  1. Here's a link with a site explaining who these boat people are and why they continue to make the dangerous journey to Thailand.Rohingya People Sea Gypsies

Kaladanpress also has very authentic articles, sometimes the Norwegian Democratic Voice of Burma. However, the Rohingya are not Sea gypsies. They are foremost farmers (and very good ones), as well as traders. They are the most oppressed minority in Burma. They used to have citizenship before. In the 80s a new law was introduced and all ethnic minorities in the country had to reapply. All were granted citizenship. Except the Rohingyas. If you know the Burmese military or the Nasaka you know what THAT means.

I really hope that their recent plight is not as easily forgotten as their exodus into Bangladesh more than 15 years ago, when they made world headlines for a few days.

  2. There must be some VERY INTERESTING stuff going on behind the scenes. How I would like to play mouse! What is manifest in the actions of all involved is not even half of the story, you can be sure about that.

There is indeed....for a better understanding of what/why this is happening you might read this thread I have posted several explanations.

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Pad-Tactics-...rt-t226517.html

    (edit to add thread)

Aehm, I really mean BEHIND the scenes. Who secretly meets whom, who phones whom, who pulls what strings, makes what promises etc. Things nobody (unless a complete insider) could know. And I am also sure not even the inside-insiders know half of what is going on. The other scenario would be we have complete anarchy with everybody REacting...

  3. Ask around locally. Those guys tend to be highly specialized. Some do charms only (sanee), some do predictions, some ward off black magic affecting you, some act as medium, some read palms, some read cards ... Pick any old lady, chat her up and try to steer the subject to magic. Once you got one, ask him/her about your past first, and then decide whether he/she is a swindler.

  4. Has there ever been a Thai government that wasn't corrupt?

I don't remember the PAD protesting against the corrupt governments that were run by their sponsors. :o

Taking the question further: are there any calculations on what a corrupt government costs the country? Let's say over a period of 1 year? Compare to what the country loses in 1 week of airport closure?

  5. Hi,

sorry if there were thoughts to this topic in some of the threads, but I would like to ask where is the youth? It USED to be the case that political activism came from the universities. The students often were the first to demonstrate. But now it seems from the pictures one sees that it is another generation... Of course, the reasons for this have been discussed and are quite well known. Still, I am interested to know what is the position of Thailand's young in all this mess? Too busy with Ragnarok?

    Cheers

  6. Decent Filipino food=oxymoron

Right you are. When I lived in Thailand I took good food for granted. Big mistake. I have, however, to say that in the provinces there is nice food. They even use spices and herbs there :o . But in Manila? Forget it. Fortunately we are all good cooks. If anybody'd ask me about Filipino food my first reaction would be: shovel fatty meat and some veggies in a pan and fry with vinegar and sugar.

  7. But i am very serious about every individual i meet and i want to

    make the best of it.

You answer your own question. Everyone is an individual. Even in real life you meet dozens of people without being able to relate to them. And then it happens. Just be patient. A word of caution on chat rooms: There are a lot of married guys there.

  8. Hi,

I don't know about the island resorts, but you could try the Samroiyot area. There are many that you might like. The beach is not superwhite and the sea is not suitable to snorkle, but it is quiet, you get very fresh seafood, the locals run village-based eco-tourism (boats to the nearby island). You can also kajak around. And if the weather is bad you get yourself a bicycle and go bird-watching. There is a splendid landscape (karst and lotus fields).

  9. This classic should be here:

A farmer walked into an attorney’s office wanting to file for a divorce. The attorney asked, “May I help you?”

The farmer said, “Yea, I want to get one of those dayvorces.”

The attorney said, “Well do you have any grounds?”

The farmer said, “Yea, I got about 140 acres.” The attorney said, “No, you don’t understand, do you have a case?”

The farmer said, “No, I don’t have a Case, but I have a John Deere.”

The attorney said, “No you don’t understand, I mean do you have a grudge?”

The farmer said, “Yea I got a grudge, that’s where I park my John Deere.”

The attorney said, “No sir, I mean do you have a suit?”

The farmer said, “Yes sir, I got a suit. I wear it to church on Sundays.”

The exasperated attorney said, “Well sir, does your wife beat you up or anything?”

The farmer said, “No sir, we both get up about 4:30.”

Finally, the attorney says, “Okay, let me put it this way. WHY DO YOU WANT A DIVORCE?”

And the farmer says, “Well, I can never have a meaningful conversation with her.”

  10. Yeah, seems like your husband is right. Just bring whatever you feel comfortable in. I guess in November you'd have to wear black for a few days anyway. I did not follow the dress code (except mourning periods) and never had any problems. Of course it is different if you work for the government. Just enjoy Thailand and be who you are. People really appreciate that more than pretending...

  11. Hi everyone,

    I have been adopted by a cat I don't like!!!! :o

He (a big fat red tomcat) comes to sleep on my porch and also does his stinky business there. As my "porch" is very small it stinks to heaven of course. What can I do to keep him from doing that or, better still, to stop adopting me?

And no, I never fed him. And yes, I have a grumpy dog. He does not care.

  12. Your experience sounds strange to me. All my teachers emphasised that in Buddhism a person with knowledge shares it only to someone if that person is ready. So to me it makes no sense to hint something and then not give you an explanation.

  13. I believe there are SOME people out there versed in both black and white variations. However, they don't advertise themselves and nobody goes to them unless absolutely necessary. Have seen strange things and have seen strange things happening to me; which basically left me the choice to declare myself insane or .... that there really are things that cannot be, should not be. Preferred the latter :o

Somebody mentioned the vodoo dolls. Yes, I have participated in a ceremony involving them. AND MONKS!

On Epilepsy, I recommend the OP to read the book "The spirit catches you and you fall down". I admit it has a very uninspiring title, but is absolutely fascinating to read.
