it sounds like the villagers sneering at him are not people he should be too concerned about.
you see a lot of people in the uk sneering at people from other cultures, but they are usually fairly thick and most people from other cultures are encouraged to not be too concerned about them either.
Ok, but if - for instance - a white Brit started to mix within a 100% asian community in the UK, and started to dress and act accordingly, wouldnt that be a little odd?
same scenario in reverse? might seem a little odd, but i wouldn;t sneer at them.
would you?

yes, it's quite funny that i can understand farangs speaking thai, but my gf cant understand them speaking her own language. i always think of the older guy in the chinese restaurant at home speaking english in his heavy chinese accent.
sometimes it's to do with context also, a kiwi saying 'ten' to me sounds like 'tin'. some clarification is needed afterwards or maybe the scenario will give it away.
my gf says she is often misunderstood when speaking with her own kin, but it only takes a second to clarify what she meant. 99% of farangs are not skilled enough in thai to be able to do this.
a massage lady said to me in english last week - "Do you have a problem on your body?". it took 3 repeats before i got what she meant. she more or less pronounced it all correctly, but the grammar and rhythym of the sentence seemed odd to me. as a native english speaker and i just couldn't get it. same in reverse i guess. a native english speaker could have just explained immediately.

i should have included 'the Vested Interests with the flashy websites'
be careful.
"flashy websites", so what if it comes from an average looking site with no thought given to their image it is more reliable?
What a load of old cobblers.
As for "vested interests" you might be amazed to hear that real estate firms rarely deal with every single developer in the country and are not actually making money from every project (if only that was true).
Anyway how do you define a "vested interest" in real estate?
If you own / rent / plan to buy/ plan to sell / plan to rent you could be perceived as having a vested interest, a bias if you will, of some description, so that would be... errr... everyone outside Thailand, except the homeless then....
hmmmm
So if there are any homeless people or someone overseas out there who has no real estate interests in Thailand and fancies putting together a free research report on the condo market after speaking to every developer in Bangkok, and confirming the total amount and value of each of their projects and independently checking and confirming their sales figures, please raise your hand....
Perhaps I will go to a plumber for electrical advice next time as ya know he doesn't have any vested interests in saving cash on installing electrical jobs... I mean come on... does this seem like paranoia to anyone else?
i'd call a vested interest somebody who has money invested in something and wants to increase the value of that investment. dont really understand the rest of what you are talking about.
prices don't always go up, get yourself tuned into the us market .
read about what's happening in spain.
or maybe you could just follow the sheep and get yourself a cool 7million baht house in ireland

this was just posted up in the news section also;
Mass transit expansion boosts sales of surrounding property
BANGKOK: -- Sales of new homes easily accessible to mass transit system routes recently approved by the government should help improve Bangkok's battered and sagging property sector, currently beset by political and economic challenges, according to a leading real estate appraisal executive.
Agency for Real Estate Affairs president Sopon Pornchokchai said bidding for the construction of the Red Line connecting Rangsit, Bang Sue and Talingchan is expected to be held in July and should be a blessing for the property sector.
Current political and economic crises have already lowered average housing prices by approximately 25 per cent during the first quarter of this year, Mr. Sophon said.
And government measures aimed at stimulating housing sales are not very fruitful because the public is cautious on spending while businesses are reluctant to invest, he said, adding that housing values are anticipated to fall about 20 per cent in 2007.
Political problems will worsen if the general election scheduled for December is postponed, Mr. Sophon said. And furthermore, the economy would be negatively affected for a long period if any new government formed after the election is not stable.

i look off my balcony and i can see maybe ten BIG condo blocks going up too. tall cranes all over the skyline. i dont think there is enough demand for everything they are currently building. (i can remember up until maybe 4 years ago when the big office block next to central world lay empty, half finished, for many years).

we used to use 0844 861 2525 (telesavers.co.uk) to call from uk to thailand.
calling back to uk from thailand if you use 009 or 008 or 007 as the international code (instead of 001) the calls are cheap enough (less than 10baht/minute).

yes, my gf uses it like aanon has explained.
another thing is, i often get questions asked that are formed like 'reu xxxx' , you know the usual 'gin khao reu yang?' or 'ja bpai reu bplao?'.
i thought that sometimes it may be a shortened version of those types of questions; eg. i have it in phrase books and think i occassionally hear - 'sabai dee reu?'
i guess in english it could be like shortening 'are you going or not?' to 'are you going, or?'
is that another usage?

Stopped using lloyds a couple of years ago as they were too expensive for cash withdrawals and transfers etc. i complained about their rates etc but just got a reply saying, as far as they were concerned, they were competitive. switched to nationwide, far better.

i got best results by saying "tay" + "wait" , where "tay" rhymes with day and "wait" is how you would pronounce it in english.
That's actually the way I would write it for myself, as I am Scottish.
Most English people say te a different way than I.
I used to say เ like เเ , and vice versa until I realised.
yes, that's a good point about transliterations of vowel sounds. i often see, for example, 'ruk' or 'rak' for love. a kiwi, say, might read the first correctly, but for me it would sound way off and i'd be nearer with the second.

i stayed in thewet the first time i came to thailand and in my first couple of days I saw it spelt many different ways. i couldnt get the taxi drivers to understand where i wanted to go. I had , taewez, thewet, thewes, tewet and i think there were a few other variations.
