What evidence is there that they are the same company? If true, why is that relevant?

Because Bangkok Dusit Medical Services owns almost EVERY private hospital (Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej, Phyathai, Paolo, BNH) in the country, except for Bumrungrad, where they only have a stake from what I know.

whether that is relevant - up for you to decide. But at least good to know....

    Thanks for your reply.

Would I just need an AIS SIM card and then send an SMS to  *777*7155*940766#?

The 940766 is not needed. It will only give that dealer who promoted the tariffs on his signboard a few satang of commission , but it may come with an assault of "promotion" sms and messages from the provider to make u for that commission they have to pay.

    dialing *777*7155#  will do

  3. According to their websites, Grab and Uber are operating in Isaan (Uber only in KK, but Grab as well in Udon and Korat plus KK).

Are there any TV members who have recent experience using them? I just read a topic about Udon Airport where you can bypass the transport Mafia, but what about downtown areas and the other two cities? How many cars usually pop up once u open the app? Is it easy to get a ride confirmed? Are cars available during evening hours too? What are the average fares? Planning an Isaan trip to exactly these three cities and curious to know if I can bypass the rip-off-Mafia nowdays

The 'Mayor' or someone like that may well be protecting the airport 'limo' and minibus services but I seriously doubt that banning the songtaew from entering is going make much of an impact on the growing number of arriving passengers bypassing the taxi touts desk and using Grab Taxi app on their smartphone. If I wanted to 'limo', it was always 200 baht despite my destination being less than 300 m outside the ring-road... and they always expect a tip!

I have used Grab Taxi a few times now, longest wait 15 minutes and home in air-conditioned comfort in 20 minutes. The charge is between 80 and 100 baht and the drivers always seem as happy as I am with the 20 baht gratuity that I offer on top.

Where do you meet the GRAB drivers? At the parking lot? Which is easy to observe by the Mafia as it is right in front of the terminal building....

As tourists, I assume they went with there high hopes and left with diddly squat after seeing the filing system !

It will not be a consolation for the Dutch lady, but that such an event is making it to the headlines, this actually shows how SAFE a City Bangkok otherwise is!

I know that several travel agencies catering to German customers in Pattaya are looking for Thai staff (maybe part-time work is possible) that can speak German. Have a look at the FARANG MAG or HALLO MAG where those companies usually advertise their jobs.

Or he could create his own cheap small-ad in those two publications

Welcome to thailand, you walk to the very busy road infront of the airport (with your luggage) and go hailing taxi's there because the ones behind the exitdoors won't use the metre....

Also i've seen the army stopping/checking taxi's at the exitlane onto Viphawadee Rd....better not do that me thinks or expect a fine/accident.

I actually cannot comment on the Taxi queue INSIDE the airport as the waiting time is usually unacceptable so I never used them.

If the army checks the exit lane ONTO Vibhavadee, this is irrelevant regarding cabs waiting OUTSIDE at Vibhavadee main road, this would only be relevant in case Cabs accept passengers from the departure level upstairs.

But you are right, the sad thing is that we actually have to discuss such topics at all....

Taxi's outside Don Mueang don't use the metre.

Of course they do. At least they did in the approx. 30 cases I landed at DMK and walked out to Vibhavadee road.

And if one doesn't - fear not, the next cab you can hail down will usually pass by within the next ten seconds

And why do you think uber drivers / cars aren't the same? Plenty of horror stories about uber drivers and cars.

where are those horror stories in Thailand or nearby countries? I have maybe 150 rides now with both Uber and Grab, and did not experience one single "horror story". Not all rides were 100% perfect and in general Uber offers better quality than Grab, but if I have the chance between a regular cab and an Uber/Grab, I would always choose the latter if available. while most of my 1.000+ rides in BKK were uneventful (it helped that I lived in the suburbs and rarely ventured into tourist areas)  I had quite a few TRUE horror stories with regular cabs where I shit my pants, with drivers almost falling asleep (even on the Tollway from the airport), fighting with other drivers, irresponsible driving style or tampered meters. Night time is a lot lot worse, as I believe at least 70-80% of the cab drivers take amphetamines (watch their body language as they don't know what to do with their extremities when under influence of Yabaa).

And don't forget in some popular areas regular cabs with honest drivers that are willing to use the meter are simply NON-EXISTENT

According to an article in the Post today, the Deputy Transport minister has reaffirmed that there will be no new ARL train order until the Eastern HSR line plans are finalised which will not be until at least mid 2018. So don't expect any decision on new rolling stock until the end of the year......sigh...

The ARL will start operating from 5.30am from Feb.

The only improvement to be seen is the fact that they now plan to convert the useless and completely unused small luggage carriage at the end of each train and fit it with seats so this carriage will be turned into a regular passenger carriage. It should increase the number each train can carry by maybe 10-15%

Call in the authorities. I've found them very effective in Pattaya in removing dogs

...which comes to no surprise as this is a nice little extra earner for the "authorities",  considering the gazillions of Chinese mainland visitors who r usually fed at remote location restaurants and just LOVE cooked canines

  12. CAN airport is clean and efficient but as generic and boring as it gets. If you have a chance, go to downtown via MRT and sip a COPA on the pleasant and green European enclave river-island called SHAMIAN (google for it, easy accessible by MRT)

In China there are a variety of plug types in use but I think US is the most common.

not quite true, the US plug is relatively rare. They usually use the German/Dutch dual-plug that is being used in Indonesia too, for example, or another 3-pin-flat-plug that I saw nowhere else.

  13. You could try DrSmartphone near ASOK BTS / Sukhumvit MRT  (walkable, bring an ID as it is inside a secured office tower), founded and run by a Dutch guy

    http://www.drsmartphone.net/en/home-2/

if they cannot upgrade the device, they will probably guide you to a reliable (but VERY difficult to find) small stall at MBK's fourth floor.

This is what happened to me just days ago. I have an old ASUS device (phablet) too and the OS was obviously dead.

They told me they cannot fix it but I should go to MBK as that guy always has plenty of OS available, which turned out to be true. It cost me 500 Baht and after spending two hours at the SIZZLER SALAD AND PASTA BUFFET (bargain this month at 139 Baht), I could collect my device and it works fine now

How can anyone in their right mind praise an illegal, uninsured service here?

nobody is forced to use them.

You are welcome to continue using a "regular" cab, with a rude ill-behaved driver on a 36-hrs-non-stop-shift, helped by tons of YABAA pills, who charges you five times the going rate in his smelly run down vehicle after finishing the ride speeding and breaking traffic laws at any occasion.

    SAWASDEE KRAB  ;-)

How much do I save with Grab vs a  regular taxi and where would I meet the Grab driver?

both Grab and Uber are SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive on trips from/to both airports than a regular cab that uses the meter properly

as I assume from your post that you r arriving at DMK, your best bet is to walk out to Vibhavadee road and hail down a cab from the Bus stop there. Usually there are several cabs waiting for pax, but I always try to hail down one that is still moving.

If a driver already stationary there and waiting outside his car asks you "where you go", smile at him and go to the next one, as such questions usually suggests he plans to take you for a ride in more than one way
