  1. Some random thoughts after reading this, in no particular order.

I, like many live some of my time in Thailand, I am old, and I have some health issues. I often think about what I will do if my health becomes a problem. At the moment I believe I would be better off in Thailand, many people belittle the Thai health system but my personal experience is that they are competent and caring people. I have had reason to be admitted to a local hospital, they treated me well and gave me guidance to change my behaviour and now I am controlling my health better.

In relation to the diabetes , I was called up to attend a local clinic when they were doing blood tests in our village the result showed that I was in the high risk area and again I needed to adjust my food types. My experience with the medical system in Australia was no where near as good, in MY PERSONAL experience.

I know I am rambling but surely a visit to the hospital can give this guy some help and indication of what exactly is his problem. It may in fact be an easy fix.You dont need to go to an expensive private hospital.

How many of us older retirees could very easily fall into this guys situation, we need plan for ourselves and our dependents .

  2. took on as checked luggage, put it in suitcase and packed inside of the case then wrapped in a towel and all around. The HDD went with me in carry on BUT it was not 20 KG. I think I used one of those net bags the ladies use to wash undies to put stuff in side the case. It was a nothing to loose situation for me and I had no problem with it.

  3. Thanks for your reply, sometimes the answer is right under your nose !!!

I "googled" for hours and found a few, one guy said 5000Baht then changed to 25,000Baht when he smelt a falang !!!!

Lanna are local and will do it.

  4. Can anyone tell me if there is someone or some place who can give a certified valuation on a house.

I am putting this here as the house is in Chiangrai prov.

I thought that the lands dept. or the Amphoe could or would but it seems not.

    regards.

  5. I am interested in your comment about grid tie, is this an established thing in Thailand ??

I have some experience living on solar and the costs have dramatically reduced over the last few years. The overlooked problem has been the replacement of the batteries, in Australia that meant putting A$10 or more per week aside just for the batteries.

Obviously with out this cost I believe that solar is close to being an alternative.

There is a bloke in Chiangmai who knows his business (ABO) So no doubt there are others around.

  6. I ask because I dont know the cost of lessons.

I agree with your arithmetic, but I put in the average of 6 students- then its near 1000Baht per hour.

If you take lessons privately its about 750Bahts per hour.

As I say I dont know the value of language lessons.

  7. What real reasons are there for this attitude? I often feel I live in a different Thailand than some people and I dont get these negative feelings.

What attitude? I love living in Thailand and am usually accused of wearing "rose colored glasses". However, I am not a citizen and I do not think that it is impossible that foreigners will eventually find it very difficult to get long-term visas here unless they are wealthy.

Sorry if you misinterpreted, I asked as you seem an established poster who is well settled here, not to be rude to you.

The biggest regret in life for me was that my work did not allow me to be with my children in their formative years, this is a thing that is related to work, not necessarily about living in Thailand,

This is what the original post was about but as usual it turns to a Thais dont like us thing. Thats the attitude I dont seem to have directed at me.

  8. Thank God I do not have a family. It is worrisome enough trying to figure out how long the Thais will put up with us without having to worry about a wife and children. I do not envy you family guys as far as all the responsibility. shock1.gif

I have read your comment and the few later ones, you have been a poster for 7 or more years.

I often see comments like these but ignore them, you seem to be established so I take a little more notice.

  9. I bought an expensive item from the company mentioned in post #2.

    They reneged on the warranty

What surprises me though is its a German product and I dont understand why they dont show any concern for their reputation.

  10. Well since I started it.............

I took advice from you all, scribbled lots of notes,

Then I bought a Nuvi 1450 from Australia, it has Nth America and Canada maps and also the

Garmin Thailand maps installed, it cost me 6200Baht posted, everything legit.

I worried a bit about customs but didnt get any request for more money from them.

The disadvantage of this is that a GPS from O/S wont have junction view, the Thai language and a few other features.

The over riding feature I wanted was Lane assist which it has.

I can not compare Apples to Apples when looking at the available units here and O/S but the cost here is just too high.

I believe the units here are discontinued models which is a problem to me as I have had problems with Garmin software before.

This is a problem to me as I have spent most of my life in rural or isolated places and I believe I should support the local dealer-

otherwise he wont be there when you are looking for him but a superseded model at inflated cost lost out.

Do it again ???? probably buy the cheapest unit here for about 3900Baht, smaller screen no lane assist.

By the way there is also some good advice on Thaivisa GPS forum.

  11. Well I went to Central, they had a couple there a bit pricey.

Went out to Macro they had a few no name GPS's

Looked again at Eagle on the net.

Two things, the GPS's available in Thailand are old models and or discontinued.

Its a bit hard to compare with overseas ones on apples to apples base but I

think I am going to buy from Aus with genuine maps loaded for less than half price

    and a current supported model.
