  1. Hello people,

    Whats an average ball park fee for the following services at a Notary Public in Thailand or the region;

    1) A copy of my passport page by the Notary Public with the notary stamp.

    2) Attestation of my address in Thailand.

    All for the aim so certain individuals can control certain matters in my home country.

    Thanks for any help.

  2. 1) She must apply in her country of residence or her country of nationality. If she is legally resident in Cambodia then she can apply there; although the application will be sent to Bangkok for the decision. See here.

    If she is not legally resident in Cambodia then she will need to return home an apply in Rangoon. See here.

    2) There is no minimum amount of funds required; but you must show that you can support yourselves without recourse to public funds. The finances can come from you, her, friends or family or any combination of these. Your and her employment prospects in the UK will also be taken into account. See Maintenance and accommodation.

    3) She can apply as:-

    i) Your spouse, in which case you must be married. This is valid for 27 months and after 24 months in the UK she applies for Indefinite Leave to Remain.

    ii) Your unmarried partner; but you will need to show that you have been living together outside the UK in a relationship akin to marriage for at least the last two years. Like a spouse visa it is valid for 27 months and after 24 months in the UK she applies for ILR.

    iii) Your fiance. In which case you will have to marry in the UK within 6 months and she then applies (and pays for) Further leave to Remain for a further two years after which she applies for ILR.

    See the relevant guidance in Settlement for more.

    4) Spouse, partner and fiance applicant's normally need to satisfy the English language requirement. However, from How to apply

    Long-term residents in Cambodia who are applying from Cambodia for a visa as a partner of a British Citizen or person settled in the UK are currently exempt from the English language test requirement. Due to lack of availability of UK Border Agency approved English language test providers in Cambodia you do not need to provide an English language test certificate with your application.

    5) The decision whether to use an agent or not is up to you; but I recommend that you read this first.

    Thanks alot 7by7. Sorry another dumb question.

    Will i have to go to Rangoon with her for the application?

    All the best, & thanks again.

  3. Sorry to steer people away from the OP but..

    My girlfreind & i are currently in Cambodia & are probably going to apply for the Settlement Visa shortly & i have a few questions below;

    1) She's Burmese. Is the embassy location of application important, or is there a best place to do it in the region? (eg,better to do it in BKK?)

    2) We've been travelling for the 3 years we've been together (with the same passport stamps in our PP's). She has no bank funds & has been supported by me in this time. Is it a problem if my total funds go down to below £9000 at my time of application, considering i have no job set up in the UK when i arrive? Is there a minimum amount of funds required?

    3) Do you need to be married to apply for the settlement visa? (considering we plan to stay & work in the uk)

    4) She's shy with her english speaking with other people, do you think that could be a problem even though she understands most stuff?

    5) Do you think its best to hire an agent?

    Many thanks for any help.

  4. To me its important to think what i would consider a national hero to begin with.Some people could & ,do think of Napoleon as a mass murderer,others a national hero.

    I would say that the real heroes of thailand are some of the famous monks that you see photos of everywhere & who i could not possibly name.At least theyve had a positive influence on peoples lives???

  5. If i were an honest red shirt (eg,not getting paid for my efforts-i'm hoping they exist otherwise what does it say about the soul of thailand),in a quiet moment all to myself the most important question i think i should be asking myself is what are the biggest motives for Thaksin going to political (& possibly terrorist) war with the government & millitary?

    The first question would be,''Does he actually give a **** about thailand & the poor,or is he just using us for his own means given that he is obviously a highly driven individual?''

    If i was in doubt why should i even bother considering being a red shirt,given the history of self serving politicians in the region (which the locals would be far more aware of than i.It would be imbedded in their psyche).

    Maybe the second question to myself would be ''if he cared so much about thailand,why didnt he pay his tax :) ,& what about all those property deals?'' (something that a 15 year old would grasp in a second,but maybe things get more complicated as one gets older-eg,greed,ego,self delusion,fame)

    Why has he become financial adviser to a country that is inherently corrupt (& one in which he has done business)& in the process of a major dispute over land ownership with thailand,& has a long history of feuds with thailand?(they even named a city, Siam Reap-Defeated) .Surely this alone would easily p!ss of the overly proud red shirt thai.

    The list goes on.

  6. What i think gets to most rational thinking people is that if this was actually purely a fight for democracy,then what makes the red shirts think that the current PM could possibly be any worse than Thaksin? :) Why not give him some time?A man edjucated in england.Not a rich powerful business man.He hasnt been able to do anything constructive,because the opposition has done everything possible to undermine him & score points...to regain power & suppress democracy.

    We are talking about politicians here.I think anybody who thinks that they generally get into politics for purely altruistic reasons needs to think again.In my eyes they are generally driven almost to the point of insanity,& just crave the power.

    If the red shirts win,& get what they want Thailand is going to be a mess for a very long time,divided.

    I also wonder whether these same red shirts have some warped respect for billionaire THAIS.Abit of thai nationalism thrown in.

    The current government will be in fear of the poor,& should be thinking of looking after them abit to stay in power,so why do the red shirts go further,theyve made their point?

  7. though truly the man is delusional. he makes frequent references

    comparing himself to Martin Luther King, Ghandi and Mandala

    however he sorely misses the one core component that all

    these gentlemen share....

    but to answer your original question. the milk had turned sour and had to be thrown out.

    (which was not cleaned up and now seems to be attarcting flies which are giving birth to festering maggots)

    I recently saw him hold some conference in cambodia,which he gave in english.He said it was better to be a statesman than simply a politician.He was basically calling himself a statesman.I was waiting for someone to stand up & ask 'do statesman pay their taxes',but it never happened.He also assured people that he had no interest in pursuing buisiness interests in cambodia.

  8. This was a man after all who was convicted in a court of law for unpaid taxes in the millions.Hardly democratic.You could veiw it as stealing from the poor people of issan,considering that the OFFICIAL reason that the poor people liked thaksin was that he actually did something for them rather than the usual taking care of the elite in bangkok.

    A man who was known to have ordered the assasinations of many suspected drug dealers without trial.Hardly democratic.

    Ok the thai economy was said to have grown substantionally under thaksin,but there was also the allegation that most of that growth was in his own buisnesses?

    Did he try to control the media when he was in power?About 3 months ago i was watching his propaganda tv channel (hardly democratic) where slightly guilty looking noodle sellers talk about how amazing the former leader is.

    As for the red shirts,in their fight for democracy it seems that throwing liters of diseased blood is the way to go,which quite frankly makes me feel like puking,not just the physical aspect of it,but also the thought that somebody actually come up with the idea in the first place.I can understand disgruntled farmers spraying manure over government buildings.Theres something almost wholesome about it,but throwing human blood around just seems so...undemocratic,& not to mention irresponsible given that hospitals need the blood.

    It's widely reported that the majority of the red shirts are from issan,an area known for freindly,down to earth,hard working honest farmers,but its also famous for its ladies working the bars & going wherever the money is.An area where rumours of paid for votes are rife.

    I dont for a minute believe that the actions to get rid of Thaksin were done for the good of thailand.I just think he could do what he wanted with his power/money,& the elite/military got nervous about their piece of the pie,or lack of it.

    I think i would have a huge amount of respect for the red shirts if they didnt have a multi-billionaire corrupt politician behind them (or at least it would be believable).Can you honestly imagine thousands of people travelling miles down from the north of england for a politician who was convicted of not paying tax?It would be totally bizarre.You couldnt make it up. :)

  9. Hello,ok ive installed the identifier sofware on laptop by downloading off of another computer with memory stick,& then onto laptop ,& i got the following;

    Ethernet controller (unknown device)

    Chip:broadcom bcm5705ma2 netextreme gigabit ethernet

    pnpid:ven-14e4&dev_16se&subsys_0890103c&rev_03

    Base system device (unknown device)

    Chip:02 micro 0271 mx memory cardbus accelerator.

    Is that what i needed?

    Thanks.

  10. Hello people.Continuing the riveting saga of said laptop.

    First of all thanks to everyone for taking the time to help,& jiu-jitsu,at the moment i was just taking welo's advice to check how my security was,as i figured its not going to me any harm,or rather i figured it could do my laptop alot of harm if i dont check it.

    Anyway,went back & checked,& windows firewall is on,but i'm thinking that i should switch to "dont allow exceptions"???,as i'll hopefully be using wireless.

    I have service pack 2 on xp pro 2002

    intel ® pentium ® m processor 1600mhz 221mhz,512mb

    When i search in windows it shows "virus protection not monitored",& says that i have no virus protection that windows can find,& i looked in "programs",& security & no virus protection was found.

    One thing i noticed but is probably ok is that under-Set program access & defaults-add or remove programs-choose a configuration ,i have 3 choices-"m windows","non microsoft",& "custom",& custom is used,with "use my current web browser" "enabled".

    I noticed this on the web http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service/forums...hreadId=1266812 (obviously not using my laptop) ,about driver for "base system device",which is one driver i need,& the following driver was given- O2 Micro cardbus adapter.Interested to note that somebody replied asking with the same question & problem as i,but not sure if the others were replying to his problem. :)

    Anyway i'll go with what you Both suggested,& i'll get back to you.

    Thanks again.You have restored my faith in humanity.......well partly anyway.

  11. Hello Welo & thanks for taking the time.Yes i have been hooking up a line in internet cafes via what i believe would be adsl.I'm in cambodia.

    I forgot to mention that i have windows xp pro on the laptop,& also firefox,& as i mentioned before i bought it in the uk (used).

    I'll do what you suggested before i do anything else.Is it quite straight forward to transfer the service pack 3 from cd to laptop?

    All the best.

  12. Thats great.It seems i may not be bonkers after all.Thanks to all that replied.I've been scratching my head trying to work out which driver is the ethernet controller on the hp site,but am thinking that i'm waisting my time trying to guess or look on the web.

    Just out of curiosity is there any danger if i was to transfer all those drivers onto the laptop?i'm thinking yes.

    So am i better downloading Unknown device identifier.If so,will i have to load it to cd to use on the laptop,& is it easy to use,& ok with regards to viruses etc,or can i contact hp with my laptop details to find the drivers?

    I've also been in a computer shop today (i'm in cambodia) & hes offered to sort it out if i take it tommorrow,but am thinking its doable by myself now.

    Cheers again,& appologies for any ignorance shown.

  13. Hello people,i've recently got my hands on a used laptop,a compaq nc 6000.It seems to have the windows software on it,& also firefox,but i cannot get online with it when i connect a line to it.

    i get the following in Computer Management on it;

    ?! Other devices

    -?!base system device

    -?!ethernet controller

    -?!multimedia auto controller (could be audio)

    -?!pci modem

    -?!video controller

    Then when i go to-Base system device properties,i get this;

    the drivers for this device are not installed (code 28)

    So i've just been downloading & writing onto cd all the drivers for my model off of HP's site (apart from software solutions drivers as i thought theyd take awile)

    Do you think i'm on the right track by putting all these drivers onto cd,& how easy is it to put them onto said laptop?

    Or am i completely bonkers?

    cheers for any help in advance

  14. hello people,can anybody recommend a particular make of memory stick that would enable me to download,say maybe 50 odd stock charts onto it at an internet cafe,& then veiw them on my laptop in my apartment.i'm in cambodia so the price could vary,& getting ones "head shaved" for the price can be quite common.

    I'm hoping i can do this.

    Also i''m thinking that its only possible to download one page at a time onto the stick???

    Thanks for any help.

    From Mr IT.

  15. hello,can anybody give any update on crossing into cambodia at had lek/ko kong & getting a 1 month business visa at said border.eg- what should i be paying ,what currency?

    just one photo needed?

    also can any kind soul advise on transport options to ko kong (i read the borders only 6 kms from ko kong),& then onto snookyville? (i have a very negative opinion of cambodia tuk tuk & moto drivers). :D:)

    thanks for any help.

  16. Hello,with regards to burmese people (were off to thailand again shortly from cambodia),does anybody know if the visa is free.I called into a travel agent tonight as i was curious & she said it is,but i'm wary of "no problem",& i would think that burmese have to go to the embassy?

    I'll be contacting the thai embassy,but i'm also concerned about lost in translation.

    Thanks for any help.This is what this forum is so valuable for.......rather than "should i finish with my girlfreind?

  17. "I'm not even assuming theres any experts on here with regards to stocks,but to me its more about consumer confidence in Ford,once you figure out if they can survive their heavy debt burden."

    Except for the stock price, do you have any familiarity with Ford? The company has slashed debt by 40%, avoided bankruptcy, and hasn't received any governmental funds.

    Quote uptou (Britney Spears expert)-"I'm not even assuming theres any experts on here with regards to stocks...."

    I kind of new that line would upset somebodies ego,even if it was written innocently.The whole point of the thread was to get opinions on consumer confidence in Ford due to any possible damage to reputation that would prevent people buying.You dont need to be a wall street analyst for that,just owning a Ford is good enough for me.

    But i would be interested in anything you know about the stock,that i havent already mentioned.

  18. I say a turnaround stock,but its currently trading at $7.72 with an EPS ttm of -2.072,so maybe its overvalued even now,but you get my drift. :)

    I'm not even assuming theres any experts on here with regards to stocks,but to me its more about consumer confidence in Ford,once you figure out if they can survive their heavy debt burden.

    If given a choice i dont see why i would buy a new Ford when you could buy a perfectly good Toyota as lets face it Toyota are unlikely to dissapear any time soon,& they make great reliable cars with no danger of costcutting on design or build,but i'm from the UK,& Ford is as american as apple pie,or Britney Spears...cough,cough.Would american patriotism come into play?

    I suppose a positive is that as yet Ford hasnt received any bailout money,but the stock has risen quite alot since mid feb.

    Insider buying is at 3.78%,the last was at the 30th june,which doesnt inspire confidence,but a plus if you consider in getting in early?

    I suppose the main thing for me though is that with economic downturns its the auto manufacturers that are hit the hardest,but i figure these cyclical stocks will rise the hardest at some point,but that does not mean ford will rise with them.

    I believe that in the 1st quarter Fords sales were the least to depreciate.

    So any thoughts on consumer confidence in Ford cars,or should i stick to Britney Spears?

  19. Hello,i'll be crossing the border from cambodia to thailand shortly,but seing as i dont have a totally free page in my passport,will they refuse stamping me with exit & entry stamps?I have space in previous pages,but would like to know your thoughts on this.

    I've found that in thailand its very easy to renew your passport,so i would like to do it there if possible.

    Thanks for any help.

  20. Thanks for the replys.I never had any indexes in mind,but rather the companies that make up them,eg in the s&p 500,& i'm only interested with regards to using a demo account,& specifically swing trading (very short term,usually 3 days plus).

    I've recently been looking for large cap companies with good financial health,& decent earnings (for the present conditions) & that are in clear trading ranges,as i'm wary of any trend to the upside as there doesnt seem to be any conviction,& hopefully buy or short the stock in a trading range,in the direction of the market,eg s&p 500.Its also hard to screen for stocks in trading ranges,as far as i know.But i'm not even sure looking for trading ranges is the right way to go in these conditions,i just know that you get more hits when trading,trading ranges than trends,& the profits are generally smaller.

    I'd be very interested in finding out what is the best bottom up screen for looking to BUY stocks at the present time.The book i have suggests the following screen if growth stocks are in favour,with a market cap of 250 mil plus (>= above);

    last closing share price >$5

    ave daily volume (last 50 days) >100,000

    eps growth (most recent quarter vs year ago quarter) >25%

    annualised 5 year historical eps growth rate >10%

    relative price strength rating>80

    return on equity>18%

    But obviously this suits a bull market rather than the current conditions.Obviously i know that you are not going to get many companies with 25% earnings growth at the moment,but that can be adjusted.

    i'm drawn to just looking for companies that have good balance sheets,earnings,& are likely to do well as people budget more,or,& companies that wont be effected by the crisis,& are basically in trading ranges (going sideways).It just seems to me that relative price strength doesnt really mean much at the moment as theres not enough big money getting involved to push the stocks much higher?????

    Ps.Any recomendation of a stock forum would be much appreciated.

    cheers
