  1. and since ages I am still waiting for some moderately-priced TUITION/classes/courses for LINUX to be held by some individual or by any learning/tuition Centre in Bangkok.....

yes, tought by a human being made from flesh and blood, not just a silly DVD or book, I need someone who I can be pester with Computer-Dummie-questions every few seconds.... (until I finally GOT IT).

the LINUX-books I already own did not reply to any of my questions when I asked them :ermm:

  2. instead of tracking each tourists steps day-by-day in a paranoid way as planned, Thai immigration should rather require proof of an insurance when a tourist enters the country. that way, TREATMENT would come first before PAYMENT, because all hospitals would be assured that a foreigner actually IS insured. but such thing will probably not happen anytime soon..... :ermm:

  3. Seeing the age of those planes reminds me of the one sticking out of Ripleys.Brave Men fly Cattle Class

    are you kidding ?

AIR ASIA MALAYSIA has the newest fleet of any Airline in Asia, be it a no-frills-carrier or a legacy-carrier.

THAI AIR ASIA still had a few older B-737, but they are being phased out quickly, as new A-320 arrive almost every month. Thai AirAsia had 4 brandnew A-320 delivered between May and July 2010. a faster pace is hardly possible..... if you want to experience really old aircraft, refer to Thai Airways International, Nok Air, and - of course - the notorious "Orient Thai"....

  4. another topic-ZOMBIE (year 2004 !) brought back to life.....

I really wonder why THAIVISA does not decide to close a topic after it has been dead for 1 year or so. I mean, after all, this is missleading. in this specific case, a musician may think there is a vacancy, not realizing that the post has been made 6 years ago. in specific cases (for example, follow-up to a crime), the OPs could still re-open an ancient topic by request.

for example, tripadvisor.com closes topics after no new post has been made for 6 months. this makes sense somehow, as information or advice can become outdated and non-accurate very quickly.

or am I the only one seeing it that way ?

  5. Contact this outfit down in Klong Toey: http://www.mercycentre.org/

They'll send a vehicle to pick up your excess. I once donated a refrigerator, no problem.

FYI, that's Fr Joe Maier's group.

    Mac

about 2 years ago or so, I had things to donate too, no rubbish, plenty of clothes and shoes (some completely new) in excellent condition plus a couple of useful household items.

I had emailed MERCYCENTRE before I contacted anyone else, but they did not even bother to reply.

so I asked the forum here and someone recommended SCADBANGKOK animals rescue (scadbangkok.org), they obviously have a shop where they sell those donations to turn it into money.

they replied to my email immediately and we set a date to collect the items.

a well-dressed and friendly Thai gentleman arrived with his pick-up perfectly on time and after another five minutes he had left already with all my donated items.

I felt I had done it the right way and would therefore recommend this organisation

  6. in contrary to those strict Thai embassies and consulates in the ASEAN region, applying for a multiple-B at most European consulates, you don't need all that. One simple "invitation-letter" by the company will do.

I always bring tons of documents, including the companies registration, each of the pages signed and stamped, and the lady who usually issues the VISA ( no Thai national) gets annoyed when she sees that and only picks the invitation-letter, which is just one page, and asks me to take all that other crap back home...... hohoho...... lucky we r in Europe, aren't we ^_^

  7. I always get out of my car at a petrol station, watching everything that is going on, and - as I have to use a credit card sometimes - following the attendant to the cashiers desk to make sure they do not try to copy the data or write down the number (the 3-digit code on the backside I have made unrecognizable anyway)

  8. ]TPL matches this weekend

    7/8 - 4.30pm True Vision - TTM Pichit v Chonburi

    7/8 - 6pm Football Siam - Bangkok Glass v TOT Cat

    7/8 - 6pm T-Sport - Pattaya Utd v Army

    7/8 - 6pm Siam Sport - Bangkok Utd v BuriramPEA

    8/8 - 6pm Siam Sport - Muang Thong United v Thai Port

Muang Thong v Thai Port is the pick of the matches this weekend for sure. They are the two form teams.

    and goals of July vid

    anybody in Bangkok going to see one of these games ? at my age, I think it is time to lose my Thai-Premier-league-virginity {~_~}

  9. maybe 70-80 Baht less from On Nut.

From Sala Daeng, Taxi would most probably ask u to use the Tollway from Rama4. which would cost you an extra 60-70 Baht tollway-fees.

from On Nut, no tolls to be paid, going down Sukhumvit, then Bangna-Trat road. not much of a difference in travelling time, using the tollway outside rush-hours is usually a straight-forward thing.

if you are on a budget, then take the BTS to On Nut (I assume that was your plan) and then the public Bus 552 ? 553 ? 554 ? which costs 35 Baht and runs approx. every 20 minutes or so

  10. Fortunately i only signed a months contract as i rented without viewing so will move, but im sure that no one not even Muslims enjoy being woken up at 5.30 am.

you must be kidding..... have you ever been to Jakarta ? thousands of Mosques will surround you.

Muslim people are used to it and if someone would tell them to stop the prayer calls, there would be a giant unrest in the entire country.....

  11. Yes, buffet breakfast @ 150 baht. Excellent value for money, I go there myself.

    that sounds good then

will give it a try later this week

KARENBRAVO, can you specify WHICH hotels in HKT-City have good lunch buffets and what's the deal ?

ROYAL PHUKET CITY would be my first thought, but maybe there are some other good city-hotels I don't know about

  12. Finding a job for an expat in the catering industry in either Hatyai or Songkhla is about as rare as rocking horse sh-t. In times long past the JB Hotel had expats on its staff as did the Central Sukhanta (excuse the spelling). Bars and restuarants that employ expats are generally owned and operated by expats and the owner tends to be the chef. Phuket or places like Pattaya might be a better option where there is a steady flow of western tourists.

Mallyrd, i agree with you in general. It is a tough job market for any Western trained and experienced chef.

However, if Malani's boyfriend has the necessary Asian working characteristics and aptness including his relevant chef experiences, he could fit into an existing f/b establishment, don't you agree?

Anyway, the spelling of the hotel name should read, Central Sukhonta, situating right in the heart of the little shopping mecca--Hatyai, right across the street from McDonald in Lee Garden Plaza Hotel.

anyway, the spelling of the hotel name should read "NOVOTEL CENTARA HAT YAI"........ ;)

  13. Do not go to Malaysia early September this year, as it is the HARI RAYA SEASON (end of Ramadhan), and pretty much everyone and his dog is hitting the road.

during another season, LANGKAWI would be worth a try too, relatively easy to reach when flying into HAT YAI. Or, if you want to stay in Thailand, Koh Lanta. But Lanta is really VERY quiet during this time of the year and your wife may feel bored, as there is little "Sanook" on offer (this island has a Muslim majority anyway).

after you mentioned you have never been there before, I wouldn't mind to give PHUKET a try. there are absolutely FANTASTIC Hotel-deals to be had at the moment, and Phuket is more diverse than most people wanna believe or acknowledge. you can join the seedy nightlife areas of BANGLA ROAD, but as well linger at almost deserted and secluded beaches such as those North of Patong, nearer to the airport, if BANGLA ROAD is not your cup of tea. NOK and BANGKOK AIR have good fares at the moment as well, usually much better than overpriced AirAsia (which is only cheap when flying from Phuket to UDON at the moment).

  14. I clicked on the link and the first thing I saw without scrolling down was a "HOTEL RESERVATION SERVICE"

and too bad the author did not post the name of all those foods in THAI FONTS, so those not able to read Thai (or at least not fluent such as myself) would find it more easy to spot the particularly dishes on the chalkboard of a local streetside-stall or hawker.....

  15. Long overdue alliance. They have left Thai AirAsia to dominate for much too long in a growing lucrative market. In fact, Nok should have seized the international market opportunity and not just concentrate on domestic route. Too bad now, they missed out on a easy profitable business.

NOK did a very bad job promoting their few international routes, so no wonder they failed, and they repeatedly have announced they are not interested to start international routes for the time being.

It can only be good for competition to have a new Airline such as Thai Tiger, as AirAsia fares are usually VERY EXPENSIVE nowadays, unless you book during one of their twice-yearly ZERO FARES - promotions when they introduce their new summer- or winter-timetables.

flying to Phuket or Chiang Mai, AirAsia are usually the 2nd most expensive Airline after THAI INTERNATIONAL.

NOK, Orient Thai (okay okay, no one really wants to fly them) and even the excellent Bangkok Air are cheaper in most of the cases

  16. I think that you are correct, I have been to these neighboring countries and they are not as nice as Thailand, I even spent some time in Hong Kong. I'm pretty sure that it is Asia that I don't like and not just Thailand i particular! Sorry Thailand I did not mean to bash you only!!

I just can't adjust to life here in Asia and I have tried (almost 5 years) I have my own business, employ Thais and pay my taxes! It is just not for me anymore.

Please remind me of the good things here in Thailand!!

well yes, your original post could have been indeed written by someone who lives in Malaysia too. in fact, I have read a similar post on another forum from someone who lives in Malaysia.

Some people can adjust to life in a complete different environment, some can not or do not want to, or rather want to (desperately and not successfully) change the place to be similar as their native country.

as you obviously still like your native country a lot, it might be the best solution to go back.... but then again, after a while you would probably find out that it is not that perfect there as well.....

usually people always want what they do NOT have, e.g: those single want a relationship, and those married or in a relationship want back their freedom..... such is human nature.....

but whatever your decision, CHOKDEE ^_^

  17. some decent but moderately-priced BF-BUFFET (BUFFET only, no "set-BF please) recommendations in rather Phuket-non-resident friendly and easily accessible (without own transport) areas such as Patong or Karon/Kata ? Probably there are no places such as LEK HOTEL in Pattaya, where you can combine a relatively decent BF and Lunch for a mere 119 Baht...... or am I wrong ? any recommendations are appreciated

  18. Who are they trying to convince? It doesn't work with me so they must be trying to convince themselves

there is no need to "convince" anyone.

people from all over the world will ALWAYS come back to Thailand quickly, as it is a desired destination, no matter what those moaners and whiners say.

after all, those moaners and whiners reside in Thailand too, or travel there frequently.

the thing is, people in general forget quickly, and indeed destinations such as Phuket or Samui never had trouble regarding unrest. they may have problems regarding transport-Mafias though, but most tourists care little about that

Thailand is a phenomenon, always bouncing back, no matter what happens (Tsunami, SARS, Bird-Flu, PAD-Airport-occupation, Military Coups, Public unrest......)

the thing is, no other county here in the region offers a similar experience - fantastic value for money when it comes to accomodation, cheap and AROI food, and SANOOK as if there is no tomorrow. plus a pretty good touristic and public infrastructure, including very good hospitals.

you cannot have that in the same way in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar.....

that's how it is, and therefore, I will probably not move to anywhere else for the time being, even I acknowledge there is a lot wrong in this country too, in 2010 more than ever before.

  19. You should have known better than to expect good steaks at the Sizzler for any price. Now you know. Stick with the salad bar only or the 169 processed Teriyaki chicken. People go for the salad bar.

yeah, that's what I always do. going for the salad bar plus Pasta.

and then get a "chicken terriyaki steak" as an extra.

not the worst value at 169 baht (don't forget to mention the free desserts).

to be fair, there are some better Sizzler's around the country, the one in KAT SUAN KAEW in CM I always found quite good.

but the one in PTY's Royal Garden Plaza is probably the worst of the gang......

if you primarily go for a steak, don't go to Sizzler...... if go for a nice and fresh salad, GO GO GO to Sizzler ^^
