  1. I am not into all these political manoveures. Who is right and wrong, who is "vote buying" and who is corrupted. But the current administration are elected democratically, (thai style), hence any removal of these government should be in the same manner, at the ballot boxes.

My TGF, who is an isaan lady of 43, has never heard of anyone that she knows that has been paid to vote for a certain party.

So what is "vote buying" ? A small token of bht 100 is sufficient to buy a voter's heart ? Or is it just a small way of re-imbursing the cost that would be incurred by the voter, by way of transportation etc. Perhaps it is only to encourage voters to vote. Cause without their vote, it would not be "democratic".

So now the people have voted. And the PPP with it's co-allition parties are in power. Can they lead and run the country, well we know that don't we. Military coup to overthrow an elected government ? When is it going to end? It must be with election at the ballot boxes. Vote buying or not, it is up to Thais whether they wishes to be bought or not. It is their country and it is their life. I am sure they knows what's best for their well-being and their children.

Seeing Samak & co in action, well, I hate to say this, bring on Thaksin. At least he can lead and run the country.

  2. the last time that I flipped a finger at my tgf after a big quarrel, she gave me a hard punch on me back! I could see the anger on her face. She said and warned, never never do that again in Thailand, to anyone! Well, I learned. :o

  3. My girlfriend has just temporally joined her grandfathers Wat.He is the Abbot there.

As late as yesterday she was going to stay with a community of nuns about 10 kilos from the Wat.For some reason this morning when I phoned her,she instead is staying at her grandfathers Wat.I prefer this as I know him quite well and suggested it to her but she said cannot.

She tells me she is staying for 9 days maybe 12 days and is studying from books.I am restricted what I can say to her and have to be very correct and proper. Her grandfather has been very seriously ill and only recently recovered he is in his eighties and has been a monk for 40 plus years.

Anyone know what is involved and is this similar to boys and indeed men wearing the saffron robes for short periods?

Nothing to concern yourself here. It is pretty common but not like everyone is doing it. It is sort of a relieve from the everyday stress of living. To seek a momentarily divine. That's all. My tgf's father did that too, but told his family it will only be for a month, but he has been in the temple for six months now. I guessed he pretty much like it there more than back at home with the wife. :o

    What's up Doc ? :o

  5. Is there something about your appreance or dress that might cause any reaction from a Thai?

I don't understand your question here. What has appearance or dress got to do with a simple question to the sales assistant like OP has a sore throat and needs to purchase a remedy for that. ? :o

IMHO, i sensed certain anti-farang elements among some locals.

  6. i have not entirely read all the postings. However, if a citizen leaving his/her home country, there is no need for exit/entry stamp Imm only needs to scan your passport. Stamping of exit/entry onto passport only applicable when you enters/exit a foreign country, (hence the imm queue for foreign or local passport holders). Simply put, leaving or entering your home country, NO STAMPS. BUT SCANNED!

Check-in counters at the airlines, only meant you have checked in for your flight. At no time, it is taken to construed that you have left the country. Stand corrected though I am sure I am right.

  7. Fire at Myanmar embassy destroys one floor of consular offices; no injuries reported

BANGKOK: -- An early morning fire at the Myanmar embassy during the Thai capital's rush hour disrupted traffic for several hours and destroyed the second floor of the Myanmar's embassy in consular offices Monday.

The blaze that engulfed the second floor of the two-storey building in the embassy compound on Sathorn

Road, was under control in 30 minutes. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

No one was injured in the incident as the fire broke out early in the morning before office hours, but the office completely destroyed.

Visa applicants queued at 7am awaiting the opening of the consular offices at 8am were set to have

a longer wait due to the embassy's closure. It is not known whether visa applicants passports and

documentation were destryoed in the fire.

One Myanmar national bystander said that when the blaze began the consular officials tried to douse it themselves, and that first fire engine did not arrive until an hour later.

an hour later ? I guessed that they rather it burned to the ground !

  8. Pin could be changed at your whim & fancy at atm machines. but changing pin would not help if your card has been skimmed. A person could simply skimmed your card whilst you are not looking, returned it to you or placed it back at where it was taken, without you realising it.

Like most poster suggested....... closed the account and re-open another with a new atm card. Better safe than sorry.

  9. Does anyone know what time the bridge closes, what time the last bus back from Vientiane is to Nong Khai and if there is alternative transport over the bridge if you miss the last bus - which I heard was quite early?

Last bus from Vientiane to Nongkhai is 18.00. There is one before that at 15.30. Therefore, theoretically you could catch the one at 15.30. But I would suggest you book them in the morning of your departure date.

  10. you all seem to think that the main motive behind the attacks is for the cash

    robbed for 300 baht etc

its not in my opinion, the main motive is that they get to to knock the crap out of a farang and the money is just the icing on the cake

Perhaps they would thought that farangs would have more than that amount with them.

Gutsy boy i might say. Going to grow up as a fine lad.

  12. Are we supposed to feel any sympathy for this fool?

Is not this the oldest trick in the book...I can't believe anyone still falls for it! Everyone knows you NEVER leave an unknown unmonitored service worker alone in a room in your residence!

I totally agree.. Can you say 'S-T-U-P-I-D' ?????

..and even more stupid if you don't back-up your phone and PC somewhere like on DVDs or an extrenal hard drive...duhhhhh

Yes, now that sure reminded me. Thanks. :o

  13. When you constrast the Phuket Forum with other TV forums it is a big shock. Phuket people seem to enjoy calling each other bad names and bad mouthing each other wihich serves no purpose.

The TF Forum is meant to be informative and constructive and useful to everyone. If you don't have something nice to say then why say it in public.

It gets boring to read when people use the forum for the above reasons.

Just a thought, if you don't agree don't reply.

KEEP THE GARBAGE OFF THE FORUM!

If everyone agrees, then where is the point of having a discussion forum. All posts would read like "i agree" "i agree with you" "you said it right" "absolutely correct".........etc etc :o and it is everybody's right to post a reply to you and i do not agree.

  14. I bought a fan for the department store in airport plaza and it exploded. No jokes, the blades flew off and little shards of plastic flew all over the room. Only about 2 months old, never heard of such a thing. My wife was skrewing at me for coming home late mow mak an i joked it was her extreem negative energy output that caused it. any one else had this happen?

Yeah it happened to me too. Just need to tighten the knob that held the turning blades.

  15. Note: I have also tried some mirror sites but so far none of them seem to work...is it blocked or something?

I am not too sure, but this could be the reason........... if your internet connection does not allow active x content to run, then you may have a problem. If this is the case, did you notice a "security advise/warning" that appears just below the tool bars? (on top of windows) ? If there is , left click on it and sub menu appears where you click on "allow active x".

Like I said, I am not sure this is the problem or not. Hope it helps.

  16. are the fake cops lurking outside the immigration exists still a bother? i dont smoke but will be carrying a bottle of whisky. no smokes.

i dont want any dodgy cop going thru my bag where they might drop something in and give me a hassle and extort money. is it acceptable to ask them to go back thru the entrnace and have my bag ripped up by customs there?? no matter even if you are totally clean the beggar cops will beg money off you becasue thats the way thai bureaucratic class is. hey, give us money for NOT putting a joint in your bag.

    thanks

dun tink tu mutt an orso dun werely tu mutt, u weel be allight. :o

  17. I like the dirt roads, shacks that the locals call home (which they live happily in it). It reminds me of my home country 40 years ago. The laid back life here (udon and Nongkhai, as far as i am concerned). Well, life is peaceful here in the upper NE.
