  1. Popped more then a few pills in my day, and it isnt in the same league as crack heroine or coke.

I agree, but how the law classes the substance is the important thing.

I would imagine they will be given a death sentance which will be changed to life imprisonment and then if they are very lucky they will get the sentance cut to 50 years.

That is about the best an Israeli caught with a substantial amount of drugs in Thailand can hope for.

  2. Thing that prompted this thread is another thread where a member mentioned the Jap Burma railway and the suffering of the pows.

It's good to see you guy's are still allowed to us offensive derogatory ethnic slurs on this forum, just so long as it's not in reference to a race dear to any of the other members hearts.

According to Wikipedia: The term Jap is used in English as an abbreviation of the word "Japanese." Today it is usually used as an ethnic slur, though English speaking countries differ in the degree they consider the term offensive. Most people of Japanese descent in these countries consider it offensive.

    :o

Wikipedia has many racial Slur words.

Paki is a good one. When i lived in the UK it was not PC to use this word. Then i started to find Pakistani nationals describing themselves or their friends as Pakis!

    Paki = short for Pakistani

    Jap = Short for Japanese

Should the residents of Great Britain be offended when rude foreigners describe them as Brits? Or only when the term Great Brits is used? As a Brit myself, I wouldn't consider either offensive.

Either way you feel, it's not relevant to this thread as it is about war and war more often than not happens to be racist!

It's not a question of how I feel, I saw Zuki Suzuki's comments and looked it up. I'd add that there are other sources, not just Wiki. It seems to have been debated in various forums; my opinion is that it would depend on the situation in which it's used, but I'm not Japanese.

    Thank you Clayton,

Yes it is widely cosidered as offensive and a racial slure amongst Japanese people, it happens a lot on this board but it is never addressed by the moderators. If it was about others such as those of African decent then it would be.

    Double standards? Who knows.

  3. I dont see any ethnic slur - the japanese (according to a widely accepted version of historical facts) commited terrible acts or cruelty during ww2. Americans are responsible for attrocitys today - and will be judged accordingly. Ofcourse its not personal, but there are obviously some dangerous psychopaths in all societys who use the oppurtunity of conflict to act aas they wish.

Then read my post again, pay some special atention to the word i high lighted in the OP, then go and educate yourself about the ethnic slur that was used.

Jap, brit, ozzy, scott, etc. etc. You think i should educate myself

Do some research and your ignorance will become apparent to you.

Now if i had said japs eye for a certain part of my anatomy - then ok!!

A Jewish-American Princess' eye, would that be an ethnic slur?

  5. Well, I never served in the military, but my father did, as an electronic warfare officer on a B-52 during Vietnam. He died in the service (somewhat ironically in a plane crash during a re-supply mission to a base in England after coming through Vietnam without a scratch).

I've read the letters that he wrote my mother, telling her about the conflict he had dropping bombs on civilians both in Vietnam and Laos. He knew he was doing something profoundly wrong, and yet did it anyway. Which is a position I imagine a lot of people found themselves in during that war. It's something I'm glad I've never had to face.

Fast forward 30 years later, his son is traveling through the remote villages Laos, passing by UXO still left behind from bombs his father perhaps dropped. There are still villages that use the aluminum external fuel tanks the b-52's dropped as boats. And there is no animosity there, just people getting on with their lives as best they can, and are very friendly and curious about Americans. Of course, Laos does seem somewhat like a country left behind the rest of the world, and perhaps doesn't have the luxury of intense reflection when you're functioning only at the subsistence level.

In Vietnam itself, everyone I met was very friendly to the Americans, and there is sort of a perverse bond that the older men have with the USA, something like having gone through hel_l with each other even as enemies still made a strong connection. More than one Vietnamese man told me that on the scale of wars, the American war was nothing compared to the 2000 years they've been fighting the Chinese. When I mention that my father fought in the war but died while in the military, that also generated a level of understanding between cultures. Having someone close to you die in a war is something that anyone from any culture can find as a common reference point.

So from my own perspective, at least from our ill-intentioned forays into South East Asia, that there is forgiveness there, and the troubles are very much bygones from the general population. Of course, that's not saying some individuals don't feel that way, but as a whole Vietnam is looking forward to its future relationships with the USA, not dwelling on the past.

    Hi John-

Just wanted to say, Great post, thanks for the very personal thoughts and insight.

    Cheers.

Yeh, thats why i got suspended for 10 days after my coments.

  9. After my latest experience at sunrise tacos i have sent Greg the following email, i will wait for his reply.

    Hello Greg-

I would just like to tell you about my awful experience at your sunrise taco restaurant.

Myself and a friend went to Times square at around 6.30pm on Friday evening, we walked in to the square where you have a sunbeltasia office and two sunrisetaco shops. We chose to go to the larger of the stores.

We filled out the forms to order the food that we would like to eat, our order was to take away.

We waited around five minutes for a member of staff to actually come and take the forms from us and take our order. Once the member of staff had actually came and done this they then took the forms across the square to the other restaurant as it seems the one we had chosen was not actually cooking food? Very strange indeed.

We then sat and waited for our order, we sat and watched as dish after dish was brought across the square uncovered and served to waiting customers.

After about twenty minutes of waiting I decided to ask a member of staff how long my order was going to take. Mid way conversation the staff members phone rang and he answered it, he then proceeded to swear down the phone in Thai, laughing as he went and walked away, he did not return to finish our conversation.

About five minutes later another member of staff came and asked us if we would like to order, I told them that we had placed our order around twenty or so minutes ago and she asked for our name, as I was telling her this another member of staff walked in the store and distracted her, again, cursing and swearing in Thai she walked away to talk to her college and again did not return.

My friend and I then decided to cross the square and ask the staff in the other store how long our order would be. We were then asked what is your name?….

Okay this is getting very tiresome just to buy a quick bite to eat. We told them the name on the order, they said okay wait five minutes, wow so this was now over thirty minutes wait for a quick take away and they have not even started to prepare our order.

Then the Thai couple who had came and ordered well over twenty minutes after us was given there order, I asked, ‘why did these people receive there order before us when they ordered at least TWENTY MINUTES after us? The answer, whats your name? WOW this is now a joke surely. Are these people being serious? I realy started to think that there was some hidden camera and I was going to be on some candid tv show. It had to be as the whole experience was becoming to surreal.

So we got the order, almost forty minutes after originally placing it, of-course it was not as we had asked, no black beans and sour cream instead of cheese, but hey, we were not going to waste almost another hour to try and rectify the problem. I told a staff member that the Emporium branch had much better service, that was replied with “go there next time then”.

Needless to say. I will not return and I will tell every person I know who mentions your restaurant about my experience.

    Yours truly,

    A very unhappy customer.

P.S. I made the order extra large, it was advertised as being ½ a kilo in weight, I weighed it on my jewelry scales when I got back to my apartment, it was over 2oz under the supposed weight!
