  1. Does anyone know where I can get new parts to build a VW engine, I don't really want to import them from the states if they are available here.

My mechanic that is fixing the rusty floor pans and painting the car says that a lot of parts can be had here but when I ask about the engine he wants to know why I want a larger engine.(uses more fuel). My 68 RHD Beetle has a 1285cc motor in it now and as far as I can determine that is what it had in it when it was registeed here in 1986. These came with 1500cc engines from the factory in '68 not sure why it has the 1285 now, maybe it was cheaper to register with the smaller engine.

I cannot find any english language forums on classic vw's in thailand so getting info from them is pretty difficult. I have a phone number for a Mr Pratak of VWshowtime but only get a recorded message when I call. Their website does not show any engine cases, heads and piston/cylinders.

  2. I guess I will just rebuild a classic VW Beetle. As stated above you need a a donor care to build this on and the Westfield has its own chassis. So it looks like a lost cause to me. Still it would have been fun if I were just going to race it at the Bira track.

  3. The Westfield lotus 7 (SE) uses a Nissan SR20DE or SR20DET from s13, s14. I do plan on keeping it legal and was advised that I should keep all receipts for everything that goes on the vehicle to prove that VAT was paid and any duties paid. Also that it would take about 200,000 Baht to register, seems stiff and might involve somebody's pocket getting stuffed (something I would rather not do).

  4. Thank-you again Stinrgray. When you say kit cars do you mean assembly or sales of kits. I would prefer to buy the kit and do the assembly myself as I have alot of time on my hands. I will not enter into this unless I can be assured of getting it registered. Thairung does alot of body mods to Isuzu and Toyota vehicles and gets them registered, so it must be possible. Look at all of the vehicles with Toyota or Isuzu motors in them on the road, or look at the vehicles with the Iron Buffalo motor installed and on the road.

  5. I just want to do a 5 liter fuel injected with automatic gear box, nothing really wild but still 250 to 350 horse power. I have always wanted to build a car and I have nothing but time on my hands so why not. I have rebuilt engines and cars and found it enjoyable so when can iI get started.

  6. Anybody having any luck finding bottles of spices in Issan (Ubon). I am looking for coriander(whole or ground) caraway seeds, and Fennel seeds. I am going to make my own Italian Sausage mild and spicy.

You would think that there would be a store in town that specializes in spices from all over. Thai food is spicy but they use just basic ingrediants and chili peppers dried or fresh.

  7. Hey bufaloe

I was stationed at Ubon from '73-'74 and Udorn from '68-'69 and now live in Det Udom, 40k south of Ubon Ratchatani. Been here for 2 years now. I have an American friend. living in Ban Nong Yau, that was at Ubon in '72 and has been here 7+ years. We are both retired Air Force.

  8. Some of the PAD have been cleared of charges related to the occupation of Government House. This was reported in the Bangkok Post, it seems that they are no longer occupying government house so the charges were dropped. I guess I can use the same defense for a DUI or Bank robbery. I am not doing the crime at the present time so drop the charges.

  9. If you have been on a retirement visa Non Imm O-A that was valid for one year you will be changing to a Non Imm O and extension based on marriage to a Thai.

    You will need two (2) copies of everything;

    application form TM-7

Passport with copies of of photo page, and a copy of valid Non Imm visa.

Copy of wives ID card and House registration

Copy of Marriage license it will need to be translated if its not a Thai license

Birth certificate of children (if any)

Thai bank statement for three months and letter from bank verifing deposit for 90 days (better safe than sorry) 60 days may work this year only

Extras may be requested such as pictures and map but I was never asked for them at Phibun Mangsahan Immigration

My handout from Immigration also states a medical certificate but I have never had to provide one.

Once Immigration accepts this they will need you to go to your local police department for an interview with wife and witnesses, and Puyai Bahn. I was given a letter to take to police department that instructed then to do the interviews, but a friend was called by the police department to come in for the interview. This is for the first year only.

You should get a stamp in your pasport for 30 days when you return they will give you the year extension.

    Good luck

  10. I don't want to highjack your post but this is a great idea. We meet every Monday in Ubon for lunch ( 12-16 expats plus wives g/f's) and find it refreshing. Everyone enjoys the time together and we rotate our meeting places as people make suggestions. The Hotel Lytong has a lunch buffee and can accomodate us most of the time. Enjoy your time together.

  11. ubonjoe and oceano,

I agree with your points, but getting a Thai to treat their women equally under the law is going to be difficult. We have police orders that do not agree with Thai law. Immigration officers that we have to deal with cannot agree on how to interpet (sp) the police orders as written. Not to mention the problems we have with different offices around the country and how they apply the law or what they require as documentation from office to office.

I am married to a Thai and have been for over 40 years we are living in Thailand now. All of our income comes from my retirement income and I do not at the present time have any problem meeting the income requirement of 40K month or 400K in the bank. I have a home here and pay my utilities promptly every month. Yet I cannot apply for PR as I do not pay taxes in Thailand. I help support other family members with education monies and medical expenses to insure that they are getting the best education and treatment as possible. My wife has a maid that we pay well and consider her as a family member and for this she is vary loyal and appreciative.

You both should look at the Bangkok post for 12/29, Outlook section, and see how they treat their own people and apply their own citizenship laws. Its a disgrace and I believe they will fight us tooth and nail on any argument for change and will pick and choose any part of the law even out of context in their judgement against us. This is worth the effort to get it to the courts and see where it goes. Hopefully we will get permanent residence like that which is granted to wives and husbands of US citizens, the Green Card, and a chance to earn an income in Thailand if we so desire. I do not think we are talking about millions of Thai with foreign spouses, possibly tens of thousands.

  12. I just dont get it. PAD blocks airport and causes untold disruption and distress yet thet now win by having their own PM.

I thought that the democrats were a minority in the parliament so how can a PAD man get the PM's job.

Its no wonder that the red shirts are upset.

The PPP was a minority in the parliament too.

And calling a democrat leader for PADs man is misleading. Just because they don't hate him doesn't mean they love him. He can still erupt their anger in many ways.

tawp thee ppp had 233 vs 167 mp's not enough for a majority but they had the first crack at forming an alliance please get your facts straight

  13. US and Thai passport at airport check-in, in Los Angeles, this will show airlines that she does not need a visa on one way ticket. Use the Thai passport on the Thai immigration entry and exit, this way she will not have to have a visa for Thailand. Us passport and Thai passport at airport/airline check-in in Thailand will show that she can travel back to USA without restrictions. Depart Thailand with Thai passport at immigration check point Its that easy..

  14. My wife and I were married in Jan 1969 and I was transferred to RAF Greenham Common, England in April, She arrived in June 1969 and with the constant drizzle year round we were both cold from the damp climate and many nights we curled up under the blankets for warmth. We had storage heaters that used electricity (off peak on a shilling meter) and gave off vary little heat during the remainder of the day. Both of us had cold feet but I remember her cold nose in the middle of my back on many occasions in the middle of the night. We dressed warm when we went out and she eventually learned how to enjoy the warm days to the fullest. I think the cold drizzle of rain was the worst as it never seemed to stop. Our daughter was born on the 20th of Nov '69 and keept us home and out of the cold most of the time. I did not make much money then as a young Airman so we could not go out often. When it snowed for the first time we had some fun outdoors playing in the snow. We did adapt some to the weather and after four years were reassigned to Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base and boy was it hot. We spent 4 weeks in California befor going to Thailand where she finally got to meet my family they fell in love with her and our talkative 3 year old daughter. They were all crying when we left for Thailand not knowing when we would return as I had planned on staying as long as they would let me extend for, which ended up being 18 months as the Vietnam war was winding down and we were turning the base back over to the Thai Air Force. We went to Texas for a year of training where our son was born. If you do not like the weather in Texas wait 30 mins. and it will change. We were in the middle of the Tornado Ally at Whichta Falls, Tx and living in a mobile home park. Not a good place for sleep with all of the tornado alerts and warnings on T.V. in the evenings. Gosh I did not mean to highjack this post with our life story. We are now living in Thailand and the children and grand children are in California.

  15. This just in the police have reported that the PAD are paying their protesters and guards(500 Baht) The have also confiscated weapons from the PAD and are showing them on Thai TV now. I can't wait for the PAD supporters to deny these reports. Wake up guys the PAD have only one goal and they will not negotiate on this with anyone. The PM must resign and the PPP must leave. So you can see that no matter who tries to talk with Sondhi or his cronies they will not concede and only violence will end this siege I am sorry to admit.
