that your company will renew your work permit, you need the termination letter from your employer to cancel your extension of stay and to cancel your work permit.

If you dont do that and try to leave the country to lets say apply for a Non-O in Sawannakhet, they might (will) send you back to do both cancellations first.

    Best of luck.

If you are employed for many years,a company in Thailand can't just close the doors. Depending on the past employment period, they have give you a warning, that is max 30 days after having sent the termination letter. In Europe it is perhaps up to 6 months (for both sides) but in Thailand, neverthelss, it is max 30 days. That said, based on my expiration dates of WP & Stay in Thailand, it is almost the same day. But you have right, if the WP expires, so likely (sure) the permit to stay in Thailand, too. But not sure why a termination letter is still required IF both dates have practically expired the same day and likely already when having entered LAOS.

I am also trying to make any sense out of this but really it doesnt...so if you leave the country on the last day your permit expires they might not let you out if you have no termination letter from employer..if you wait one more day you are on overstay...so what are you supposed to do if your employer does not cooperate or if simply you do not want to get the employer involved?
