  1. Anyone know where I can find a list of car parts translated from Thai to English?

I'm trying to decifer the parts list on a car repair estimite but I'm not finding the words in my se-ed's dictionary or any of the free on-line translators.

  2. Yes, we can help you. For vehicles under 15 years we can offer 2 + 1 which is Third Party, Fire & Theft plus an agreed amount for your vehicle if involved with another vehicle – quite reasonable premiums !

So if you get a policy like this on a 14 year old car, will they drop you when it turns 15?

Also, with this policy, can you get your car repaired at the dealership garage?

Are there any options for collision coverage on a car over 15 years old?

  3. 50k sounds a bit much. My girlfriend grew mushrooms for a while in the village. I don't know what type but she bought the ready mix bags that howto talked about in his post. We put up a frame for the shed made of cut trees and scrap wood then covered it in black plastic sheeting. Cost 600 baht for the roll of plastic. 1000 ready mix bags were delivered and cost 5 baht per bag. Total start up cost 5,600 baht.

These bags produced mushrooms daily for almost 3 months. Took around 2 hours of work in the morning and 2 hours at night. She then sold them in front of the house in the village and made between 200-400 baht per day. Not too bad for 4 hours work. Selling them was just a matter of being home when people dropped by to buy them.

Funny part of the story is she just wanted to get this set up for her mother to make money, but her mother later decided it was too much work!

  4. I plan to go to Laos next week to apply for a non-O for retirement. The web site:

http://www.thaiembassy.org/vientiane/consu...ervices_en.html states the required documents as:

    Passport

    Visa application

    Curriculum vitae

    Copy of bank statement

Is the "Curriculum Vitae" still a requierment? I haven't see it mentioned anywhere on this form.

I'm using a letter from the US embassy as proof of funds. Will the Thai embassy need to keep the original copy or will I get it back?

  5. I went to the Nong Khai immigration office and was told I cannot apply for a extention of stay for retierment using my non-imm type ED visa. I was instructed to go get a non-O at a Thai embassy and come back to apply for the extention.

I plan to go to Laos next week to get the non-O. What should I bring?

http://www.thaiembassy.org/vientiane/consu...ervices_en.html states that I need to bring:

    Passport

    Visa application

    Curriculum vitae

    Copy of bank statement

I assume I also need at least one passport photo. Do they need copies of my passport? All pages?

I had to google "curriculum vitae" to find out what that was, basicly a resume. What infomation are they looking for on this?

I have a income verification letter from the US embassy as proof of funds. The letter is dated 17 july 2009. Will the Thai embassy want to keep the letter? I will need to use it to apply for the extention later. How long is the letter valid for use?

Also, after obtaining the non-O should I wait 30 days or apply for my extention right away?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

  6. You can't change to a OA visa. A change of visa status is done from a tourist visa or visa exempt entry to a non immigrant visa.

You already have a non immigrant visa.

You can go to immigration and apply for an extension of stay based upon retirement if you can meet the financial requirements. You can do this within the last 30 days of your current permit to stay. You will need to prove income of 65,000 baht per month or have 800,000 baht in a Thai bank for 60 days or a combination of the 2 totaling 800,000 baht.

You should check with your local immigration office to see if the will do it or not with an entry from a ED visa. But according to the rules you should be able to do it.

If not you will need to go to one of the nearby consulates and get single entry non-o visa using your passport as proof of being over 50.

A non-oa is a special visa that can only be issued by a consulate or embassy in the US (your home country).

    Thanks Joe,

I'll go to the immigration office and ask now that I know what I'm asking for! (an extension of stay, not a new visa).

  7. I'm a U.S. citizen in Thailand on a Non-Imm (catagory Education) visa. I will be 50 years old in the beginning of July. My Visa "Utilize before" date ended on 1 June 09. My "permit to stay" stamp is good until 19 Aug 09.

Am I within the time limits to request a Visa change?

Beer Lite wrote (in another post that has been closed): "if you have at least 21 days remaining on your stay."

Just to clarify, does this refer to 21 days prior to the "permit to stay" stamp date or the "Utilize before" Visa date?

I didn't see anything about the 21 day rule on the MFA web page.

  8. I'm studying at Walen and I'm happy with it but not everyone is. They have a particular method that suits some but not everyone. Some teachers stick to the method, some vary it a little. Check it out thoroughly to make sure it's what you're looking for. Must who are not satisfied did not check the method and course details properly before they signed up and paid their money. Can't blame the school for that.

I read about the method on their web site, sounds interesting. This method must be effective for you if your happy with it. How long have you been taking classes at Walen and how fluent are you? Do you find the course difficult or easy? Do you need to put in much study time outside of class?

  9. Refering to your post on obtaining a Thai drivers license, which license office did you go to and where is it located?

I'm coming to Bangkok to get my license but I'm not familier with the city. I'll be looking for a hotel that will be easy to get to the license office, the US embassy and a clinic for the med certificate. Any suggestions?

I'm staying in Udon Thani, but immigration here has made it difficult to get a license here without a housebook.

Also, anyone know if I can legally apply for my licence in Bankok if my address is in another province (Udon Thani)? Will this present any problems?

    Thanks,

To answer my own question (if anyones interested), it was no problem getting my license in Bangkok using my address in Udon Thani. Stayed in the Nana area, short walk to the US embassy on wireless road, found a little clinic on sukumvit for the med certificate, hopped on the BTS on sukumvit to the Mochit station, short walk to the Chatuchak DLT. EZ!

I'll be coming into town for the same purpose...whereabouts along Sukhumvit (relative to soi Nana) did you find the clinic?

regards to Mr Snatcheral :o ...

Walk up soi Nana, take a right on Sukhumvit, a couple blocks up (around soi 10?) is a dental/medical clinic that's only open at night. If you don't see it, stop in any pharmacy and ask. Thats how I found it.

I'll tell the Natch you said hi!

  10. May be somebody has already ask it, but this forum is so big.

I have 5 years Thai DL (my eu DV is expired) and I would get a valid International DL.

    How can I get?

Is it really valid outside Thailand (eg. Australia, New Zealand, Europe)??

    Thak you for your informations.

There was a big counter at the Chatuchak DTL for international drivers license's. On the same floor (2nd?) that you apply for drivers license.

Not sure what you need here in Thailand, I got one in the US based on my US drivers license (and the cash of course). And there's a BUNCH of countries listed on it that it's valid in.

  12. today got first, 1 year, thai auto license.

    usa citizen on toursit visa

they say they will accept a thai immigration proof of residence. thai immigration says they no longer issue this. so the embassy/consulate is the only option.

this, for me, was a simple sworn statement with no evidence required. cost $30 and about 30 minutes.

got the medical at a local clinic., cost 30 baht and about 5 minutes. they know what you need.

i was able to do the whole process myself with virtually zero thai language skills. go upstairs to the big information counter to begin, (they speak english there), and follow the pointing fingers thereafter. no problem.

cost me 205 baht. 105 plus another 100 'tax?'. about 1 -2 hours start to finish with lunch in between. near tesco and big c so was able to kill time easy.

had standard usa license from california. passport, medical and residence forms. make copies before hand but if you don't there is a copy place downstairs.

they did the pictures there and created the license while i waited.

take a book to read as the wait will be boring.

simple visual tests were taken. no written. no driving.

all in all, if you have a need or desire do it. it is easy.

  13. As you can see from the above post by Irish, the buracrates in Udon Thani have made it difficult for a falang to get a licence. I plan to go to the U.S. Embassy in Bankok to get my letter of residence and apply for my licence in Bankok.

My Question is, can I apply for my licence in Bankok if my address is in another province (Udon Thani)? Will this present any problems?

  14. does a certificate of residence from the US embassy have to be translated into Thai before it is presented with a driver's license application? What is required by the embassy for them to issue the cert. of residence?...thanks

No it does not need to be translated into Thai. At the USA embassy you sign an Affidavit pay the fees and wait for the document.

Do you still need to take this Affidavit from the embassy to the immigration office for there "letter of address verification" or can you take the embassy Affidavit directly in to the transportation office as your proof of address?
