  1. Having a negotiated fare and agreed upon in my book, is fair and square. Meter or no meters. But passenger (OP's hubby) agreed fare includes the toll fees. So driver deviates and not pay for the toll. Then pax wants to deduct the toll fee from the total fare. And from then, hence this posting from kung_i about threatening behavior from taxi driver. So is this about the driver's attitude or about the toll fee.

Having said these, imho, OP shouldn't be ranting over the toll fee. Perhaps, wrong time wrong place and wrong taxi driver. :o

  2. Phone fails in Bangkok then works on return home!

    Here's the story:

I flew to Bangkok for 3 days in order to get paperwork allowing marriage. While there I get a text from the fiance asking why she can't call me. I try to call her but can't. The phone seems to reset. I can't call anyone. I try calling my phone from my friend's but can't. I try my DTAC sim in my friends Nokia and that works: I can make and receive calls. I try my friend's AIS sim in my LG KG200 and that doesn't work. For 3 days my phone can send and receive texts but can't make calls.

When I try to call it says "Calling" as normal while trying to connect then, when the other phone should start ringing and my phone say "Alerting", it just powers off as if the battery had become disconnected. After about 15 seconds it lights up again and says "Searching" for a signal and is soon back to normal but without the song and dance of a regular power on. Signal strength was good and battery good. I even tried it while plugged into the charger with the same result.

When I got to the new BKK airport to fly home the phone started working normally again and has been fine since. As you can imagine, this is a bit hard for the Mrs to believe.

    Questions:

    1. Anyone had this happen to them or heard of this happen to anyone else?

    2. Any of you tech wizzes have any idea how this could happen?

I am not a tech wiz, but it did happened to me too. Display indicates "calling" but actually not. But I am using a PDA phone, so with a phone call to technical support, I just needed to re-boot the phone. So if you're using a PDA phone, just re-boot the software.

  3. Sorry but I haven’t the time to type the whole article out from the Aug.3rd issue of the Bangkok Post. The headline to the article was ‘Matichon reporter shot dead at home’. This guy was reporting on issues that were upsetting local politicians and high ranking government officials. The police are not sure if it was the responsibility of the government official or the politicians as they were two separate groups it seems. Either way it is a very bad situation that only seemed to warrant two small columns on page 3.

Today’s Bangkok Post had two articles in the ‘Post Bag’ section from members of the public about the media silence after the first article a couple of days ago. My wife hadn’t read anything about it in the Thai papers.

With little further evidence or witness reports it is possible that it never happened, or that the actual ‘Post Bag’ article was sent in by some mischievous individual. Who knows?

Yeah, Matichon reporter shot and killed. It seems might be politically connected.

A reporter for Matichon newspaper was shot dead while cooking at his home on Friday in what the Thai Journalists Association (TJA) is calling a blatant attempt to silence the media. Athiwat Chainurat, 48, was alone when a gunman shot him in the head, back and stomach. The attack took place about 9pm. Police collected four spent casings from the scene.

  4. ^^ What it really says is
The Chart Thai party said Mr Sarochakrit was no longer a party member, as he had left to join the Democrat party.
    However, earlier in the article
Police arrested Sarochakrit Prom-aksorn, 56, after he slammed his car into the PAD's barricades at Makkhawan Rangsan bridge in Dusit district about 3 am yesterday. The man, who wore a bullet-proof vest, appeared drunk. Three pistols, a shotgun and rounds of ammunition were found hidden in his vehicle. A licence to practise law, a Chart Thai party jacket and a card showing he was a member of the Chart Thai party were also found.
    Regards

So he is a member of the democrat party :D

Yes, one man one word. :o

Bad service, well no service i guess.

Not right of Air Asia. But out of curiosity, what was the reason/s given ?

  8. Of all of these, from what you say, the caffeine is the most important as your intake is very excessive. My BP would be through the roof if I consumed even half the coffee you do. Cut your 20 cups down to 10 immediately and then continue cutting gradually each day until you are down to no more than 2 cups, or switch to tea.

Some teas have just as much caffeine as coffee.

    So do many other drinks.

The best drink to replace the coffee is water.

This ,although mainly American drinks, is an interesting comparison.

    Cheers

Yes, that caffeine stuff. Even though I drinked only three cups of coffee each morning, I follow-up thru with 2 glasses of water. Not immediately though, but within an hour.

  10. I can withdraw 200k from Atm Siam commercial bank in one day anyone can if you have the money in your act .

When they set your acct up with a 20k limit perday you can change limit to 200k yourself changing limit in the ATM machine .

    JB

Some ATMs have a limit *per transaction* that has nothing to do with the limit that you set on your account. Other times, the ATM may just be getting low on scrip.

I believe that my US bank will go as high as 3000 USD/day cash withdrawal on ATM card...perhaps higher if you request it.

Many US banks default your card to a 200 USD/day limit.

If anyone banks with siam commercial bank and the acct is set up limit 20k per day they can change the limit themselves to any limit upto 200k per day using the atm machine to change the limit . I know because this is what i did myself .

    JB

My withdrawal limit is 20 K per day set by the bank when I opened my Siam Com Bank acc 3 years ago. I was told then by the bank officer that I would need to write in (apply for) to the bank branch if I wanted a higher limit, but still set at max 200 K.

If changing the limit can be done at the Atm, then it defies logic at setting a limit. However, I am off to the bank tomorrow, so.......... :o

  11. Just read this in BP's postbag. Anyone heard anything on this ?

    Murder in Bangkok

On July 24 at about 5.30pm, I witnessed an event in Bangkok that has left me shaken. It has changed the way I view Thailand.

It was a double shooting and a possible murder cover-up. I say "possible murder" because uniformed police were involved and I can't be certain the bodies were dead, but judging from the number of shots heard, the amount of blood and the lack of movement from the bodies, I assume they were dead.

  12. I am not from the US, but it would increase my respect for the country if they elected Obama. I believe that on the world stage it would greatly improve their image too, but I have a feeling that they will go with old-man-McCain.

So you are taking the bite ? This again has nothing to do with Thailand. Not in a single bit. If Jingthing felt that the US is the driving force that determines the world's fate, including Thailands', that is his opinion. But I find no justification why a presidential election in the US could find it's place in TV.

    This is imho :o

  13. On request:

Before the last Australian election, I started a thread asking who people would prefer to win - Rudd or Howard.

I actually posted it in retaliation to a similar thread about the British election which was allowed to run.

Mine was promptly closed as not relevent to Thailand.

Perhaps someone could explain to me why these sort of threads are treated in different ways?

However, I will always retain my sense of humour no matter what the outcome. :D :D

Yeah ! But I am not gonna comment on moderations by the mods here. But your avatar looks more like a frog than a croc to me. No, I am not attempting any sarcasism. :o

  14. So anything to do with the USA, needs to be posted here cause it has the "biggest economy in the world". That somehow it would be related ? Yeah sure, Zimbadwee would be related somehow. Give me a break. Go find a forum with a specific relations to the US to juice

No. The different candidates and parties have different attitudes on free trade policies. Do you ever read the Thai press on economics? The impact of the AMERICAN economy is mentioned constantly. As the USA is the biggest trading partner to Thailand, this isn't a surprise really. I think some people just can't deal with the fact that the USA is still a powerful, important country and the president of the United States is still the most powerful and important person on the planet.

That is what you think and perceived. By no means the rest of the world thinks likewise. To each their own.

  15. Sorry, other than the original post with its somewhat ambiguous reference to Thailand, the OP's second post has nothing to do with Thailand, although a nice attempt at making relevant at the very end.

The USA has the biggest economy in the world. It is Thailand's top trading partner. Some of the people reacting to the USA's presidents image are indeed, Thai. I think I have justified this to death. If the mods want to close, they may, but I think they are wrong.

I was talking to a Thai lawyer a while back. He told me he found the idea of a black man as US president disturbing.

So anything to do with the USA, needs to be posted here cause it has the "biggest economy in the world". That somehow it would be related ? Yeah sure, Zimbadwee would be related somehow. Give me a break. Go find a forum with a specific relations to the US to juice.

  16. You should look at the news again.... No one! was killed...

I did, Bangkok Post story is still there

"The man who died was a PAD security guard. He had suffered an axe blow to the head, according to Veera Somkwamkid, a PAD ally."

If the government is caught downplaying the murder as if it never happened, I won't be surprised at all. If no one died, I expect PAD, the Nation, Bangkok Post, ASTV, Manager and so on to publish clarifications and correction of their earlier reports.

    So far there are none.

Well, read again. Udon governor Supoj denied that anyone was killed. Who to believe ? We should allow time for the press to get their act together before jumping up and down.
