  1. The Queen Vic is still good, Queens Breakfast is around 250baht and Kings Breakfast is around 350-400baht I think. Queens is normally more than enough for me and comes with a pot of Tetleys tea.

I have heard that Chequers bar on Soi 4 does a really good Full English too, but I have not tried it myself yet.

  2. Any idea how much the meter fare would be?

Sent from my XOOM 2 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

To Saphan Thaksin I would think the meter will be around 300-400THB plus toll fees of around 60-80baht. Not sure on the exact figures as I live in Sukhumvit.

Another option if you can't be bothered to argue or negotiate with taxi meters are the AOT limos (the desks are by the luggage carousels or just after customs), they charge 1100 THB into town for a Toyota Camry with tolls included, a little more money than a taxi but a little more comfortable and bypasses any issues of arguing about using meters etc.

  3. 2 years ago I had a multi entry ED visa which worked ideal for me as I work onboard ships and do 10 weeks on / 10 weeks off. The 10 weeks off was always spent in Thailand and the multi ED allowed me to fly straight from the ship with a one way ticket and spend my full leave here without hassle.

I never got questioned once at Swampy coming in by air, just a smile and 90 day stamp each time. I did however once go across to Cambodia for a day trip and upon my return the immigration officer started to question me in Thai. Luckily I could make out that he was asking me if I was a Student so I replied in Thai that I was studying Thai, he then started to ask something else that I could not understand but saw that he was pointing to the income check box on the TM card, I put two and two together and replied in Thai that I was an Engineer onboard a ship, he then said I spoke well and stamped me through which was a big sigh of relief for me!

Don't know if anyone else has encountered anything like this, but may be worth brushing up on a few Thai phrases if you are not so confident with the lingo just incase.

  4. I tried the lamb burger at Shuffle (Rain Hill, Sukhumvit 47) last night and it was very tasty, quite heavily spiced which might not be to everyones liking but a seriously good burger in my opinion. Their rustic burger and original beef burgers both looked very good too. Everything was served hot and all ingredients were crisp and fresh, patties cooked to order which I opted for medium and it was just right. The Kitchen was open view and there was a farang head chef in there running the show. I do like those burgers at El Gouchos too, but think Shuffle may have won my vote now. 375baht for the Lamb burger and 325baht for the beef including fries.

Slightly off topic, but the missus had the pork chop at Shuffle and it was the best pork chop I had ever tasted anywhere let alone BKK, i'll definitely be back to order one!

  5. BE VERY VERY CAREFUL. VERY CAREFUL. Depending on where you are transferring FROM... your bank may use an INTERMEDIATARY BANK so ASK BEFORE YOU SEND. If they use Citibank you will lose BIG TIME and wonder "where has my money gone?"

So if you are in USA and are using CHSE for example, you may send to Kasikorn or Bangkok bank. ASK BEFORE YOU SEND as YOUR bank may decide under private iunternal dealings to send to HSBC in Hong Kong first and then to Thailand so you will lose out 2 ways.

I did this from my Westpac Ozzie bank to Kasikorn. the rates on the day were really favourable but I lost a heap as my bank sent it through Citibank and I had no idea.

I now only send to Bangkok bank as it goes direct adn I get the TT rate of the day AUTOMATICALLY. I also have a FOREIGN CURRENCY ACCOUNT at Bangkok bank so I send OZZIE DOLLARS and I choose when to convert. It is very easy to open.

    Hope this helps

Can the foreign currency account with BKK bank be accessed and fully operated online?

I have been sending GBP or Euros straight to my Bangkok bank acc which works out a decent rate (the TT rate BKK bank are advertising on the day it arrives). Only problem with this method is that it takes about 2 days to arrive here so you have to use a bit of guess work as to weather the fx rate will be going up or down. Sounds like with that Foreign currency Acc, I could then exchange to THB on the day I feel is good and know exactly which rate I am going to get.

  6. When I send money across from my Offshore GBP or Euro accounts, I always send it in GBP or Euros and let my BKK bank do the conversion here in Thailand due to the better rates. It has always been done automatically by Bangkok bank with no questions asked, although I have not sent over 50k yet.

On smaller amounts around 5kGBP I seem to receive the advertised TT rate on the Bangkok Bank website (this appears slightly less, if dividing what arrived in my BKK acc to what left my offshore acc due to the service charges). On the few occasions I have sent larger amounts of 10-20k GBP it has worked out better than the advertised TT rate.

  7. I have found the best beef burger in BKK after looking for almost a year. It's located next to terminal 21.The restaurant is called El Gaucho Argentinian Steakhouse, there steaks I have been told are amazing also. I think my bacon & cheese burger was 490, it comes with chips & salad, the meat used is very high standard. Please if you know of good burgers in bkk, please post.

I'll take 3 Carl's Jr superstar burgers for the same price thank you!

I've tried Carl's Jr about 4 times and never been impressed, just one step up from McDonalds in my opinion. It's ok for a cheap and cheerful fast burger if that's what your looking for, but hardly what you would call quality.

  8. I used to use a place near the Sukhumvit end of Thonglor. There is a little side soi between the flower shops on the left hand side if heading towards Sukhumvit, the small shophouse launderette is 10 meters or so inside the side soi on the right. Not been there in about 3 years though as I found myself a girlfriend to operate the washer and drier in my condo. I can't remeber if it was per kilo or item, but they always seamed reasonably priced.

  9. I am having the same problems at my condo in BKK. I am Chief Engineer onboard a superyacht where everything has to be super clean so asked the stewardesses/housekeepers what they use, and they claim that pure alcohol and water is the best product to remove it. I have not yet found any pure alcohol in BKK to give it a go though. I also heard that once clean a very light smear of WD40 stops the scale from building up.

  10. Indian food- Indus soi 26 excellent and has 500 baht all you can eat lunches at weekends.

Steaks- Marriott's New York steak house- great steaks (a bit pricey- dinner for 2 will set you back 15,000 baht (and that does not include desserts :-P

Buffets- four seasons, sheraton grande- both great.

15,000 Baht????? I like to spend money on my food but that is a little over the top.

I was surprised a bit myself- more expensive than any meal i paid while living for several years in Manhattan!

NY at JW Marriott is probably my favorite steak joint in BKK but like you say can be a bit pricey. I do really like El Gouchos on Soi 19 too, very good quality steaks and a lot cheaper than the Marriott, bill normally comes in around 3-4k for two. I tried Dallas Steakhouse the other week which has recently opened on the corner of Suk 33 (used to be Coyotes), not as good as Gouchos or JW Mariott but very reasonably priced at around 900baht for a decent steak.

  11. I used to use the one near Narz but have not been in a while.

Lately I have been using the one in the Terminal 21 car park and they do a decent job, 100baht and takes about an hour.

  12. I have never carried my passport or photocopy of it and have been living in BKK for 6 months a year for the past 10 years. (I believe it is the law to carry it though from what I have read)

I have been stopped by police on foot a few occasions, often late at night after a good few ales and they have asked for passport, I have showed my Thai driving license or UK License in the early years I was here, all been OK and never had to part with any tea money.

I do always put my passport in my bag if driving up country or outside of BKK for a few days just incase, but so far have never needed it.

  13. Has anyone recently been able to find beef suet anywhere in BKK?

I read a thread from 2011 on here that it was available in Villa. I've just searched the isles of the Villa near Suk 33 with no luck, but not been upto the Thonglor one yet.

Fancy making a nice steak and kidney pudding or some mince and dumplings.

    Cheers,

    Mark

  14. I have ordered from Tenderloins a few times when feeling lazy on foodbyphone and chefsxp.com, It is a bit hit and miss though, had a few good ones (For Thailand) and a few bad ones, I would say more bad ones to be honest. Like people say, steak doesn't travel well.

If I fancy a decent steak these days I pop to El Gouchos on Soi 19 which I have always been pleased with, or JW Marriot is good for a feed.

  15. Just been down to the Queen Vic on Sukhumvit 23 again for a full English so though I would snap a pic of it.

That's the small Breakfast including a pot of tea which does me fine. All for 225 baht which I think is good value and very good quality!

    attachicon.gifIMG_0482.JPG

I don't consider that good value at all. That's actually overpriced! Maybe one may consider it a good value on Sukhumvit, if he didn't get out much! tongue.png

    It's Thailand! It's not the U.S. or U.K.

I have had many a breakfast in Thailand over the years, and yes out in the sticks I have had sub 100 baht "Americn style Breakfasts" which consist of a hotdog, some shrivelled up grizzle, a lump of rubber ham and virtualy the only decent thing there an egg. But for a decent quality british style sausage, back bacon, black pudding, Tetley tea etc, 225baht is about the cheapest I have had and regardless of the cost my best breakie in Bangkok anyway.

  17. My Favourite place for a traditional full English and a pot of Tetleys tea is always the Queen Vic on Sukhumvit Soi 23.

    How much is it?

225 baht for the half Breakie which usually does me. Back bacon, 1x sausage, black pudding, mushrooms, beens, 1 fried egg, toast, hash brown and a pot of tea. I think it's around 350 baht for the kings Breakfast which is basically the same but 2x everything.
