Do you have to be over 55?
Not for the extensions after the initial 30 day visa free entry, but for the SRRV you need to be 50+

I'm in the Philippines in Cagayan De Oro on Mindano. I live in the countryside with the locals all of whom are very friendly and many speak English. Nobody has asked for money or help with family stuff, they just go about their daily life.
My Filipino partner and I purchased some land and built a house, the relatives visit as and when but are not intrusive.
No I don't like the food but that's OK as foreign food is available in the malls or cash and carry and my partner is a good cook. There are also westernised restaurants if you want them.
I lived in Thailand over 10 years and yes the infrastructure is better there but once you get used to things here in the Philippines its easy to get used to a different way of living.
The real bonus is the visa structure here, you can stay up to 3 years on extensions without leaving or you can apply for an SRRV (retirement visa) and never have to leave at all. English is widely spoken so no problems with communication. All in all it suits me fine, but each to his own

So, for example,I live in Thailand (and I have declared that) but I have my UK State Pension paid into a UK bank in £. I could though have it paid into the Thai in baht if I wished.
Isn't that against the rules?

If you retire to the Philippines your UK pension will be increased each year as the Philippines and the UK have an agreement in law to maintain this.
If you give the DWP your Philippines bank details they will pay it to you in pesos.

Well it seems Paypal have had in the last months a lot of problems with account members being hacked.
Their answer so far has been to put in place a new safety protocol wich consists in sending you a key number
on your phone, and with this key number you can access to your account.
The problem is if you have changed your phone number in the real life, like it happens to a lot of us on a regular basis
for multiple reasons, but you don't have updated your new phone number on your paypal account you are not able anymore
to access to your account.
To update your phone number on your account, you need to loggin in the account
to loggin to your account, you need the key number send by paypal on your old phone number
it's a catch 22.
Of course the only way to contact paypal if you have a problem to access to your account
is to send a message using your account, again a catch 22
A lot of people aren't anymore able to access at their money in their paypal account
and it seems there is no any solution to resolve this problem.
I wonder if someone here have the same issue and have been able to solve it
or there is no any solution and it's really a way for Paypal to put the hand on millions of $ ?
Happened to me 3 months ago and today was the first time I got through to them on the phone. Due to covid19 they have been unable to answer most calls as no staff available.
However I finally reached them and they helped me access my account and changed the phone number for me.
As of December 9th if you haven't logged in for a year they are going to charge you the lesser of £12 or whatever your balance is. If its a nil balance you won't be charged. So a log in will prevent this happening

Just a word of caution: If the virus gets bad in SE Asia, I'd rather be getting medical care in Thailand than in the Philippines. JMHO. Cheers
But the cost of all treatment will be covered by the Philippine government through the philhealth system

Two different types of cheese, take your pick. Philippines is harder going but more rewarding in many respects, and they're generally not as weary of foreigners. Be aware that Peak Virus is yet to happen in both countries. Du30 yesterday announced a lockdown of Manila starting Sunday, unclear as yet whether this includes just land and sea transport, or air too.
All domestic travel including Air in and out of Manila.

OP if you have been here on a retirement extension for 20 years, why are you keeping 800,000 bht in the bank. Back then it was much less and was grandfathered, surely.

The 20k baht is the standard number but it is seldom asked for.
I have never heard of any location asking for more.
I'm still confused, I thought it was 10K for an individual and 20K for a family?

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your responses.
The Philippines will accept you. With pension option there is a deposit of $10,000.00 (which pays a small amount of interest) with a yearly subscription of $360. Pension needs a one time only statement from your pension provider and does not need to be paid to a Philippine bank.
The visa is lifetime so no further visits to immigration. It's called the Special residents retirement visa (SRRV) and is from the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) It has many benefits including the ability to work or invest.
They also have agents who assist you with the paperwork free of charge. Google to find out more.

I always thought it was 10,000 per person. Why do I think that?

I always thought it was the airport workers that handled baggage and not each individual airline, in which case they should take responsibility for damage.

I am lazy so I always use an agent. She gets there early and gets a ticket, I arrive about 9am, sign the prepared papers and wait to be called. She stays on after to get my re-entry permit and couriers my passport back to me. She also does the 90 day report. Cost of service for the year is 5,000 baht. Time cost to me is usually about 45 mins.

Some airlines have their own wheelchair service but the main service is provided by the airports. I have to use it as my mobility is quite impaired and I could not manage without it. The guys that work on it are great and deserve better money than they are paid.

How about boarding rules? technically the OP does not have a flight out within 30 days so he could be refused boarding.

I think it's six of one and half a dozen of the other, depending on what you want from life.
The thing about the Philippines is that it's easier to stay long term without doing border hops etc. Once you have your Special Residents Retirement Visa (SRRV) you never have to visit immigration again and can stay forever if you want. No re-entry permits and 90 day reports to be done, just relax.
However it does need to be renewed each year at a cost of $360 which would be roughly the same cost to do border hops and such like, (maybe a bit more but worth it)
The deposit for the visa is $20,000.00 or just $10,000.00 if you use your pension (must be over $800 a month) and does not have to be paid into a Philippines bank, just prove that you have a pension which is paid into a bank in any country.
The Philippines Retirement Authority (PRA) has accredited agents who do all the paperwork for you for free as they get paid by the PRA for each visa they do, they can also arrange to get your yearly renewal done for you.
Just Google P R A for all the info you need to get started.

My original transfer was into one Thai bank, then a few years later I moved it to Bangkok Bank, never any problems with extensions.
