  1. This is an interesting option from the Liberal Democratic Party (they have one incoming senator from NSW):

I don't know what the reference to the "savings account approach" means, or how practicable the whole proposal is, but someone's been giving some thought to expats in retirement.

For those who are in receipt of aged pensions and wish to permanently relocate to countries with a lower cost of living, the Liberal Democrats will offer a system of actuarially-calculated lump sum payments to replace the pension. There will be no opportunity to re-enter the welfare system upon return to Australia except through the savings account approach, leaving those who sign up to the offer in the same position as non-citizens with respect to welfare.

  2. Fascinating yes, but also very misleading. For example, there is legislation in place in countries such as the UK and the USA which provides penalties for racial discrimination, responses to the survey in those countries is almost certainly tainted by a desire to give a politically and legally correct answer!

From experience, the UK is one of the more racist countries I have lived in and I am a Brit., I'm sure that nearly everyone in the Cotswold's answered the survey positively although they all assumed that it meant foreign people going to live in Manchester or Birmingham and not next door to their country retreat.

Good point. The Bradley Effect could be at work in countries like the UK, US, Australia, etc. We just don't know. These are the data for what they're worth. Probably worth about as much as any survey that depends on subjective responses.

The Bradley effect theory posits that the inaccurate polls were skewed by the phenomenon of social desirability bias. Specifically, some white voters give inaccurate polling responses for fear that, by stating their true preference, they will open themselves to criticism of racial motivation. Members of the public may feel under pressure to provide an answer that is deemed to be more publicly acceptable, or 'politically correct'. The reluctance to give accurate polling answers has sometimes extended to post-election exit polls as well. The race of the pollster conducting the interview may factor into voters' answers.

  3. A fascinating map of the world’s most and least racially tolerant countries

The English speaking and Latin American countries, together with Norway and Sweden are the most tolerant of racial difference, according to this survey published in May 2013.

India and Jordan stand out as the least tolerant, followed by a raft of countries including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, Indonesia, Vietnam and South Korea.

Thailand is in the next category, in which 20 - 29.9 percent of respondents say they would not want people of another race as neighbours.

For the most tolerant countries the figure is 0 - 4.9%.

Note, however, that a significant number of countries in Africa, Central Asia and Southeast Asia were not surveyed.

The map can be found at

  4. You were still the team of the decade, you were just outplayed and out generalled that day. clap2.gif

It was the way they lost, went the biff, etc. that was embarrassing. Champion teams just shouldn't fall apart that way.

I was in BKK at the time, but friends who watched it in Brisbane at the public screening said that the people felt embarrassed.

Still, it's 10 years ago now. (10 years already!!)

My take on the game is different to yours.

A lot of people forget that Port finished on top in 2002, 2003 and 2004

so were obviously a terrific team. Brisbane were a team of aging champions.

To make it even worse, despite finishing 2nd, Brisbane had to travel to Melbourne

to play Geelong in the preliminary final despite finishing higher. The AFL had a deal

that 1 preliminary final had to be played at the MCG. There was a feeling that not

enough was done by the AFL to rectify this (us non-Victorian followers can identify

with this). The AFL changed it the following year but there was a general feeling that

the AFL wanted the Port to win their first grand final.

As far as biff, I clearly remember Josh Carr starting a lot of the blues and in a lot of cases,

    Brisbane were retaliating.

If I were a Brisbane supporter, embarrassed isn't a word I'd use. Something like proud would

    be more apt.

Well, I feel better now. smile.png As I said I was in BKK at the time and didn't see the game.

Thanks for that background. I either didn't know it or had forgotten.

    Cheers

  6. If you return to oz prior to the birthday you still have to remain there for the 2 year qualifying period, THis period starts again each time you leave the country even temporarily.

Not so, harrry. That's what we thought a while back, and that's the advice I received over the phone from Centrelink responding to my emailed question to them on the my.Gov.au website. However, I've just received written advice from the Department of Social Security, who interpret the Act, as follows:

"Temporary travel undertaken within the two year period, after resuming residence, will result in the suspension of the Age Pension. This travel does not impact on the two year residence period which commences from the date residence resumed."

DSS confirmed that the advice I'd received from Centrelink was incorrect and that the two-year period starts from the date of returning to Australia to resume long-term residence. Short trips are not counted.

    Cheers

  7. OP post seems to fit a profile of "ghost writer posts" low number of posts and a tv demographic pertinent topic that will almost certainly evoke strong emotions and many responses.

I could be wrong, i dont have a masters degree.

    I think you are right.

These people create a thread with a topic that they know will provoke a lot of reactions and guaranteed to gather many replies, or in other words, they set the bait, sit back and wait for the fish to bite, the fish being us and in many cases the OP`s will disappear until another time.

I have this vision of some loner sitting on a computer with nothing much else to do and laughing out loud. Must remember to avoid getting enticed into these games and not participating in these types of threads next time

I have a feeling you might be right. I worked in three Thai schools, government and private, in Bangkok and a provincial capital, for 13 years and never heard of such a thing as the OP claims. There might, however, be some discrimination against dual national English speaking kids in some matters, e.g. scholarships, where English is a criterion.

  8. Being genuinely accepted takes a very very long time. And then at the end, don't be surprised at what you learn even having been friends for decades.

    Nationalism is a horrible thing.

Agreed. But there are 3 different levels of nationalism.

    Street level.

    Gov't level.

'Face' level. (by this I mean appearance)

Unfortunately Thais have symptoms of all three and 'loving' it. One of their 'culture' things.

I think the problem is "chauvinism" rather than "nationalism".

    chauvinism
    ˈʃəʊv(ɪ)nɪz(ə)m/
    noun
    1. 1.
      exaggerated or aggressive patriotism.
      synonyms: jingoism, excessive patriotism, blind patriotism, excessive nationalism, sectarianism, isolationism, excessive loyalty, flag-waving, xenophobia, racism, racialism, racial prejudice,ethnocentrism, ethnocentricity;
"they have a tendency towards small-mindedness and chauvinism"
  9. Cheers Chook, I can see why you're a cranky old bastard now, you'd need to be 70 to remember a Saint's flag wouldn't you?

Any room here for a South Aussie who's team has actually won a flag this century? smile.png

    b_pppsfc.jpg

thumbsup.gif Ha ha, still a cranky old bastard in training and have a few years to go to reach 70, 22 yrs actually. Yep never seen a saints premiership and hope I do before the day comes that I pass over.

Everyone is welcome on here for sledging and banter and everyone takes it in their stride. No malice or offence is ever intended or comments should be taken personally. Hey we even have a Collingwood supporter.biggrin.png

  11. DREAM TEAM

Ok guys the Dreamteam is now open and you can start building your teams on the AFL site.

I registered a league called The Thailand MOB but for some reason they didn't give me a code.

    https://fantasy.afl.com.au/help/index.html#/guidelines

Hi Martin Congratulations, you have successfully created your league: Thailand MOB. Your league code should you wish to share it with your mates is: Remember that in 2014 you can create up to 5 classic leagues and join an unlimited number. Good luck for the 2014 season and may the best team win! The NAB AFL Fantasy Team

I can't see anywhere on the linked page to type anything.

  12. These are Sportsbets' markets for the final 8 in 2014.

Sigh... Another barren year for the Bears/Lions. xsad.png.pagespeed.ic.gBNm0PzB6t.webp

But... Prepare to be surprised. The Lions did well in the draft and pre-season trades, and, apart from Yeo and Docherty, the guys that left weren't much use.

    Merry Christmas one and all!

  13. Collingwoods membership count is quite misleading IMO.

For example, they have 3 game membership packages, memberships for babies under one,

memberships for people who can't or don't go to the footy etc etc.

20 000 of those memberships are for people outside of Victoria also.

It would be interesting to see how many memberships are for general admission and for reserved

    seating.

I know a lot of clubs have packages for juniors etc, but counting 3 gamers as members is a bit rich IMO.

Brisbane have 3-game memberships, too. I've got one for the afternoon games at the Gabba (don't like night games).

They even have pet memberships, too. laugh.png I don't think they count them in the total though.
