  1. I've been rejected by taxis many times, I think it's their right to do so. Yes it can be annoying, but why should they be forced to take people against their own discretion? After all it may be a public access service but it is provided by a private party.

No, it's not their right, it's against the law. Simple as that.

    Then the law is dumb.

A taxi should have the right to refuse a passenger in many circumstances, but not for refusal to use the meter. eg the passenger wants to go from Pattaya to Bangkok when he only has 30 minutes of his shift left, the passenger is drunk, smelly or obnoxious etc etc

I wonder if the same people complaining would be happy to have a law that would force them to take work at a loss (on top of being a low paying job to begin with), or that would endanger them, or work extra time on demand, etc, etc...

Easy, don't become a taxi driver if you don't like the pay or the basics of the job. If they are having to "take a loss" at their job, that still doesn't give them the right to rip off people by not using meters.

  2. color blindness abnd other vision impairments mean you see less...THIS IS DANGEROUS! - I have a colleague who is color blind, I noticed this as a result of his driving - unable to tell types of road sign and failure to anticipate a traffic light.

After he made these mistakes, i asked if he was "OK" - he casually told me he was color blind so "drove differently" from some people .

i won't go in a vehicle drive by him any more.

Your friend's color blindness wasn't the problem. You friend is just an (DELETED). "Unable to tell the types of road signs."??? (DELETED)

I am alright with the color vision test. What I don't get is why it needs to be repeated. Color blindness is a genetic trait. If you pass the test once, you should be good forever, unfortunately, the Thais don't understand that. Perhaps they believe you can "catch" color blindness from others.

  3. Why should I have to pay more for a taxi driver to do his job? How about making taxi drivers do the job they've chosen to do.

You sound like a guy whose wages are not set by a government body unlike taxi drivers, right?

Sure, I make a decent salary and get a yearly raise. However, I have chosen this work and they have chosen their line of work. I'm sure they knew what they were getting before becoming a taxi driver. It doesn't give them the right to run without meters and not accept riders who need to go somewhere.

  4. "And who made America the world's policeman anyway?"

Perhaps it was all those people and countries that ask for our help when they need it.

How often have we heard, "Why aren't the Americans doing something about such and such" when there's some sort of atrocity or disaster in the world.

    I don't think I've ever heard:

    - Why aren't the French doing something? (ha ha ha...right)

    - Why aren't the Canadians doing something? (cause they'll just let the Americans do it)

    - Why aren't the Mexicans doing something? (God help us if that question ever arises.)

For a lot of countries/people the only people they can turn to for help is America or Great Britain. Hopefully Thailand won't need to make that call; at least while I'm still living here.

Did Libya ask for your help? Did Iraq ask for your help? Did Afghanistan ask for your help? etc..etc...etc...

For the second time we fought Iraq, I thought that was a mistake. Bush should be held accountable for that action.

The first time we fought them (Desert Storm), they weren't asking for our help, but Kuwait and Saudi Arabia did ask for our help.

For Afghanistan, we weren't fighting the country, we were fighting those that had taken up residence there and were training in the country.

  6. So many people will tell you that they earn 100,000 baht per month plus, at an 'international school'.

Generally, it is absolute nonsense. They are simply the sort of people who think overstating their salaries somehow makes them more impressive.

No doubt there are many who will reply saying what they earn and that 'their friends' tell them, blah blah.

You are more correct in what you have heard about the salary expectations.

Approximately half of the teachers at my school make at least 100,000 baht per month. This does not include any type of benefits, just salary.

Granted, most of our teachers have been working at the school for at least 8-10 years and most of them receive at least a 6% yearly raise. Start with a salary around 60-70K and it doesn't take but a few years to get a fairly high salary.

We are not an international school, but we do teach in an English program.

There are several schools that pay well in Bangkok; and they're not all international schools. You just have to shop around for the right school and when you meet someone that comes from a high-paying school try to get hired.

  7. You're right about it being mayhem; if my gf hadn't gone with me not sure how long it would have taken to sort everything out.

The computer test is one I never want to take again. I'm sure it was written by someone who thought they had a good command of the English language...they were wrong. Passed it the first time but not sure I could do it again.

  8. Well of course, if somebody is hard of hearing I would expect the others to speak loudly. However, it is not loud in my house or outside my house. I too would speak loudly if I was in a loud environment. When I'm not, I speak softly, as do most intelligent people.

Sent from my HTC One using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

  9. There's an inverse relationship between a person's intelligence and their loudness. For some reason I have noticed this for years and can't stand when people speak loudly for no reason. I seem to notice it more living here...hmmm.

    For example:

my boss is very smart and speaks softly

my maid is dumb as dirt and yells everything

    It's science people!

  10. The OP suggested that a 20 to 30 year age difference would mean that the couple have little in common. True.

However, what would I have in common with a Thai woman my own age? Again, not much, other than some wrinkles.

I've been with my girl (who is 25 years younger) for 9 years. Some rough spots but every relationship has those.

It isn't always about what you have in common in the beginning of a relationship. It's how well you get along and make your own things in common with each other over time.

  11. <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

Mr Sabot,I will make it my business if some drunk annoys me because he can't control himself, when there are a bunch of drinkers drinking together, there are usually one or two who go off the rails. (pun intended).

Fine, answer the OPs question and start a thread about another topic if you feel so strongly about it.

Drunks annoy you, posters who can't stick to a topic annoy many of the readers.

  12. I've always been able to find it on these holidays. You may not be able to go to your favorite drinking hole but you should be able to sit and have a drink somewhere. However, it may be served in a coffee cup. Usually no check bins either, pay as you go. However, not sure how the current political situation will affect all this.

  13. We are on 2 floors, you can't miss us.

Apart form the fact that there's no Thaivisa sign there yet... How will we recognise the place? Or is it the only 2 floor bar / restaurant type place in the area, i.e. is it obvious enough?

It's the first venue on the left side, you can't miss it. Big Thaivisa light signs coming up next week.

The first venue on the left side is New Wave that just recently moved from the right side.
