I recently bought a block of 25 02-***-**** numbers from CAT. They work perfectly with any SIP application. Just contact them.
Sorry, and how much do you have to pay for that?

Paveet, that's a bit too technical for me but I would like to understand how it works. Is your Linksys SPA3102 box in Thailand, and permanently connected to the Internet?

Maestro
Yeah, this is one of the reason this may not be practical for someone who doesnt already have the infrastructure at home (or office) to do it. Your line would be as reliable as your internet connection, electrical supply etc.
For me:
TRUE ANALOGUE NORMAL PHONE LINE <--> SPA3102 <--> SWITCHING HUB/ROUTER <--> INTERNET
This was posted earlier:

that does indeed say you can get a Thai number (I assume 02) with those plans.

VOIP isn't illegal in Thailand, there are many companies including very large ones (even True offers it) currently. From what I last heard my friend who lives in Japan has an 02 (Bangkok) incoming number provided by Cat2Call.
Personally, I bought a Linksys SPA3102 box which has 1 FXO port (and 1 FXS port). What an FXO port does is it takes in an analogue line and convert that into VoIP data. I have my Bangkok number running in my room in the UK, voice quality is quite good apart from the quiet echo you get from the SPA3102 itself (it's quite a cheap device ~2500THB so it doesnt have a built in echo canceller).

apple has tried to turn the fact that there isnt an optical drive into you no longer need an optical drive in this wireless world. I have used a laptop without a built in optical drive for the past 3 years, and I can only tell you how irritating it can be at times.

Great to hear. I've never really been a great fan of Bose, I think they are over priced. I'm happy with my Shure SE420 (successor to Shure E4C).

Has anyone lost any SMS (i.e. they didnt go through) sent to the UK (in my case from DTAC pay monthly to Orange UK contract) over the last few days?
Thanks,

The Thai absolutely beat farangs in the number of complaints about IPstar. My Thai partner watches the Thai forums regularly and he thinks the farang actually form a minority.I'm considering the CAT Hinet GSHDSL 2mbit premium connection. I hope that it will be better than what I've had before (basically, pretty much anything that actually delivers will be better).
I can recommend it. This graph is from last week (CAT g.shdsl line on Samui), uploading 3 torrents internationally with upload speeds of over 1Mbps
The speed has seriously gone downhill over the last week or two, like seriously. I'm on CAT Hinet g.shdsl premium on bangkok (and also have access to a litepack, the more expensive static ip account)..
-
I'm in Bangkok, the problem happens on both premium (2800 thb) and litepack (5500thb) but worse on premium.

I have experienced the same thing, it was only the last two weeks that the bandwidth during the day is unusable (<150kbps!), before it was 1.8mbps/1.3mbps (up/down) all along. I wonder what happened.
-
I tried the same thing, what I did in the end was carry one in from the UK. It's annoying because you cannot get a TV signal in if you select satellite/cable (and use anything but coax in) because it keeps asking for IR blasters!

Took them 5 to deliver my Dell PowerEdge SC430 back in 2006.

The AIS one-2-call sawadee sim also gives 365 days validity with any top up too. IR comes enabled on default.. at least on mine.

Picking up calls in the UK on roaming isnt as expensive as some posts suggested (100+ baht/min), it's actually about 20-30 baht/min (with the exception of T-Mobile which has the worst signal in the UK anyway:P).
Have a look here http://www.dtac.co.th/getfile/dtac/inter/Roaming_06_1.aspx

Wow, finally got my dream desktop built to my spec:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2.4 GHz 6,900 Baht
This is a real monster built at home with help of the local computer guy. I am sooo happy with it!
Typo? If not where can l buy one at this price?
I was asking myself the same question. Yeah, where did you pick that up?
-
Switch to the Sawasdee simcard (from AIS/1-2-Call) or DTAC Simple simcard. With any refills (even 20 baht), you get 365 days validity.

I use voipdiscount.com and sipgate.co.uk and I have no problems getting a good connection with 95%+ uptime..

Well, the ridiculous ping times at the moment are due to some cables being damaged since 8th Sept because of an earthquake. I've been informed by CAT that these will be fixed by next week.
Nominal ping from here to US west coast is around 220-250ms, 280-300ms for east coast, 250-350ms for Europe (if it goes through the Europe links rather than to the US and back).

Now this threat has gotten me interested in buying the Garmin Mobile 10 bluetooth GPS receiver.. anyone has experience with using it on the HTC Touch? What about maps in other places like the UK.. can I install that on my pda along with the supplied thai maps?
-
It depends how basic the design is. Personally, the cheapest I'd design for would be 8000 for first page + 1500 for subsequent pages after and that'd be like doing them a favour (i.e. if i personally know them or they're my relatives or something). Prices for for-profit companies would be much higher (looking at 3-4 times the cost).

I found a small solution to do it, but its far from perfect because it doesn't measure the amount of the time the data transfer has stopped, but measure from the moment I connect (thats what it seems to be!)
The thingo is called GB-Soft and adds as an extra icon in the 'system' tab of 'settings'.

Hi
I own an HTC Touch which runs MS Windows Mobile 6. ActiveSync syncs with the Exchange server every 15 minutes, which means GPRS *should* get turned on for that particular time, then *should* be disconnected when the device is done syncing. However, this doesnt happen.
Does anyone know how to make a GPRS/EDGE connection disconnect when idle, for example 1 minute, on Windows Mobile? I've spent an hour looking for it today with no hopes!
Thanks,
Pavee

I was on the verge of buying it, but opted for the HTC Touch instead.
The "VoIP capable" is there because Windows Mobile 6 supports SIP (i.e. there's a built in SIP client), so you can connect to many providers (e.g. voipdiscount, sipgate, etc) that utilises the SIP protocol. This is assuming you're connected to your home/office Wi-Fi, since SIP over GRPS/EDGE is .. erm.. not good.
Skype for SmartPhone (Windows Mobile Standard Edition) is available, but I'm not sure if it is still in beta or how stable the software is now. Just google for it.
Hi paveet, thought no one replied to this. scrolled back a couple pages and found this! .. I have seen adverts of HTC touch but nothing much more about it. Does it also run using WM 6 as an OS? can you run skype on it? I don't really like voipdiscount. installed VOIP discount yesterday, made my free call to malaysia yesterday and they cut me off saying i have reached the free limit after 2 minutes. that was a turn off enough for me to uninstall the software immediately.
did u buy the HTC touch in bkk? and for how much?
I bought the HTC Touch in Bangkok for 19200. It runs WM 6 as an OS and yes, there is skype for Pocket PC.
