  1. Never trust a consultant! :o

If they know so much the'd be a business leader, wouldn't they? - To busy to help out here.

    Never trust a consultant! :D

Would a good one be earing small money here (5,000 baht per day?) instead of decent money back home (500 pounds + per day)? - I think not.

    Never trust a consultant! :D

A good retired consultant living here? - Doubtful, as they are retired and want to relax.

Never trust a (so called) "business" consultant. NEVER!

I've met a few here, ohhh, they make my blood boil.

  2. The buddhism here is certainly very different from when I spent a few years in Mongolia and got to know some of the Tibetan and Mongolian monks.

I've never met a Thai (including some very educated and intelligent monks) that knows why all the Buddha images depict him with long ear lobes, my thought on this is because the Thais give money mainly because they believe they will receive a greater ammount back (either financially or "luck"). Thus the idea of wealth and getting is a positive thing here - thus why shouldn't the temples show it off.

This is not inline with what I saw in Mongolia, but then again this is amazing Thailand and it's a different type of Buddhism.

But I have no thoughts on Buddhism generally here as I don't know and the Thais don't like opinions that disagree with their way of doing things, so I don't have any.

My wife goes to one of the big famous temples regularly and I don't see a positive effect on her and I choose not to go with her, as I get nothing from it (emotionally, kharma, I don't know what, but I don't). When I lived in Mongolia I did spend some time at the temples and I thought that I benefitted from it.

    Just my ignorant thoughts.... :o

  3. I wish all TV members will have a very, very Merry Christmas and that 2007 will be their collective best year ever!

    Corrupt that!!

....And you'll be burdened with paying for all the lao khaos at the TV pissup. :D

I wish I could become a TV moderator...

Your wish is granted, but there's a sudden outbreak of tourrets syndrome in the Pattaya members section (not too hard to believe).

I wish for a smooth, traffic free ride to the new airport. :o

  4. I read this news report about one week ago....

I thought 'here we go again'; but it seems the two suspects left their ID so......

It could be worse. He could be dead.

    TOP TIP

Don't accept food or drink from unknown 'pelvic affiliates' in your hotel room prior to 'rumpy-pumpy'.

    :o

    What's rumpy-pumpy? Is it similar to rumpus-pumpus? :D

If I was to steal money, and I wouldn't, but if I did, then I wouldn't be leaving my ID (even a copy). Are these girls so very silly, or could the guy be trying to pull a fast one. But for 10k he can't be can he. So, maybe the ladies really are that silly - for 10k, crazy.

  5. Nice guys, thanks for your motivated responses... people like you would just stop fighting back if they were bitten by a shark... I don't complain about the construction noise, I manifest my anger about a total disrespect and selfishness of those Isaan workers (well thanks and total respect to them for building our nice appartments by the way) and especially greedy foremen who just don't give a shit about what's going on around them

after 17 years here, I know a bit about noise pollution in this country, thanks for reminding it though, just in case I forgot or didn't go to MBK for a while, today you can barely have a phone conversation in Panthip or in the BTS because of the noice created by their commercial speakers and screens

So it's not about waisting my time and energy trying to resolve the problem, it's about making it public that a crown property land next to one of the top hotel in Asia is just abandonned to those stupid truck drivers and foremen who sound their horn at 3am or scream in their microphone atop some stupid thai techno music at 5.30am to cheer a bunch of lazy ants/workers who just want to get back to sleep or smoke their krong thip in the back of a pick up... this is called corruption and pure egoism or lack of interest for other people, and it's not a good reason enough for me to move from this neighbourood that I like!

You are of course correct in your views, but what can be done / changed? Also the people that are driving the profits (complete on time... sell the condos) and demanding these work hours are, at the end of the day, the consumers like you or I (although recently they seem to be mostly Singaporean). In this society the baht rules which allows market forces to be powerful with no respect for the environment..... If the locals don't give a toss, and they don't, then it alll goes to sh_t, governments are taken over by... you get the picture.

You get the government that you deserve. You also get the environment that you deserve and if the indiginous population doesn't give a toss, then nothing changes. It's just a mystery how things work as well as they do here.

  6. It's a typical Thai trait of doing something without thinking it through first...

You don't let young children play with matches for fear of them getting burnt, you also teach them to look both ways before crossing a road... unfortunately this level of learning hasn't been developed yet in Thailand and so when they get a big red button to play with that could send off several nukes you can be sure that someone will press it to see what will happen and only after the dust has settled do they say "I don't think i'll press that again because i don't like it..."

If my wife is anything to go by, I think their next words would actually be...... "Not my fault"

Are we married to the same woman Barney? Would she follow it up with a long sulk and a few "If your country's so good, why...."

  7. Munted - if you've signed a contract already you have 15 days to get your non-B or your will have problems obtaining a non-B, which you need to get a work permit. So be quick - you can do the non-B in Bangkok if you're here now.

You should have a letter offering you a job to get a non-B (you should not have started work already - this doesn't really happen and can be a problem).

This might be a new law or one that hasn't previously been applied much - but it is being applied now.

Others - get a non-B in the UK and get a job that will support your work permit process (non-B needed) or you'll have problems / inconvienience with visas at the least, due to the new 30 day tourist stamp laws. But generally everything is tightening up so it's much better to be legal - if you are not I'd suggest another country might be less problematic nowadays.

Good luck. Working legally here is not so tough once you've got the non-B in place.

  8. I am living on the crown property land on Rajadamri Road behind the Four Season Hotel. This area is undergoing heavy building and hotel construction projects and it creates a lot of noise and disturbance... But the noise it creates at night when Bangkok comes to a more quiet and peaceful path is becoming unbearable. It has reached the point where using Earplugs has become useless.

It is clearly illegal in Thailand to let construction sites operate at night but only in my soi there are two sites that are working non-stop and the next two sois also have their lot of nocturnal activity. These project will become international chain 5 star hotels and luxuary condominiums for rich expats and well-off Thai.

Trucks unloading material, workers bawling and barking at each other without any consideration for working people who need their night of sleep or without even thinking that the neighbor 5 star hotel has some guest who would like to rest... all this is allowed thanks to the little envelope that some brown uniform team on a motorcycle come and get at dusk time. (I personally witnessed the scene several times).

Before getting into depression and sleep depravity, I am wondering which action can be taken. Write to the King and to his Crown Property Management office will surely be done soon. But I'd like to receive some more suggestion.

I feel sorry for you. The lack of noise pollution laws / enforcement is a serious problem - No sleep - stress - health problems - early death. Which is as serious as it gets really.

I used to live close to that exact area and the noise was one of my considerations to move. My new area has no construction, but I do get woken up by the call to prayer every day at 5am. Muslims, nice people, but you'd think they'd get an alarm clock in the 21C. I'm thinking of getting a loud hailer and shouting out some Buddhist / Jewish / Christian / Any prayers at 4am.

  9. I would say that the OP, richardb, is taking the pi55. If he's not, he is sooo green and I hope I never have to share space with him and his 6' teerak in a restaurant where the 6 footer is pawing him. How I hate that! Why can't they behave themselves in public places like the rest of us?!!

I'm quite pleased that the OB has relaxed and got his sense of humor back after you and others nicked his thread...

Of course your points are valid and important, just not relevant to this here thread. Maybe you'd like to start your own thread?

  10. I took my missus to:-

    1) Laos, over the friendship bridge - easy. Her thoughts "Thailand better, Thailand better...."

    2) Korea, they grilled us for an hour and tapped her into the computer added to my passport details. Her thoughts "Thailand no1, Thailand better..."

[You shouldn't have problems going to Korea as long as you're together and have return flights. Thai air do a special low fares for Thais, to Korea.]

    3) I tried Phuket. Her thoughts "My province better. Nakon N better."

Now I go on my own.

Good luck and have a nice holiday.

  11. Once I almost got Mike Tyson to punch me when I saw him in the Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas by talking smack to him. :o

I was in the LA Hilton, quite pissed (ok very), arguing with a couple of American service folk when I suggested that all Americans were wimps.... They asked me if all Americans including Evander Holifield were wimps and if I'd be able to "punch him out". Unbeknown to me Evander was standing behind me and listening to the conversation. My retort was that Evander may just have the edge on me but I reckon my mate Lennox would be able to deal with him easily enough (Lennox Lewis had knocked him out for the World title the previous week).

As silence broke out I turned round to see a very unhappy large man....

  12. Lanna and Chai Yai would be two good first stops for someone cutting their teeth on Muay Thai. Lanna is on Soi Chiang Kian off of Huay Kaew/Canal Road. Chai Yai is south of the city, but has an office near Thapae Gate (A few doors down from Black Canyon). Hope this helps.

Thank you - I'll visit them both.

    Many thanks, Jason

  13. You're old and fat and want to try Thai Boxing to get into shape? Are you kidding?

Regarding a place to chill out ... I hang out at John's Place near Tapai Gate. It's pretty much all phalang and easy to go and chat to some random person - often have an interesting conversation too. Would be interested in finding other places too though.

I hate sight-seeing, so can't help on your last question.

    WoO thanks for your reply.

Your first comment is pretty much what the girlfriend keeps saying, but I think it's important to keep the dream alive. On the same note, I'll email you back tomorrow afternnon, just after we've won the test match. John's Place (presuming it's Australian owned) should be a good place to go in a few weeks, the series should be level by then.

    :o

    Many thanks, Jason

  14. Well, there is no 'work-visa' as such, however, any kind of non immigrant-visa can be used to obtain a WP.

Since you are now under a non-imm B take you WP and company documents during the last month of your permitted stay to the immmigration office and apply for extention of stay up to one year (from original entry).

    Documents see here: http://www.thaivisa.com/visa/non-immigrant-visa.html

Immigration office will initially stamp 'application under consideration...come back on date...'

This might happen for 2-3 times and every time you should bring your WP to the abor dept. where it will be extented for the same period.

Once the extention is granted for 1 year, again change the date in hyour WP accordingly.

    Axel,

Thank you for the advise. I will do just as you suggest, so next stop is to collect the work permit, then go to the Bkk immigration office to get an extension.

    Thanks again, Jason

  15. My God She's at it again..GF Why dont you get a hobby??and a life while your at it... :D:o

My thoughts exactly. Who was it on another of these threads said it was like a "teenage girl's forum"?

As for the original question - who cares? As long as both parties are happy with their life & choices.

I have to agree with these two members. Pathetic stuff, not worthy of an answer...

But my thoughts on the original question are; NO STOP. I am not a teenage girl, or somebody trying (sadly) to impress them.

  16. I'm sorry if this thread / information is on here already (I've been looking and can't find it since the site revamp - great site though, thanks).

I have started the work visa process and am unclear as to how I should continue.

    Thus far:-

    1) I changed my tourist stamp to a non-B at the Bkk immigration office. (3 month visa)

    2) I've applied for my work visa and had all the correct paperwork, received a receipt that tells me to return next week to collect the work permit.

What's next? I've heard / read about changing the non-B to a one year, but then changing the work visa to tally... but I can't find the correct info.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Many thanks, Jason
