  1. LF, trying to confuse the folks with some common sense?  :D

Sorry sir, I will try not to do it again :o

    a prostitute only school

Do they have these here, what do they teach.

I had a feeling someone was going to pick up on that :D

But to give your joke a serious answer. Yes they do. There is (maybe was) at least one school in Bangkok where they teach Sex workers (and Ex-) Real world skills so they can get out/stay out of that field. I don't know if has been succesfull and I can't remember what the place is called.

  2. Now that this thread has calmed down a bit, there are a few things I would like to throw out here for people to think about when the see statistics in regards to Student prostitution.

This is not aimed at any one specific so there is no need for anyone to get defensive.

Consider the source- Teachers: Teachers in Thailand are respected authority figures, however a student would likely never confide in a teacher about such a shameful thing as being involved with prostitution. Thais loose face at the drop of a hat and Prostitution is a big drop for a student.

Teachers Part 2: There is usually a generation gap between teachers and students. The way a female student today acts around male students would be completely unacceptable when the teacher was a student, this can lead to a possibly false impression that the student is promiscuous or even a prostitute.

Newspapers: Newspapers are not in the news business they are in the money making business, Stories are written in such a way to get people to buy the paper. Most likely there is some truth in the article, but issues are blown up to shock and scare people. If a few students are found doing something morally unacceptable in Thai society then the headline will read “Thai students everywhere are sexy crazy!!!!!!”

Students at Other Universities: Students can be very Petty. A student at a respected university such as CMU will often look down on a student from a school like Payap. One reason is because Payap is a “If you have the money you get a diploma” type school.. most if not all students at Payap didn’t test high enough to get into a government university and because Payap is very expensive The student there often come from wealthier families. Plenty of reason to spread misinformation about Payap students.

Lets also consider that if a University such as Payap truly had a high percentage of prostitutes (even 5%) then it would have a reputation for it. If Payap had this Reputation then young woman who were not interested in prostituting themselves would not attend Payap for fear of being thought of as a prostitute. Therefore Payap would either be a prostitute only school or out of business. Don’t forget where we are, “Face” is everything here.

Of course there are likely to be some student prostitution and some “Kept” women but it seems unlikely that it’s a very high percentage at any school.

Well just some things to think about..

  3. Whenever I get down to Bangkok I always stop at Oishi Japanese Buffet at the Siam Discovery Center it's around 400BT (prices vary depending on time of day) the only down side is the buffet is so large you wont even get to eat a fraction of what you want before you are full .. (unless you don't like Japanese food of course).

  4. Well I Guess I will have to be the first to admit that I do use 1222 :o

for my personal line anyway. I use Ego e15d at 175B per 15 days. They let you stay online 24 hours per call ... there are usually 3 or 4 bad days per month though where you just can't seem to stay connected. I usually connect withing 5 minutes .. busier times it can take upto 15 but I stay connected so long that it doesnt bother me. I download 8GB+ (yep that big G big B)of data every month I pay 350B for internet every month and my phone bill is 300 - 400B.

For work: I have been supporting a couple of Movies that are filming in town and we have 256k ADSL from KSC and its Expensive at 13,000 per month .. but it is reliable and we actually get the full 256K. We could have gone with cheaper Packages like Ji-Net at 6,000 (prices from the end of December when we set up the office) but the "Best Effort" downtime clause wasn't comforting.

  5. Another possiblity for a cooler running system is to pick up a bare bones Shuttle XPC http://us.shuttle.com/ I have two .. one with a P4 and one with an Athlon. The XPC uses a large elaborate heat pipe and one small fan (some newer models use 2 small fans). The Athlon runs hotter than the P4 but I havent had any heat related problems with Either unit.

  7. Well I can recommend myself, I am not sure if this Violates forum policy but oh well.

I have my own business here in Chiang Mai, I don't think I have done work for any Thaivisa members so most likely no one here will second my recommendation. Most of my time is currently occupied doing support for a Hollywood movie that is currently filming here, but I am willing to fit in anyone in need provided that they live in town (or close). Also I am not cheap Like a Thai, But I am very experienced .. and I have at least 2 Screwdrivers :o.

If you are interested or want a list of locals who can vouch for me please PM me.

  8. The authorities are coming down much harder on MP3 than DVDs or VCDs because so many of those on sale are compilations of Thai artists. Grammy & other big supporters of Thai Ruk Thai object to this, hense the crackdown.

In addition to that many of the Big players in Music (such as Sony) have a corporate presence in Thailand, whereas the big players in Movies (such as Sony) don't.

  9. Bluetooth is a short range (10 - 100m) wireless comminication technology. You can us it to communicate with a bluetooth capable computer for file tranfers, backing up your phones data or to use as GPRS modem to access internet on a Bluetooth enabled laptop. You can also use it with a Wireless Bluetooth headset for for hands free communication.

  11. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management

You should see a List of drives in your computer . look for the one without a letter .. right click it and choose format .. follow the instructions .. and you should be able to use the disk within minutes.

  12. I was at that shop in April and picked up a few TV show Boxed sets at 70BT per disc. Everytime I go there they have a different price but they do have the best selection. There are a couple more shops on the same road that have a smaller selection but sometimes you can find stuff the bigger shop doesn't have.

  13. If your Laptop has a two pronged plug you shouldnt have a problem using a Thai outlet, If your laptop plug is three pronged then you will need an adaptor, they are available just about everywhere.

Check the external power supply for you laptop. There will be a line for Voltage input .. If it reads something like INPUT 1xx-2xxV then you are fine if it only has 1xxV then you would need a step down convertor.

  14. While the rules seem unclear, my understanding of the "sin sot" Is that it is to repay the parents for what they have invested into their daughter to make her worth marrying. This would have been paid off by her first husband. I have never heard of a Thai man paying the sin sot for a woman that’s been previously married and I recommend that you don’t pay either.

  15. ChiangMaiThai,

I have purchased from many websites using my US based credit card while living here in thailand. As long as you have the items shipped to your US based address you shouldn't either. Did you try using the proxy servers I mentioned in the other thread?

    /SM

  16. ChiangMaiThai,

Start simple, Don't worry about terminal server unless you have to. Follow the instructions I gave you. Start with the public proxy list In my first post.

I have used it to view sites that had blocked traffic from Thai proxies. Including my credit card company which requires me to logon.

    /SM

  17. Use a proxy server , This will make it look like you are in the country where the proxy server is located. goto this page http://www.publicproxyservers.com/page1.html find a server in a country that is acceptable to the website you are trying to use.

    in Interenet explorer ..

Go to 'Tools" -> "Internet Options" -> "Connections"

Click "Lan Settings" then under "Proxy Servers" check the first box "Use proxy server for your ...)

Then Click advanced in the Http section put the address for the proxy server and the port number (80 or 8080) OK out of everything .. and you should be able to access most sites that block Thai proxies.
