  1. The second picture in lopburi3's post is called a "Union PVC" by the Thais. You can get specs on the various sizes on the Thai Pipe Industry website.

More commonly used are the metal ones attached to PVC fittings. The galvanized ones are usually poor quality but steam fittings are better. (Union s-team dang in Thai). They are available at all hardware stores.

  2. I am looking to buy TRS salt for my pool - I live near Jomtien / Pattaya.

I was told this salt has an active ingredient making it a sought after additive other than other salts - can anyone elaborate bout this please. ? - I am curious to know how one sdalt is any different than another (?)

salt for pool chlorination should be refined salt and not what is called "industrial salt". any salt you buy here should be OK for your pool. there's no such think like an active ingredient in "TSR salt". TSR stands for the company that produces and markets salt, namely "Thai Refined Salt, Company Ltd."

TRS salt is solution mined from a wellfield near Phimai. The brine passes through a vacuum distillation process to produce very pure salt. The technology is mostly German although the ownership of the company is Thai/Japanese/Belgian. Current annual production is around 1.5 million tonnes.

Salt from the solar evaporation of seawater in places like Samut Sakhon is not of the same purity.

  3. I counted Ian as a good mate and we stayed in regular contact. A giant of a man in so many ways, he will be missed by many.

Is it OK to paste a link to his Facebook page? It tells a lot about him.

  4. Place had character, added to the local color of Bangkok. It's really too bad it's gone.

If you want a trip down bar memory lane, then check out "The Old Office" in Pat Pong. It is most likely the oldest bar still in existents in Bangkok. The owner is in her 60's and still remember GI's drinking at her bar. Worth a drink and just enjoy the old interior decoration and pictures.

The bar is about 50 years old and started out as the "The New Office", but changes names later.

There was a bar in Patpong 2 throughout the 70s called "The Other Office". I don't ever remember seeing too many GIs there, it was popular with expat construction workers though. It had a one room massage parlor on the right on the way in - always had dust in the bath tub, I don't think there were too many actual massages going on.

Is that the Davy Jones who hung out at the Hash Pub all the time?

  6. I have done the trip scores of times and the route you have indicated is the best and fastest I have found. Where the road turns off east of Phu Reua and intersects with Highway 201 south of Loei is at a town called Wang Saphung. That part can be a bit confusing if it is your first time as can be the section from Highway 11 to Chattrakarn. I would count on doing the trip in less than 8 hours in any conditions.

  7. As it is an Embassy car, or perhaps a privately owned car of an Embassy staff member, Import duty is not an issue. The Diplomatic plate is clearly visible.

Unless the system has changed, the Embassy owning the vehicle can be identified by the two small numerals on the left. I can't pick it from the photo but I think the Australian Embassy is 04 (it runs in alphabetic order, US is 86?).. The four numerals to the right indicate the rank at the Embassy - Ambassador 0001 and so forth. The car in the picture is a high number so I am guessing it is general motor pool or privately owned diplomatic staff.

The first vehicle I drove in Thailand was a HR ute and then graduated to 186 Premier sedans.

Back in the day, Asoke Motors were the Holden agents and the wife of the owner was Australian. Through some slick marketing, the Holden was the prestige car of choice for Thais and the Benz was considered only used by nouveau-riche Chinese. All the Holden air conditioners were after market installations and caused big problems, not only with the A/C but engine overheating.

A bunch of Holdens were imported for use on SMEC projects building, mostly east-west, highways. This was considered more difficult as they always crossed mountain ranges. These were all left with the Highways Department but there a fewer survivors every year.

  8. BTW unless anyone knows better, 'Gypsy' got his name as he has had more restaurants in more locations than any other Farang in Chiang Mai. Anyone remember The Grill Station opposite the Porn Ping hotel?

So where are all his restaurants now?

The ones I remember before the Grill Station were the Formula 1, very close to where O'Malley's is now; one opposite the Boat on Huay Kaew Road (can't remember the name) and one before them that I think was on Charoen Prathet, somewhere around the Night Bazaar area anyway.

I stayed in a German professional wrestler's hotel in Udon a couple of times. Interesting guy, his trademark was to look like Hulk Hogan. He knew Gypsy back in Germany where the wrestler also owned discos. Apparently Gypsy had some kind of BMW VIP limo service. It seems the nickname preceded him coming to Thailand.

  9. Does anyone here know if the brewing facilities for Chang have been compromised because of the floods?

Chang's big brewery is in Pathumthani, though I think their premises was not actually flooded.

Could be fakes - if you say that was bottled beer. :ermm:

Chang's biggest brewery is at Klong Klung in Kampaeng Phet. Their older, but smaller, brewery is at Bang Bon, north of Ayudhaya. The latter one may have been flooded but both places probably had delivery problems during the flooding. They also took over the old Carlsberg place at Wang Noi but I am not sure they are producing Chang there.

  10. On a separate point why would one use a submersible pump ? I am not sure what purpose this serves for drawing water from a deep well.

It depends on the standing water level of the water in your well. A pump on the surface relies on suction and if the depth to the water level is over about 8 meters, it will not work. A submersible can be sized to be installed at any depth in your well and still pump water to surface.

  11. I have made that trip over 500 times. One and a quarter hours Lampang - Naowarat Bridge. The old highway from Lampang to Hang Chat is 4 lanes and misses all the traffic lights in Lampang on Highway 1/11. Pick a time when the factories in Lamphun are not having shift change.

  12. Here, poor AngryParent, slaved for many years teaching thousands of Thai kids. As I am a foreigner, my wife and son will die the day I die, as no pension and all the rights that my family should get esp as I work for the government and 2/3 0f this family is Thai. No similar rights even though I work hard like all other teachers. I work for 1 month or 30 years does not make a difference. The day I die, is the day my Thai wife and son dies.

The above is one of the reasons why I chose the name AngryParent.

You may be overlooking the fact that the majority of Thai workers are not government employees. Very few companies in the private sector have any sort of pension scheme. You may get one-off severance pay if you are fired, but resigning gets you nothing. Many of these people earn less, and work harder, than you..

There are millions of Thais in the same boat as you but their families do not seem to be dropping like flies.

  13. Back in the day, the McKean Institute ran a leprosarium in Chiangmai.

I was friendly with one of the patients and he had a bad habit of sneaking out to go and spend some time with old flames at the hole-in-the-wall places along Kampaeng Din. His favorite line during negotiations was "Well, you can keep the tip".

They didn't think it was very funny either.
