I went to my bank today (KBank) to find out how I could convert my baht to USD and wire transfer the USD to my bank in America. No Can Do...said the manager. I was told they have no records of the wire transfers I made with SWIFT from the US to Thailand. The total amount is about 1,750,000 baht. The kind man at the bank suggested that I buy bank notes ($100 bills) at the currency exchange window and when I converted the entire amount I could put the money in my pocket and fly with it to America. Nice...
I wan't to leave the Land of Smiles and move back to the US.....Hawaii. How can I get my money out of here ? Do I buy cashiers checks in Thai Baht and send them to my bank in the US (Bank of America) or what ? I am totally confused. I guess I didn't read the sign that said "Once we have your money in Thailand...You can't get it back in Dollars".
What's the plan ????
Thanks !!
I am having the same problem. I swifted money directly on the account of my stock broker two years ago and he is now unable to provide me tortorsam for those amounts, so I cannot wire them out country.
I HOPE MY CASE AND YOURS CAN BE OF SOME ADVICE TO CRAZY PEOPLE WHO THINK OF INVESTING HERE.

Age....near 60
Financial situation........60kbhatt/mo pension
i should have mentioned that in my earlier post.
anyone know of the expat situation in Cambodia or Vietnam??
In Cambodia you can stay as long as you want just paying $ 25 per month for a business visa.
The problem is the place is much less confortable then Thailand. And you cannot even own a condo there .

I'd like to live in Singapore.
One Singha can there costs 3.35 S$. A Geylang chick asks 120 S$.
I guess Thailand is way cheaper, even taking into account the VISA trips costs.

Wow! Last time Consumer Confidence was this bad the SET proceeded to rise more than 150%.
But there was also Thaksin in charge, not these lacklustre barrack boys...
With these guys once you hit bottom you do not bounce back, you just start digging....

Pattaya is dead ? Try to cross Tappraya Road here in front of View Talay....try to find a baht bus going to South Pattaya that is not packed....go to Noon RistoranTino and see if you can find a free table....perhaps some of the "resident tourists" have packed but they got replaced by the Russian cheap fortnight hordes.

I need to dispatch document to Switzerland.Just a 20gr letter.
Are there express couriers in Pattaya ? UPS or some other who can do the job in 3/4 days ?
Does Post Office offer a reliable service ? An airmail express registered letter how many days takes to arrive in Switzerland ? Does Prioritaire post exist here ?

7. Was iTV already in such great debt during the period that Shin was the owner of iTV ?
No, not at all, they made quite nice profits in later years - after they cut the concession payments and introduced game shows and other enerntainment programs.
Profits for itv were:
2002 -770.15 million baht
2003 -660.44 million baht
2004 204.56 million baht
2005 679.11 million baht
2006 364.40 million baht
total loss for last 5 years = - 152.15 million baht
at last someone who actually shows the figures.
All the statements that ITV was a "money machine" now appear for what they are: BULLSHIT !
At 30.09.2006 ITV has RETAINED LOSSES for 3,158 MILLION BAHT !
Apart the two latest years, IT NEVER WAS A PROFITABLE BUSINESS !
Increasing the concession fee and asking absurd fines for previous "concession infringments" is plain sadistic persecution of previous Shinawatra and now Temasek assets.

Muslim fundamentalists will keep chipping away at the freedom of the Thai people until, one day, your avarage Thai will awake to the 5:00am call to prayer.
Actually in Batam the first prayer was at 4.30am....every morning and shouted quite loud (it never failed to wake me )

Wasan was a bad boy, never lending a hand with the chores and only interested in computer games.
Wasan had told Subin that he would become a spirit medium, boasting he was immortal and could not be injured by knives.
another Thai happy family ruined by those wicked computer games.... ...sorry cannot stay to comment any further, I have a Galactic Civilization 2 game with ultra-huge galaxy settings to finish...see in a few months, hope nobody misses me.

I am simply astonished the report puts Zitromax among the "forbidden" drugs list.
I wonder if the policeman who wrote the report knows for what disease it is.
I guess he has never used it in his life (550 baht a box !)and probably is cronically clamydia infected

Maybe an educated guess, maybe gossip...
but a friend married to a Thai says there's probably going to be more extremist trouble, more government trouble, and more farang-violence in Thailand.
He also said the Baht will crash.
Anyone agree?
He said I shouldn't go there.
I fully agree.

contribute
the idea a Thai man might ever "contribute" to something sounds quite hylarious to me.
-
What would you do?
I would sell the company or even better close it down so the Thai workers get all fired.
It's definitively retribution time for this "people".

I wonder how can they expect ITV to pay 100 billion baht. The net equity of the company is just 4 billion baht. Also there is no reason for such a punitive fine, considering ITV has almost always closed its balances losing money.
The hatred for Thaksin and now for Singapore's Temasek has really blinded the already slow minds of this government. Once ITV signal will disappear, their already sinking popularity will get a further deep dive for sure.

Really, I am quite astonished there was still an inflow....if I were the Singaporeans, would OUTFLOW everything double quick.....

I note that many of the threads carrying these comments have undertones of insecurity, that you perhaps have to marry a Thai in order to justify a long stay, represent a multi-national or carry special qualifications. How much of this is true?
I read a great deal of useful posts in the board, many of them however mentioning the annoying visa regulations, permission to work etc. and would appreciate some input as I am due soon for a pension and thinking on how and where to move. This would not necessarily have to be LOS but at least somewhere with warmer winters and LOS qualifies on that front. I am already an expat, single, a Brit living in Germany but my pension is not going to buy me much luxury if I retire here, I've always worked freelance. My winter heating bills alone here would make a big hole in the average state pension and my savings.
I could work on, perhaps part time, as a translator elsewhere in the world but I don't know the local position in LOS regarding working as my many visits there were strictly tourism, apart from one long stay many years ago and I was aware then that I was working illegally. I have teaching experience in English, French, German and Spanish, quite unrelated to TEFL etc. for military units, commercial concerns and technical institutes, which I might be able to adapt to local demand. During my time in the north of Thailand and more recently in Phuket, I came across Europeans teaching English in Thai schools or attending teaching courses. Although I know nothing about Thai teaching standards, I think many of these would not meet German standards as diploma level is the norm here.
BTW, I love the board, I have many a good chuckle when I need a break from translating.
Visa have become a real pain in the ass. What you save on heating, you will probably end spending for air tickets and hotel rooms while peregrinating to beg tourist visa in neighbouring countries. You will definitevely save money on hookers, anyway.
A last advice: avoid beach chairs, and if you are really tired and need to sit on one, always remember to pay the chair owner before leaving.

Two Russian women killed at Jomthien beach
police investigators believed that the Russian tourists probably quarreled severely with a beach chair concessionnaire which led to the later violence.
So if you sit five minutes on a beach chair and forget to pay the owner you get shot now...unforgettable Thailand, for sure ...well Immigration will be glad to have 2 less visa to extend

In the next days I have to go to Singapore. As my third visa exemption on arrival is near its expire date, I thought to ask for a tourist visa, single entry 60 days + 30 extension at the local Thai Embassy. Are they issuing tourist visas or have they joined the policy of Yangoon, Manila and Phnom Pehn ? How much time does it take to have the visa processed ? If you go in the morning of tuesday 12 Feb can you collect it in the afternoon of wednesday 13 ? Are there any holydays on such days ?
