  1. I picked up a package of cheese that said Premium Mainland quality "Vintage" an extra sharp mature cheddar with a crumbly texture. It says it is aged 18 months.

It is without a doubt the best cheese I have tasted in Thailand and a very reputable product in any country.

My personal favourite too kerryk. :o

In Pattaya you can buy it at Carrefour, Foodland, Friendship, and Tops.

Mainland Cheddar was available most everywhere in BKK until recently - however, seems to have disappeared. Anyone seen it lately?

Actually no... not in Pattaya anyway.

I went looking yesterday and could not find any in town.

    :D

I must admit...I didn't try Tesco Lotus though.

Lotus (Rama IV) has a supply; however, it was 'packed in December - expires Sept.' It is quite old. I suspect this is just the remainder quantity and it too will not be replenished. Perhaps the distributor has stopped importing it as Tops, Villa, etc. formerly stocked large quantities and none can be found there now.

  3. Went to Taco Loco on Silom today. Great guys from California. Good prices, generous portions, well above average taste-wise, friendly, clean joint. They don't have a super-duper hot sauce though. Opens late too. Nice thing is that it's in a food-court so if you have friends that don't want to eat fast-Cali-Mexican, there are plenty of other options.

    Where on Silom?

  4. Can anyone reccomend a hotel close to the BTS that is around 600 baht per night? Not looking for anything fancy but would like a safe place to leave my stuff while Im out shopping.

    Thanks

Opera Hotel; Petchburi Soi 11; Around 700b and 6 minute walk to BTS

  5. Thanks Skipper!

Finally someone who understood my question and contributes to 'Bangkok Restaurants'

    Well appreciated!

I agree, thanks for taking the time, I think I will try some of these out pretty soon.

    Good Luck

OK, I have some cheap indoor Thai restaurant suggestions:

Sukhumvit, just east of Soi 24, same side as Emporium. A little place called Mango Rain. Lunch menu is really cheap, food is good. Service so-so, but it's so small you get the attention of anyone quickly.

If you are near Pantip Plaza, on Petchburi just west of Pantip, there is a restaurant at the bottom of the stairs for the overhead crossover called @roi.com (I know, weird). This is phenomenally cheap. Long-necked Pepsi is 10 baht and you get the whole bottle. I routinely have a meal, two soft drinks for under 100 baht. And I finish off everything. Service is good.

Finally, for those venturing beyond Phrom Phong, the Sefaah restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 55 (Thong Lo Skytrain station) on the second floor is very good. Again, pretty cheap. It's across from Thong Lo Soi 1. Service is again so-so, but a bigger problem since it's a large space.

I'd appreciate any suggestions for Thai food indoors in the Thong Lo area, as I just moved there. Apart from the hundred or so Japanese restaurants (don't the Japanese ever eat enything else?).

Roi.com is by the foot bridge near the First Hotel, not the one by Pantip.

  6. I live in the same area, but using TRUE ADSL (not TOT). Quite happy with the service overall. I have a 140 Sq. Mtr. condo (similar construction to yours) and have 100% Wi-Fi coverage with one hub. Signal strength varies depending on distance & hub placement, but penetration through one or two such walls works (I recommend a Linksys or D-Link hub, although I have a 3-Com, which seems to be a bit weaker signal than the others).

  7. Agreed, Paragon's is a bit loud and the atmosphere doesn't warrent the price you pay. Has anyone been to the food court on the ground floor of Central Chid Lom? Quite a strange set up, in that alot of the dishes are displayed pre-cooked in plastic containers which you then select and warm up. There is a great selection there and you can sit outside on a veranda area which is quite nice. The middle Eastern/Lebonese food there is particularly nice.

Although not exactly a 'high-end' food court, I have tried it and the food is quite nice. Will have to try the Lebonese.

  8. I like foodloft and the one in Empo, I don't like Paragon's, it is too noisy and frantic

I agree completly - One at Paragon is poorly placed and designed. Noisy, tables too close to each other, and poor ambiance. 5th Avenue and Emporium are much better.
