  1. Isn't the requirement if 90 day report mailed in at least 7 days in advance and if in person 7 days in advance or 7 days after.

This has been a much discussed subject regarding the amount of time "before and after" applying for a 90 day report using form TM 47.

According to the Royal Thai Police Regulation which has been amended and is now in line with the head of Chiang Mai immigration....the official "before and after" timescale of 90 day reporting is 15 days before and 7 days after.

I hope that this dispels all rumours and heresay on this forum.

If you are unsure ...just speak with the head of immigration to confirm the requirements. I only wish to pass on what I have experienced first hand.

    Regards

Just what I was looking for - Very Grateful.

  2. Going to do my first 90 report in person soon, what do I need to bring?? Just my passport?

    Thanks much....

    You'll need the following:

    1. The actual torn-off slip from your previous 90 Day Report (TM 47) that shows the next reporting date.

    2. One copy of a newly completed TM47.

    3. One copy of each of the following from your passport:

    • Your Photo.
    • Personal Details eg Full Name and Date of Birth (They're usually on the same page as the photo, so this should save on copying).
    • Your Present Visa.

    4. As with most officialdom you'll have to sign the different photocopies.

Don't worry - just in case you didn't know, there's a place to photocopy, which is to the left of the immigration office, presuming you are looking at the main entrance. There are always lots of blank copies of the different forms available in the main office, it you have a 'Senior Moment' when completing the form. So, it's easier and quicker if you prepare(Remember the 7 P's) but you can do it all there if you want or need to.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Could the OP kindly list the exact address for CM Immigation that he sent his TM47 to?

    Thanks in advance. :jap:

    I will quote two addresses here, take your pick;

    1. I used this to send my documents - I found it on the official 'Chiang Mai Immigration' leaflet.

  4. Chiang Mai Immigration were very good, when they sent the slip back they included a spare blank 90 Day Report for the next time. I had to send the info twice and they also returned the unused Self Addressed Envelope.

Big Thumbs Up, Well Done and Thank You to Chiang Mai Immigration. Just wondering, is there a particular route to give positive feedback to Chiang Mai Immigration?

How far from Chiang Mai are you ? might be handy to know for those living a long way away. Also wise to photo copy all the immigration forms, never know when you mind need one !

I live about an hour and 20 minutes from Chiang Mai Immigration.

    This is their webiste: http://chiangmaiimm.com/

At the bottom you find an email address.

Many thanks, just sent them a message.

  7. 90 day reporting by mail requires send your passport, doesn't it?

Comfy with that? I was too shy to do this up to now.

They want a copy of your Passport with the photo/personal details page and your present Visa. Also, one copy of the new 90 Day Report along with the original slip giving the existing 90 Day Due Date.

  8. I've just renewed my 90 Day Report at Chiang Mai Immigration by post for the first time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm of the understanding that you can submit the report a week either side of the Due Date. There were some difficulties and credit to them as they called me, but thankfully the slip arrived today, which is a week after the Due Date - I was on my starting blocks to drive up there; thankfully I don't have to go now.

In trying to avoid the worry as above in the future, does anyone know how long before the Due Date that Immigration are happy with - I'm thinking of sending the next one about 2 weeks before the Due Date, giving myself a 3 week window?

  9. I'm interested in people's opinions about this way of doing things for the average computer user. There will always be those who like to tinker and probably not use it, but I'm thinking of those that just use it to get email, news and general surfing etc.

    1. It seems to me that security is pretty much taken care of with it using Linux. It's my understanding that LInux also generally needs less RAM.

    2. Web apps seem to be the way to go. As with the Chrome browser, they would update automatically. I guess that some apps would be paid for, but probably on a subscription basis - not forgetting the free ones.

    3. I think that the notebooks will come with Solid State Drives and USB ports. Yes, data security does matter, but I'm more worried about backups and so would like the opportunity to have both cloud and localised backups.

The price notwithstanding, are there any other drawbacks, or indeed benefits?

  10. As DTiger said be more specific, what exactly do you need? As I understand you pay for a service that provides you a service you are py with, do you want to switch because of the ethics of the company that bought Skype? The technology in place remains the same and the routes will most likely be the same of the previous companies affiliated with Skype. Want free legal calling around the the world supported by a legit open source group to provide that, so do I. If you are willing to put forth time, effort, and money you could set one up yourself, SIP and PBX just make my head hurt with legality.

What are you exactly looking for? There are so many different things around.....

Maybe it's time to have a look here,

Basically, I'm ideally looking for Open Source phone services that I can make free calls to others that have the same software installed. I also would like the ability to make paid calls to landlines. I didn't originally mention that it was anything to do with Microsoft, but a subsequent post did mention it. I haven't been able to find an open source alternative to Skype but will look at the recommendations people have suggested. If there aren't any Open Source choices then I'm prepared to try Fring as suggested. What it comes down to is that I prefer not to use Microsoft wherever possible and also it's my feeling that Microsoft will either lag on the Linux support or wind it down, despite what Steve Ballmer of Microsoft has said; they've already dropped support for 'Asterisk'.

  11. I was led to believe that SIP provider didn't have the capability to call landlines, but I'm happy to be corrected. I will continue to use Skype to make calls to other Skype people as I can't see many of them changing. I do however want to use another program, preferably Open Source that Present day Skype users might change to. I would be happy to pay them but basically, I would prefer not to give any of my money to Microsoft.

  12. I've heard of lots of recommendations such as Linphone or Ekiga. However, from what I can tell they are just free when the Caller/Receiver use the same software.

Like many people I use Skype to make cheap landline calls to Europe, but I haven't seen any open source that will allow me to pay for calls.

  13. I'm thinking of getting one for my 5 year old boy. It's mainly to keep him quiet in the car etc. He'll use it to do games, both fun and educational and if possible put films on it.

The following are points I considered when looking at this; please don't flame me for digging my heels in about certain things eg Operating System.

    1. I like to use Open Source whenever possible and this uses Android.

    2. Price - it seems to have alot for much less than the ipad.

    3. My wife likes the TV tuner capability, but I haven't seen it in action yet.

    4. The battery life seems OK.

    5. I think that the 7 inch display is easier for kids to hold than the ipad.

I would be grateful for your thoughts.

  14. so how is it going with the shiny lappy and linux?

    Thanks for asking.

I recently changed my internet provider. I used to share a wired port modem with my wife using CAT. The service got to be really bad in the last month or so. I think it was a problem local to my city because when I changed to 3BB, after a few recommendations, the 3BB engineer has been rushed off his feet with a mass migration. I now use a wireless modem with my wife using the single wired port as she's using a desktop.

At first I couldn't get my wireless to work but I found from the Mint Forum that it was me still thinking the Windows way ie, do a search for wifi hotspots. They told me that I just needed to go into Mint Control Centre and download only the relevant driver for using Wireless. They explained that the difference being that Windows automatically installs a shed load of drivers and hence they're there without Average Joes, like me knowing it. I prefer the Linux or Mint way, which saves time during the install and the obvious disk space as well. I sent a suggestion to Clem, who runs the Mint project, that it might be an idea to put a note in the User Guide; as most people only know the Windows Mindset and it'll save them some frustrations when they install as a Newbie.

My Sparkly new notebook is working very well and seems to be alot faster. I don't know if it's the jump from 1 to 4 Gb of Memory or the new internet provider; perhaps a combination. On top of that the new internet connection is over 100 Baht cheaper - Now that's what I call the Dog's Danglies!

  15. I was too hasty in wanting to use my Ipod Touch and didn't backup itunes. It seems that I mistakenly thought that I could just sync to itunes again if the worst happened.

I've got a new notebook and installed itunes but when I sync the ipod it gives a warning message that it will in effect wipe what's already on my ipod. Is there a way that I can sync them?

  16. I've been looking for advice about what to do with my notebook battery if I mainly use my notebook at home. As per usual on the net I got conflicting advice and indeed some very technical advice. I've been told by many that basically I should remove the battery and just replace to recharge when I think I'll be out and about. I'm interested in thoughts about that. If I do just rely on my power lead I get a bit itchy about the notoriously inconsistent power supply in my area of Thailand.

With my last notebook I didn't think about the battery but it turned useless very quickly. I'm not sure if it was a dodgy battery or how I used it.

If I do rely on my power lead I'm thinking of getting a UPS, just as a fallback so that I have enough time to switch off - I'd be grateful for your thoughts.

  17. you're most welcome.

what I would really test is wireless.

just pray that it's not realtek. broadcom has some downsides too. intel and atheros should work without any issue.

broadcom recently opensourced their drivers so hope is there but you may suffer for a bit. realtek has some drivers available but they really really suck. it may work but you may have connectivity/signal strenght problems.

if you have the opportunity to fire up mint before buying, just open a terminal and issue the lspci command, look at the "Network controller" line to see what is the chipset.

I just got my shiny new machine and I'm using a CD to check out what you asked above; and here's the result of the lspci in terminal:

    03:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)

I'm using a fixed land line at home and without a wifi connection nearby - I'll try and get to a friend's house or coffee shop.

this chipset is one of those that is supported by the opensource driver. the driver is already in linus' tree but still in staging http://git.kernel.or...819008e;hb=HEAD . anyway, you shouldnt get too many troubles with it and if you do have some, then you wont have to wait too long for a stable, reliable driver. depending on your distro, it may use an older kernel in which the code wasn't merged yet but they may have added the modules independently anyway. a good way to know this is to issue the lsmod command and see which module is loaded. if you see brcm80211 then you're using the opensource driver, if you see something like wl then you are using broadcom proprietary driver which is known to be limited. anyway...

    enjoy your new machine !

I ran the terminal lsmod command and this is the result, which, with me being a newbie, means absolutely nothing.

  19. I'm extremely grateful for all the time and energy you've spent on this. I've spoken to alot of people about the general specs and it seems to be quite good. I'm trying to get and buy the machine today. I'm just going to cross my fingers that it's alright. I have MInt 10 on DVD ready and will try it as soon as I can. With me not knowing that much about specs, in terms of what you've just mentioned, is there something specific you think I should do as a test? I say that as I think that I really have been holding back buying it and just itching to go. Apart from that, I wonder how much luck I'll have if you found it frustrating.

    Many thanks, again.

  20. only two things matter:

    video card,

    wireless chipset,

    everything else should work.

/edit: holy crap, the webkitgtk bug is still there,/edit2: what's the model, we'll find out for you,/edit3: holy sh!t, this formatting bug suxb4llz

    Grateful for the help.
