  1. Have seen some great deals for hard copy magazines delivered from the UK and USA lately and am wondering if one needs to pay duty on them once they get here. The cover prices are quite high compared to the subscription cost so the duty could really add up in a year if they apply it. What's your experience on magazines delivered to Thailand from overseas?

I subscribe to Private Eye magazine (UK). In 2 years only 1 copy has failed to arrive and there has never been any duty charged.

  2. And since when are Brits not Europeans??

Britain is an Island nation, not part of Europe. They are dictated to now by Brussels, but refuse to give in. We fought against European dictatorship many years ago and will fight them again if necessary.

As for me, I live here so don't really care, but the time I have to buy Euros to visit the UK will be the last time I go.

Back on topic, I have friends from all the nations mentioned previously, even some septics, who are far less anti Brit than the idiot posting earlier.

It depends where you go, in Pattaya I would say the OP's figures are spot on, but down here in Rayong I think Antipodeans outnumber us Brits.

Britain is indeed an island nation, but of which continent is it a part if not Europe?

No mention of Russians here yet - there certainly seem to be a few around in Thailand.

  3. From the Phuket newspaper we are not allowed to quote comes a fresh follow up:

Jet-Ski Scams: Fresh Round of Talks on Friday

One thing struck me as od, as the president of the Bang Tao Jet-Ski Association, Anusorn Sale was quoted with saying that: "Insurance is not possible because under Thai law, the jet-skis are for sport only and cannot be rented to others."

So how come you can rent them then??

Anusorn Sale - how much I wonder?!!!

  4. Mekk, you don't say where you are in the UK, I hope the following info is useful:

Taste of Siam is a small supermarket (with a similarly named and reasonably good restaurant next door) at 47 Camden High Street, London NW1 7JH, Tel: 020 7383 5002.

A bigger place is Tawana Thai Supermarket at 16-18 Chepstow Road, London W2 5BD, Tel: 020 7221 6316. Website: tawana.co.uk.

Then there is the much larger Wing Yip, they mainly stock Chinese foods, but have a fair selection of Thai things including basics like fresh galangal, lemongrass and chillis but more importantly perhaps, essentials like Singha Beer! You can order online at wingyipstore.co.uk and there are stores in London, Croydon, Birmingham and Manchester; details at wingyip.com.

  5. Our son was born (naturally) in St Louis Hospital last October, the bill was just over 30,000 Baht. My wife had a single room which was big enough to also accomodate her parents and an aunt! The staff were all wonderful - from the obstetrician and paediatrician to the cleaners and everyone "in between". The facilities are all up to date and you don't feel like you are involved with a giant money making machine - I believe the hospital is run on a not-for-profit basis.

Further to Sheryl's post; I was in the delivery room for the birth, the doctors all speak reasonably good English, most of the nurses speak a little English.
