  1. Oh, you hit a nerve: good quality toys and reasonably priced? You must be extremely lucky to get them. Sometimes I DID get lucky in OTOP shops. Or try garage sales... :o

  2. Listen to your body. If you feel revulsion, or if you get breathing troubles once he is around you know for sure you should leave.

If your heart beats faster with joy when you hear him coming home then sit it out.

    Take care

    s.

  3. I like Filas, but must admit I know only two. They look scary and are biiiiiiig, but the are adorable and sweet. Only thing: they slobber a bit... Also, if you have kids I can imagine some problems as long as the pup is still not fully grown and up to much mischief. She will surely scare the "visitors" off your farm, both by her size and the deep bark. I wish I had enough space for one.....

  4. If you have transportation you could go from Nongkhai to Sangkhom district. Lots of scenery, good roads, waterfalls (well, maybe there is not much water right now); generally one can spend more than one full day exploring that direction. Or go to the other side, towards Sakon Nakorn - there you have nice environment also. We went there frequently, just stopped wherever we liked it.

  5. My wife is convinced that a neighbour of ours was bewitched into falling in love. Apparently involves menstrual blood being place in food.

I hear that all over. Not only in Thailand and not only Isaan. However, if it is the case, it should wear off after the wife has given birth (so the tale goes). Watch it and you'll know.

  6. I've also always wondered... you are charged for being 1 kilogram overweight with your 21 kilo luggage on the plane, but you're only 58 kilograms, so your total weight is 79 kilograms using the plane's fuel.

Whereas an obese person weighing 130 kilograms with luggage within the 20kg limit is using up 150 kg which is almost double your total weight using the plane's fuel. Yet YOU have to pay a fine for being "overweight" and he doesn't.

Just wondering, is this fair? :o

Same here. I am quite small and lightweight. Whenever I have excess luggage I try to convince the check-in staff using the same arguments as you. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.

  7. Like take Ancient City for example, it's privately owned, and if a non Thai goes there its 300baht, but for Thai 100 baht, even if she pulls up in a 4 million baht BMW its still only 100 baht.

Not my experience. I (farang) was asked to go to the queue for Farangs. When the personnel noticed us talking in flawless Thai they waved us over to the Thai queue. We paid the same as Thais. Have been there several times with visitors of mine and it happened every time.

I am happy that learning the language is so much appreciated. In my country people just expect everyone to speak the native language. No recognition whatsoever... If foreigners have a slight accent they are ridiculed mercilessly.

  8. Has anyone else done it?

    any helpful suggestions gratefully received.

    David

Yes, I have done it. Built a house on it and had a garden. However, you need to allow some time for the soil to settle. Never build immediately after filling the rice field in. BTW, we filled in with a mixture of sand and Mekong clay.

  9. Is the dog a Miniature Pincher (Min Pin) if so they are great dogs, I have 3 in bed with me now as I work on internet, easy to house train, very loving, ears will go up to point as they get older. Someone take her/him or bring her to Pattaya and I will.

No chance for ears to go up. It's a dachshound.

  10. I had the "Khi Nok" discussion with friends in Laos. Their version: the word first came up when most of the Farangs (human) seen by the locals were military. Their camouflage cloths looked like, well, full of Khi Nok. I believed it at that time and it sounds plausible.

  11. Giving "the look"? Naaaaa. I think Thai-Western partnerships are constructed in a way that none of the onlooker nationals gets jealous. (that's a generalization of course) Western men of MOST mixed couples I see in the streets are not my type (and age group). (And Thai men tell me this is true of their feelings regarding the Farang wives.)

Also, it could be you perceive something that is not there.

Gay couples are often very attractive people. So while not giving them "the look" I might be found guilty of staring...

For your info: when I walked with my foreign then-husband in my home country, people - especially men - would spit at me or call me a whore.

  12. Why take her to a monk? I would not do that. Have several troubled friends and took them to the Mae Chi. That worked really well. Talks with the Mae Chi had a therapeutic effect and every one of my friend acknowledged that. They had been to see monks before, but told me that did not help. What they got was theoretical advice and some explanations or some stories of the life of Buddha. What they got with the Mae Chi is personal contacts, a spiritually enhanced woman they could tell about their private feelings and particular situations, they got courage and a quiet confidence. A Thai woman will not talk openly to a monk.

The problem for you will be to find a Mae Chi. I also know some very wise Upashikas, but they are all in Thailand :-(.
