  1. I'm pretty sure Chiefs V Brumbies is on South African Supersports at 2pm in the avo Thai time. UN Irish Pub is probably your best bet for watching it with such an early kick-off. Drop in and ask beforehand to be sure.

  2. Alcoholic drinks. :)

Not to be confused with Nipples, unless you happen down Loy Kroh Road of an evening, but I wouldn't know how much they are! :D:D

  3. Most of us are probably aware of the increased tax or excise on alcohol and ciggies but what I would like to know from the many bar owners and customers of the myriad of bars in this fine city is how the government sponsored tax or excise increases will, or have already started to, affect the average punter in his/her pocket?

Maybe some of you could give examples of before and after/soon to be prices of your most popular tipples?

    Many thanks in advance.

  4. WHAT????? Hey go to chez marco mediterainian restaurant and try the food them comment... this is what this thread is all about. nobody wants to read volumous verabalege about nothing..

Exactly my point with this thread for the most part.

I hope you're working on commission mate but your sales pitch could do with some alteration. It's really getting boring now. We get it. The place is good. We'll try it.

  5. try chez marocs spend time there eating fine fresh food not on this thead!!! try the blackened chicken wonderful dish....!!!!

Welcome back Marco, ooops I mean Gatorhead. I was wondering when we might expect you. Buckle up folks. Now we're in for numerous repetitive posts about healthy, southern French/ mediterranean food blah blah blah blah. Please spare us! We read all of these in the first original thread. Nobody is questioning the quality of the food or the restaurant, least of all me. I just want to read about the food and the restaurant not anything non-related. Feel free to show more pictures of meals as no doubt you are their number 1 fan and probably have a copy of their menu on your pillow to kiss before bedtime :)

Unfortunately, as I believe you pointed out already Marco's isn't open in the morning so I had to idly pass the time of day on TV while I waited for the doors to be flung open to the great unwashed. Maybe I will try that blackened chicken or maybe I'll just go along and have what a look at the menu and see what I want. Or maybe I won't go at all but don't you dare be so presumptuous to post what I highlighted in red here:

hey, go try chez marcos or stay off thread!! what is this diffucult to get a table?

This was written between my post and UG's response as quoted by Gatorhead. For those of you concerned by such things nobody actually posted this line in any previous posts so this was clearly Gatorhead attempting to comment at the foot of my quoted post and on top of UG's post and either not differentiating the text or forgetting to remove it. However, I would hope that most people can now recognise this thread for what it really is! :D

Having said that, do try the restaurant if you wish as the feedback is very positive.

  6. I know this is possibly a very private issue to be discussing on an open forum but I don't think discussing the pros and cons is going to embarass anyone. The reason I posted is to try and find out some info on behalf of an in-law, who is Thai.

However, after reading Eek's post and her comment "Bf's daughters are likely to have it, as recommended by the doctor" it is possible that Thai doctors are widely recommending this vaccine even though there are serious concerns about its safety, side effects and even the manner in which it got US FDA approval.

Please, please, please don't be afraid to discuss this. It may not affect you directly but it may affect some of your family or friends in Thailand.

    Thanks again.

    Kind regards,

    Hill16

  7. One last point. McG closed the original thread because it had gone off track. To quote:

"The conversation has moved from a new restaurant in CM, to the topic of the horrors of Spicy, to some now serious negative commentary and flaming. . . .

    Closed, for obvious reasons."

This thread has gone in a similar direction, imho.

I see nothing in this thread that bears any meaningful resemblance to 'the topic of the horrors of Spicy' or 'serious negative commentary and flaming'. The closest to negative commentary and flaming here are your comments themselves, and it would be odd, I think, to enable a person who wants to close a thread to achieve his goal by adding his own negative commentary to it.

I concur with UG, and suggest that you simply go somewhere else and leave alone people who are doing no more, by way of offending you, than having some innocent and silly fun. Evidently, you don't want to be here and I suspect that I am joined by others in not, shall we say, welcoming you.

I think you might try reading my post again. I wasn't suggesting that this thread resembles 'the topic of the horrors of Spicy' or 'serious negative commentary and flaming'. I am saying that it has gone way off track when the majority of 2 full pages out of 3 have nothing to do with the restaurant itself.

I would also be curious to know exactly how you perceive that my commentary is 'the closest to negative commentary and flaming"?? :D I felt it was written in quite a light-hearted manner as I tried to make clear by the use of humourous emoticons. Nowhere did I criticise the restaurant. In fact, I acknowledged how good it seems to be based on peoples' comments. Nowhere did I criticise other TV members. I merely suggested that this post should be moved to the recommended businesses section or closed because it has gone so far off the point that it has become irrelevant to a review of the restaurant. You make out like I'm conducting some sort of orchestrated campaign to have the thread closed. Maybe you've watched to many 007 movies. :)

I am not offended by people having silly fun on a thread. What does annoy me a little though is when I want to read about a restaurant and I have to go looking for the one post in 20 that actually talks about the restaurant. Where else exactly do you suggest I go to read about restaurants on TV since you "evidently" know me so well and know whether I want to be here or not? Furthermore, I find your arrogance contemptible in assuming that you or others may or may not welcome somebody onto a thread. Who do you think you are? You self-important, big-headed b*st**d!

  8. I get much of what you are saying, but would counter that almost any thread on Thaivisa could turn into a complete mess. Off topic statements, flaming and general fooling around are not in any way specific to restaurant threads. :)

Of course not but maybe then the 2 new sub-forums idea could be expanded to genuine topics and inane banter camouflaged as genuine topics. Kinda like a kiddies' play area to occupy them while Mum and Dad talk about adult stuff? :D

  9. Hi ladies,

I'm posting this in the 'Ladies in Thailand' forum as this is specifically a ladies' issue rather than a general health query. A doctor has recommended that my wife's sister get the Gardasil vaccine? I'm very concerned about this as there appears to be numerous horror stories on the internet about it. Do any of the ladies out there have an opinion on it and any information regarding cost, possible health risks, personal experiences.

If you have some info but are not willing to post publicly, please PM me.

    Kind regards,

    Hill16

  10. From this thread and the previous one on the same topic it is quite clear that this restaurant serves very good food at a good price. Contact details for bookings have been posted in the other thread and clear directions have been given in this one.

Isn't it now about time that this thread and the other were merged and then moved to the recommended businesses topic or closed? It's wonderful that people have enjoyed this restaurant but the point has been made enough. Praise is one thing but overpraise and repeating the same thing over and over again gets a bit much. Let members decide for themselves with their feet.

Anyway, the longer this stays open the more difficult it will be for everybody to get a table :):D:D

  11. Eek,

I'd say this is exactly the right place to ask such a question as there are quite a few in this forum with more than one screw loose already :D:D:D:)

Is that device in the pics a hair straightener by the way?

    Regards,

    Hill16

  12. Hi folks,

Does anyone have up to date info on the requirements in CM for transferring ownership of a vehicle (motorbike) from one party (the wife - Thai) to another (me - farang) please?

Also, must I go to the Land and Transport Office on CM-Lamphun Road opposite the Holiday Inn?

    Kind regards,

    Hill16

  13. They may welcome 'aussie chicks', but can be down right rude to your Thai wife!

Though in their deffence I swallowed my pride and attended the last TV part with friends there. Mrs would not attend.

    Iain

I would like to mention that my wife has always been treated superbly by Tuskers staff as have all my friends' Thai partners. I'm not saying that your wife didn't have a bad experience but I do find this incredibly surprising based on my personal experiences there.

I also note that you have signed up + 1 for the TV BBQ in Tuskers next month. Will you be bringing your mia noi instead of your wife? :)

Maybe Tuskers should bar from the TV BBQ all those TV members who choose to use this forum to voice complaints about Tuskers instead of talking to the manager directly. Tag them as the new "Axis of Evil". Keyboard cowards!

  14. I have been informed that Tuskers did not "collude" with this post and I accept that and apologise if I implied that they did. I still note though that the OP did implicitely denigrate the other bars and cosider most of my reply to stevieH still stand. As this was not advertising by TUskers it is quite obvious that they did not denigrate the other pubs. THe OP did.

Am I alone in being being bemused by Harry's continued insistence that the OP denigrated other bars? Maybe my eyesight is failing me but nowhere in this thread did the OP mention any other bars by name. How can you denigrate somewhere if you do not even name it? In fact, she went out of her way not to mention the places that she considered to have provided poor customer service. There are thousands and thousands of bars in CM and presumably Harry does not know which ones the OP visited unless he read it in his tea leaves or his crystal ball.

Or maybe the OP is a raging alcoholic, insomniac and she managed to stay out drinking 24 hours per day for her 7 weeks in CM and thus covered every single pub, bar, shack and hut that serves booze in CM. If so, I take my hat off to her and suggest that she is entitled to denigrate where she likes! :D:)

Give it a rest Harry, old chap. You're boring us. Go redeem your free pint in your local pub for all your hard work on this thread, which is obviously a competitor of Tuskers and cannot stand the good press given by the OP of her own volition. Cheers :D

  15. Great idea. We should all support the forum sponsors. They've got my vote. :)

Perhaps I am blind but can somebody please point out where this forum is sponsored by 'The Duke's' restaurants??? If it is, then I apologise for the following.

For the moderators: This is veiled advertising of a particular establishment which, unless I am mistaken, is against Thaivisa rules. You have closed numerous threads in which people try to subtly advertise their businesses, for good or for bad so I think a little bit of consistency is in order here. For example, Kevin Hunt was warned for the same thing over his 'free water' thread and ultimately chose to resign his membership rather than be subjected to being warned over and over again. The hypocrisy on this website when it comes to so-called rules is disgraceful.

Might I add that I have eaten in The Duke's and I did enjoy it so my criticism is not aimed at the Dave or his restaurants.

  16. Jack was about to marry Jill and his father took him to one side 'When I married your mother, the first thing I did when we got home was take off my trousers,' he said. 'I gave them to your mother and told her to put them on . When she did, they were enormous on her and she said to me that she couldn't possibly wear them, as they were too large. 'I told her, 'of course they're too big. I wear the trousers in this family and I always will. 'Ever since that day, we have never had a single problem..'

Jack took his father's advice and as soon as he got Jill alone after the wedding, he did the same thing; took off his trousers, gave them to Jill and told her to put them on. Jill said that the trousers were too big and she couldn't possibly wear them..

'Exactly,' replied Jack.? I wear the trousers in this relationship and I always will. I don't want you to forget that.'

Jill paused and removed her knickers and gave them to Jack. 'Try these on,' she said, so he tried them on but they were too small. 'I can't possibly get into your knickers,' said Jack. 'Exactly,' replied Jill. 'And if you don't change your f *** ing attitude, you never will.'

    :o:D

  17. I work in a private language school and my holidays are as follows:

    10 days paid vacation

Paid Block Leave over the Christmas - New Year period when the school is closed (the number of a days varies year by year)

    13 paid Thai Public Holidays

Interesting that this thread is open as I have a liitle rant, if you will permit me. 31 December 2009 is counted as one of my 13 per contract Thai Public Holidays and as part of our Block Leave even though Block Leave is a time when the school is closed anyway for that period. In effect, this reduces our number of Public Holidays to 12 whereas in the contract I am entitled to 13. Also, this year, one of our 13 Thai Public Holidays is Christmas Day! I may be an idiot but I don't believe that Christmas Day is a Thai Public Holiday. It should be part of Block Leave, if anything, as it was last year.

The problem for me is that when I raised these issues with my employer I was basically told to like it or leave. This attitude came as quite a surprise given my previous dealings with my employer and quite frankly it disgusts me. I am living in Thailand on an extension of stay based on this employment. I also have a wife and son to support so I can't just leave the employment which would mean having to cancel my visa on my last day of employment as things stand as well as all the complications surrounding getting a new visa etc

I know that some of you will probably advise me to leave but it's not that simple as I have already mentioned. Another thing is that I really enjoy working for my school and I don't want to leave. What I want is for my employer to perhaps consider that the holidays should be amended. I think I will have an opportunity to discuss this with my employer personally next week so any advice on how to approach this would be helpful. I feel that it will also be necessary to highlight my displeasure with their attitude and point out that I am not not a poor labourer from Myanmar who can be hushed up by these veiled threats and that employees who feel they have valid issues should be given an opportunity to discuss these. This may appear insignificant to some of you but what happens if next year my employer decides on a 20% pay cut? Should we then like it or leave too?

Kind regards and I look forward to your advice.

  18. I see that many posting here, some being critical and some not, but one thing seems to have gone over everyone's head .

The lady involved in the article, Ms. Kathryn McDaniel, is truly in Chiang Mai, an angel of mercy. She has many times a overlooked and thankless job, with the exception of after-the-fact , those she aids.

As in this case, the Australian Consular gang, as stated was not aware of the fact that these two young men were being held for 5 days. I do not fault Mike Walters, [Hon. Aust Consul., CM] but rather the communication link between the police and the foreign embassy's.

I know this lady Kathryn and I just want to say that I admire her determination and respect the work she does immensely.

And before some of you hard core , anti church group start ripping her apart, just keep in mind, someday it just may be possible that she could be your initial contact with the outside world...... Don't knock it...... Stranger things have happened...... I can tell you it did with one former member of this forum.

Keep up the good work Kathryn. I hope our paths cross again, but not in your office away from home

    Gonzo

Well said, sir. I have the utmost respect and admiration for people like this lady who give of themselves so selflessly in helping others.

  19. As well as the likely cash benefits of telling their story to the news channels maybe they could swing a part in some insurance company's anti-fraud advertising campaign. This could turn out to be a lucrative experience for the two guys, even if they find it hard to sit down for a while :o

  20. I find so many of the biggoted comments on this thread disturbing.

Let us all remember that prostitution in itself is market driven. Where there is a market, suppliers will fill the market. Where it requires skilled labour or specific expertise, then those with the expertise fill the opportunities. Those with limited opportunity take what else is available to survive. Some rob and steal, some 'work' in more seamier occupations to survive.

If it was not for the punters (tourists from other countries) there would be no market and these girls would not be in this position. Don't blame the girls nor demonise them for seizing an opportunity to survive. castigate the filty and thoughtless pricks who make the market in the first place

Let's look at the wider picture and have some compassion

Yes, Thai men don't use prostitutes. There is no Thai market for ladies of the night. That must be why the car park of Sayuri is full everyday from about 3pm 'til closing and why the huge amount of little Thai bars with sexy ladies are often quite busy compared with the Loy Kroh area. And foreigners must have invented the mia noi too, as Thai men are strictly one-woman-men. Also, I'm sure that the girls only go with foreigners as it is the foreigners who created the huge gap in wealth distribution in Thai society.

  21. Hi,

Just a quick question. Usually if you are in a particular forum you can see a list at the bottom of the page of who else is viewing that forum. The same goes for individual threads. However, it doesn't appear to be working today. Is there a problem?

    Regards,

    Hill16
